Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For glamour portraits, lighting can be selected according to whether you want a natural, polished or more dramatic appearance.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Understanding Glamour Photography

What Is Glamour Photography?

Glamour photography is a style of portrait photography that places particular emphasis on the person's appearance, styling and visual appeal. It can involve carefully considered wardrobe, makeup, hair, posing and lighting to create photographs that are polished and flattering, with the person themselves remaining the main focus of the image.

There isn't one required level of sensuality in glamour photography. A glamour portrait can be elegant and sophisticated, fashionable, dramatic or more sensual depending on the person and concept. The wardrobe can also vary considerably, from dresses and fashionable outfits to swimwear or more revealing clothing. What makes the photograph glamorous isn't simply how much skin is shown, but the overall presentation of the person.

Glamour photography overlaps with beauty photography, but I don't consider them exactly the same. Beauty photography generally concentrates more closely on the face, skin, makeup and hair, while glamour photography can place greater emphasis on the person's overall appearance, body, wardrobe and posing. It can also overlap with boudoir photography, although glamour photography doesn't necessarily need the intimate setting or mood commonly associated with boudoir.

Posing and lighting are particularly important because small changes can significantly affect how the face and body appear. The position of the shoulders, waist, hips, arms and legs can alter the body's shape in a photograph, while the direction and softness of the light can emphasise or reduce particular features. I therefore consider the person's physique, wardrobe and the intended style rather than applying the same glamour poses and lighting to everyone.

Post-production can contribute to the polished appearance as well, but I don't see glamour photography as an excuse to reshape someone into a completely different person. Good lighting, posing, camera angles, styling and expression should already do much of the work during the photoshoot, with appropriate editing used afterwards according to the intended result.

For me, good glamour photography is about presenting someone attractively while adapting the level of styling, polish and sensuality to the individual. Some people may want something sophisticated and relatively conservative, while others may prefer a bolder or more sensual direction. I would rather establish what the person actually wants than assume that everyone booking a glamour photoshoot is looking for the same kind of image.
