Your hobby doesn't have to fit into a standard photoshoot location. In fact, the most interesting photographs often happen where your hobby naturally takes place. I photograph hobby portraits throughout Singapore, including homes, workshops, studios, workplaces, outdoor spaces and other meaningful locations. If your hobby involves challenging lighting or a night-time setting, professional portable lighting allows me to create polished portraits without needing a conventional studio.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Understanding Hobby Photography

What Is Hobby Photography?

Hobby photography, in the way I use the term, is portrait photography that incorporates a person's hobby, interest or activity into the photoshoot. Instead of creating portraits based mainly on appearance, the photographs can show something the person genuinely enjoys doing and therefore reveal another part of who they are.

The possibilities are extremely broad because almost any hobby can become part of a portrait session. Someone who enjoys fitness, yoga or dance can be photographed performing the activity, while a musician may be photographed with an instrument. Other hobbies might involve a car, bicycle, collection, craft, sport, gaming setup or something completely different. The hobby can be the main subject of the photographs or simply provide context and personality to a more conventional portrait.

Whenever possible, I prefer to understand the hobby before deciding how to photograph it. Someone who genuinely practises an activity usually knows details that I may not, such as what equipment is important, which movements require skill or what would look obviously wrong to another enthusiast. I can contribute my knowledge of photography, lighting, composition and posing, while the person contributes their knowledge of the activity.

Different hobbies also introduce very different photographic challenges. An activity involving fast movement requires a different approach from photographing someone with a collection or musical instrument. The location may be important, specialised equipment may need to appear correctly, and some activities may have safety or practical limitations that affect where I can position myself and my photography equipment.

A hobby photoshoot doesn't necessarily have to show the person actively performing the hobby either. Sometimes the equipment, clothing or environment provides enough context, while other situations are better photographed through actual activity and movement. I decide this according to the hobby itself and what the person wants the photographs to communicate.

For me, one of the advantages of hobby photography is that it gives us something personal to build the photoshoot around. Instead of asking someone to pose without context, I can use an activity they're already familiar with as a starting point and then develop the photographic ideas around it.
