Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For maternity portraits, the lighting choice can support either a gentle lifestyle appearance or a more carefully shaped portrait.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

How Skai Began Doing Maternity Photoshoots

My journey into maternity photography began unexpectedly, driven by a passion for creating captivating portrait work. It all started when a good friend's wife recognised my talent and dedication to photography. She approached me with the idea of capturing her maternity journey and I accepted the opportunity in my busy schedule.

With a deep commitment to giving my best, I embarked on this new photographic endeavour. Together with my friend's wife, we created a series of captivating and meaningful albums that beautifully documented her pregnancy, showcasing the joy and anticipation of this special time.

However, as my maternity photography gained attractions, a challenge arose. I didn't have a permanent studio space. This limitation meant that I had to decline requests from clients who preferred a studio photoshoot instead of capturing their maternity moments outdoors or in the comfort of their own homes.

I hold the belief that renting an external studio space may not always be the best choice for clients. Many studios come equipped with CCTV surveillance, which records the entire photoshoot process. This surveillance can be invasive and may not always capture flattering moments for the client. Therefore, I tend to favour outdoor or at-home photoshoots, where we can create a more relaxed and private atmosphere, ensuring that the focus remains on celebrating the beauty and significance of the maternity journey.

The best time to schedule a maternity photoshoot is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. This is when the belly is prominently rounded, but the mom-to-be is still comfortable enough to move around and pose.
How long does a maternity photoshoot take?
A maternity photoshoot using natural light typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on the location. Be expected to spend more time for a high-end photoshoot that uses flash because the flash will be re-positioned to ensure you get the best angle for every pose and even the angle that you rotate.
What should I wear for my maternity photoshoot?
It's best to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Many moms-to-be choose to wear a flowing dress or a fitted top and a flowing skirt to show off their belly. It's also a good idea to bring a few different outfits to change into during the shoot. Some bold moms-to-be may even go for an implied nude photoshoot, which is more artistic.
What location should I choose for my maternity photoshoot?
The location of your maternity photoshoot is up to you. Some popular choices include a park, a beach or a natural setting. You can also choose to have the photoshoot in a studio or even at your home.

The time it takes to receive your photographs will vary depending on my schedule. Be sure that I won't want to drag the process because I don't want to keep a big backlog.
How will I receive my photographs?
Your photographs will typically be delivered to you digitally, via a private web link. I do not offer the option of a physical album or prints because I just want to focus on my photography for now, and not to make additional income out of photography.
Are there any additional costs beyond the photoshoot fee?
If you suddenly ask for anything beyond the package that we have agreed on, there will likely be an additional cost. Please read properly and be sure that anything that's not listed on the package means it's not included.
Can I bring my own props for the photoshoot?
Yes, that will be good. It's always best to check with me first to ensure that the props will be useful.
Will you be able to help me with posing during the photoshoot?
I will be able to help you with posing and will work with you to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed during the photoshoot. I will help you to find poses that are both flattering and comfortable for you.

However, it will be good if you can research some of the poses that you prefer. They will be a good head start for us to begin.
Can I bring my children to the photoshoot?
Yes. If you're planning to include your children in the photoshoot, do let me know earlier so that I can get prepared. I work with children often, especially during birthday parties.
Can I bring my furry friend to the photoshoot?
Yes, I'm a dognapper. However, it is also important to make sure that the location you choose for the photoshoot allows pets.
Can I have the raw images?
The raw images are the unedited images taken during the photoshoot and are not typically provided to clients. I only provide the final edited images that I have retouched.
