Almost any suitable location can become your photoshoot location. I provide on-location photography throughout Singapore and bring the equipment needed for the type of photography you're planning. Once you confirm your session, I'll help you assess your chosen location and advise on the most effective way to photograph there.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

How Skai Began Doing On-Location Photography

My on-location photography adventure kicked off right alongside my entry into the world of portrait photography, around the year 2012. Thanks to a seasoned photographer friend, I got the lowdown on the critical role of lighting. That enlightenment sparked a serious mission for me – mastering flash photography. I aimed to create top-notch photos anywhere, anytime.

Here's where fate dealt its hand – or hands, in this case. The lack of capital meant no traditional photography studio for me. A blessing in disguise? You bet. It pushed me towards on-location photography. I channelled whatever resources I had into upgrading my equipment and skills, tackling lighting challenges head-on for a variety of outdoor and indoor projects.

Yet, challenges kept popping up. Beyond the scenic outdoors, one of my first on-location projects unfolded in a friend's house and then a hotel room. They highlighted the struggle to achieve the low-key lighting effect that I visualised. Did I get discouraged? Nope. Instead, I used it as fuel for growth.

More equipment, more practice – that became my mantra. It led me to a point where I could expertly manipulate light to get any effect I wanted. This journey is a testament to my dedication to mastering the art of on-location photography, turning every setting into a canvas for visual storytelling.

Now, equipped with an arsenal of lighting gear, I confidently bring my on-location photography game to various settings – offices, homes, hotels, you name it. I can even set up an on-location makeshift studio at any indoor location, given sufficient space.

Understanding On-Location Photography

What Is On-Location Photography?

On-location photography refers to photography carried out at a location selected for the photoshoot rather than in my usual photography studio environment. The location can be outdoors or indoors and might include a park, beach, street, home, office, hotel, gym, café or almost any other suitable place where photography is permitted.

One of the main advantages of working on location is the variety of environments available. A location can provide attractive backgrounds, useful architecture, natural scenery or meaningful context that would be difficult to reproduce inside a studio. For some photoshoots, the location itself is an important part of the idea, while for others I may simply need to find suitable backgrounds and lighting within the area.

On-location photography doesn't necessarily mean relying only on natural light. Depending on the photography package, location and intended result, I can work with natural or available light, use a simpler flash setup, or bring professional off-camera lighting when greater control is required. The amount of equipment I use also affects how quickly and easily we can move between different shooting spots.

Compared with a photography studio, locations usually give me less control over the environment. Outdoor shoots can be affected by sunlight, weather, heat, wind and crowds, while indoor locations may have limited space, mixed lighting, fixed furniture or restrictions on photography. Public and commercial locations may also have rules regarding professional photography, tripods, lighting equipment or permits.

This means choosing a location involves more than finding somewhere that looks attractive in photographs online. I also consider the time of day, direction of light, available space, backgrounds, accessibility, privacy, crowds and whether the location is practical for the equipment and photographic approach we intend to use.

For me, good on-location photography is about making effective use of the environment rather than treating it as a decorative background. I adapt my camera positions, compositions and lighting to what is actually available, while deciding how prominently the location should feature according to the purpose of the photoshoot.

2. The photographer's expertise:

   The photographer may choose the location based on their expertise and the type of photography they specialise in. For example, a landscape photographer may choose a location that offers beautiful natural surroundings, while a portrait photographer may choose a location with good lighting and a variety of backdrops.

3. The client's preferences:

   The client may have specific preferences or requirements for the location of the photoshoot. For example, they may want the photoshoot to take place at their business, in their home or at a particular event.

Overall, the question of who chooses the location for a photoshoot can depend on a variety of factors, and it's important for the photographer and the client to communicate and come to an agreement on the location that best meets their needs and expectations.

"Is this place too dark/ dim for photoshoot?"

This is one common question I have been asked by clients and friends who are very concerned about the quality of their photographs.

The cause of this concern is mainly due to the lack of understanding of professional photography. Most people don't realise that photography isn't just about the clicking of the shutter button but it's also about solving each lighting situation.

A happy fact is that professional photographers can take good photographs at any place, given that setting up of professional lighting is allowed. It can be a dim indoor place or even outdoors at night.

Of course, photography with flash (high-end photography) is more costly due to the additional bulky, expensive and heavy equipment, and the effort to prepare, transport and assemble them.

How to Take Pictures with Location?

You see nice scenery at an outdoor location and you want to get a portrait shot with it as the background.

In some situations when you're lucky, the shot kind of works. This happens when the natural light is soft, the angle is right and you're at a good spot.

Oftentimes, it's either the background is overexposed that it appears white with most of the details lost or your face appears dark (in the shadow). In both situations, the photographs are wasted.

Most of the time, this happens when you are doing a portrait with the sky.

The solution to this problem is high-end photography, which allows the professional photographer to lower down the exposure of the entire scene and use flash to light up your face (and body). This will balance the overall exposure.

To take it to another level, a good professional photographer will try to create soft light in order to flatter you.

On-Location Photography Setup

The setup for on-location photography varies, depending on the requirement and conditions of the shooting location.

On-Location Photography Without Flash

For a casual on-location photoshoot, it's usually quick and easy with the use of natural light as the main source of light. The photographer may begin by cleaning his camera lens and attaching the accessories, such as the camera strap.

On-Location Photography With Flash

On-location photoshoots with flash (high-end photography) will take much longer time. The photographer has to set up the photography lighting equipment by fixing up the strobe, light stand and light modifier. Each set of lights may take five to 15 minutes, depending on the design of the equipment. Moreover, there will be additional testing of the settings of the camera and each set of lights.
