How Do You Want to Be Photographed?

Portrait Photographer in Singapore

There isn't one right way to photograph a person. The purpose, personality and look you want should shape how your portrait is created.

I'll plan the session around you, making thoughtful choices about the setting, lighting, composition and direction rather than applying the same formula to everyone I photograph.

Whether you need something personal, professional, casual, creative or more polished, you'll receive portraits shaped around how you want to be presented while still looking recognisably like you.

Portrait Photography Sessions in Singapore

A good portrait should feel like you, not simply look like you. It can reveal personality, confidence, character, relationships, or a side of yourself that doesn't always come through in an ordinary photograph. Portrait photography gives you the opportunity to be photographed with the care and attention that a quick snapshot simply can't provide.

I don't believe there's one correct way to make a portrait. Some people prefer something natural and understated, while others want something dramatic, elegant, creative, or distinctly editorial. I use professional lighting, thoughtful composition, and gentle direction to shape the photographs around you, while leaving room for your own expressions, ideas, and personality to come through.

Portrait photography can be as simple as updating your photographs or as personal as documenting an important chapter of your life. You may need photographs for yourself, your relationship, family, personal branding, a portfolio, social media, professional use, or simply because you've always wanted to be photographed properly. Whatever the reason, the session is tailored to your purpose, personality, and preferred style.

You also don't have to travel to a particular studio or location. I can bring professional portrait photography to your home, office, hotel, workplace, chosen venue, or outdoor location anywhere in Singapore. This makes the experience more convenient while allowing your surroundings to become part of the photographs when appropriate.

Your Goals for the Photoshoot

  • Create portraits that genuinely feel like you

Thoughtful direction, flattering lighting, and natural expressions help create photographs that feel authentic rather than forced.

  • Look your best without looking unnatural

Professional lighting and careful positioning can flatter you while still preserving your natural appearance and personality.

  • Capture genuine connection

Couples, families, and friends can be photographed through natural interactions as well as guided portraits, preserving the relationships that make the photographs meaningful.

  • Present yourself professionally

Polished portraits can strengthen your website, LinkedIn profile, social media presence, personal branding, portfolio, or other professional materials.

  • Express your personality and individuality

Your portrait doesn't have to follow a formula. The styling, setting, lighting, and direction can be shaped around who you are.

  • Create photographs for a specific purpose

Whether you need a professional headshot, personal portraits, portfolio images, family photographs, or creative work, the session can be planned around how you'll use the photographs.

  • Make use of a meaningful environment

Your home, office, workplace, favourite café, outdoor location, or another meaningful place can become part of the portrait rather than simply serving as a background.

  • Get professional photography without travelling far

I can bring my photography equipment and professional lighting to your chosen location, making the session more convenient for busy people, families, and groups.

  • Work confidently in difficult lighting

Strong sunlight, dim interiors, mixed lighting, or evening conditions don't have to prevent you from getting polished portraits. I can adapt the lighting to the environment.

  • Feel comfortable in front of the camera

Not everyone knows how to pose or what to do with their hands. I'll provide clear, calm direction so you don't have to figure everything out yourself.

Skai the Portrait Photographer

Professional portrait photographer in Singapore Hello! I'm Skai, a professional portrait photographer based in Singapore. My photography style is all about tasteful and creative shots that capture the essence of my subjects.

For over a decade, I've been helping people achieve their dream portraits using my professional lighting equipment, both natural and flash. My expertise in lighting helps me create flattering and eye-catching photos that truly stand out.

But what sets me apart from other photographers is that I value friendship as much as I value my craft. I believe that a strong connection between me and my clients leads to better photos that truly capture their personalities. That's why I take the time to get to know my clients and tailor my approach to each individual, making every session bespoke and personalised.

Whether we're shooting on-location or in-studio, I use my lighting equipment to create a natural and comfortable atmosphere for my clients. And if the occasion calls for it, I'll use my flash expertise to elevate the shots even further.

So if you're looking for a portrait photographer who can capture your essence in a tasteful and creative way, look no further than me, Skai. Let's work together and create something truly special.

Want to know what shaped the way I work today? My photography journey has taught me far more than cameras and lighting.

Skai's Portraiture Vision

"Beautify the subject and bring the best out of her"

I love portraiture photography because I love making people look good and happy, which in turn will increase their confidence. I take pride in the transformation of girls into beauties through my photography and help them to build confidence and make everyone happy, and I believe happiness is contagious.

Art is a way of life and I'm determined to deliver it tastefully. Due to my frankness and respectfulness, my models trust me, get comfortable and are eventually able to produce nice pictures together even for sensual genres such as art and boudoir.

Everyone has his or her flaws and I have the desire to hide them. With the help of a professional hair and makeup artist (HMUA) and both my photography equipment and skill, the good features of the model can be highlighted. Together with proper props, poses and expressions, everyone can be beautified.

I've been working mostly with non-professional models (as featured on my portfolio) and most of them had no experience nor confidence in a photoshoot. Portraiture photography isn't about getting the most beautiful model to work together but is about how the photographer can bring the best out of the model. Photography is also about capturing the moment to implant the desired looks and improve the visual pleasure of the viewers. Without a doubt, working with an appealing and experienced model has an edge over working with an average one. However, I do like to challenge myself, as long as the model is willing to cooperate fully.

"What shines through most is the model's personality while her looks complement it beautifully."

How Skai Began Doing Portrait Photography

When I was working in Clementi ITE, one of my colleagues sighed that she was ageing fast. It greatly affected me because she's an extremely nice and capable lady, and our team was close; most importantly, she's a hot babe who has always being portraying confidence in work. This inspired me to use photography to beautify ladies and keep memories of their beauty.

I didn't have the budget to pay for freelance models to learn portrait photography. I started approaching volunteer models both online and offline to practise, and I met with lots of arrogant rejections. Since most of the models who were willing to do portrait photoshoots with me couldn't do proper makeup, I had to spend a lot of time on PhotoShop (post-production). While I could have expedited the quality of my portrait portfolio fast with the help of professional models, I'm glad the non-models have helped me to learn more of the basics; moreover, my target audience is normal people and not professional models.

My friend, Tricia Lee, saw my enthusiasm and started guiding me along. She spent a huge amount of time and energy going through every photoshoot album with me, to spot tiny flaws and coach me accordingly to the commercial standard. The quality of my portrait work soon improved tremendously and aspiring models started approaching me instead. Then, clients came along.

Why Skai Loves Doing Portrait Photography

Portrait photography is my passion. There's something about capturing the unique beauty and personality of each of my clients that excites me every time. No two people are the same, and it's a real joy for me to showcase that through my lens.

Seeing my clients look and feel confident after a successful portrait shoot is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. I love knowing that my photography can boost their self-esteem and help them see the beauty within themselves. When people feel good about themselves, their happiness is contagious, and it spreads to those around them.

The creative process of portrait photography is what draws me in every time. From finding the perfect location to choosing the right lighting and composition, every shoot is a new and exciting challenge. Collaborating with my clients to capture their true selves in a way that's tasteful, creative, and flattering is a rewarding experience.

Preserving memorable moments in people's lives is another reason why I love portrait photography. Being a part of someone's engagement, wedding, or the birth of their child is an honour that I don't take lightly. These are moments that people will cherish for years to come, and I'm grateful to be able to help preserve them.

Singapore is a city full of unique cultural and natural beauty. As a portrait photographer based in Singapore, I'm constantly inspired by the hidden gems that are perfect for a portrait session. It's an exciting challenge to find new locations and showcase the beauty of Singapore through my photography.

In summary, my passion for portrait photography stems from the uniqueness of each person I photograph, the confidence I can help instil in them, the creativity that goes into every shoot, and the opportunity to preserve memorable moments. Being a portrait photographer in Singapore allows me to combine my passion for photography and my love for this city, resulting in a truly fulfilling profession.

How Portrait Photography has Helped Skai Grow

As a professional portrait photographer, I can say that portrait photography has been one of the most fun and fulfilling experiences of my life. Not only do I get to turn my passion into a career, but it has also helped me to grow and develop in ways that I never could have imagined.

  1. Observation:

One of the best things about portrait photography is that it's like a treasure hunt. I get to observe people's expressions, postures and demeanours and capture a glimpse of their true selves through my lens. It's like finding a hidden gem in each person and capturing it forever.

  2. Sociability:

Additionally, portrait photography has helped me to become a social butterfly. I get to meet and interact with a wide variety of people from all walks of life and it's like a never-ending party! I have developed my people skills and I've become more comfortable and confident in social situations.

  3. Artistic:

Furthermore, portrait photography has also helped me to tap into my inner artist. I have to think outside the box and be more imaginative to capture unique perspectives. It's like solving a puzzle and it's so much fun when you finally get the perfect shot.

  4. Patience:

Lastly, portrait photography has taught me the beauty of patience. Sometimes it may take a while or multiple clicks to capture the perfect shot but the result is always worth it. It's like a game of hide-and-seek, and the prize is a beautiful photo that is worth all the effort.

To conclude, portrait photography has been an exceptionally delightful and rewarding adventure for me, both professionally and personally. It has helped me to learn and develop a wide range of skills and knowledge that have been priceless in my personal life. I can't wait to take stunning, unique and memorable photos of you.

  • create meaningful and timeless images
  • celebrate important life milestones
  • preserve memories for future generations
  • provide professional-quality photographs you'll be proud to display

A strong portrait can tell a story, create a connection, and preserve a moment in time.

Portrait Photography With & Without Flash

When it comes to photography, there are two main types of lighting that photographers can use: flash and natural light. Both have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, and understanding the differences between the two can help clients make an informed decision about which type of photography is best for their needs.

The cost of photography sessions can vary depending on several factors, including the type of lighting used. Flash photography typically requires more equipment and setup time, making it more expensive than natural light photography. However, the added control and creative options that come with flash photography may be worth the extra cost for certain clients. At the end of the day, the choice between flash and natural light photography ultimately depends on the client's individual needs and preferences.

Natural Light Photography (Professional Photography)

Natural light photography, as the name suggests, relies solely on available natural light sources, such as sunlight or ambient light in a room. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of natural light photography:

    Advantages:
  • Generally less expensive, as it requires less equipment and setup time.
  • Creates a soft and flattering look that can enhance the natural beauty of subjects.
  • Can produce a more natural and authentic feel to images, capturing genuine emotions and expressions.
  • More spontaneous and flexible, as photographers can move around and change angles easily.
    Disadvantages:
  • Limited by the availability and quality of natural light sources, making it more challenging to capture consistent lighting and shadows.
  • Can result in underexposed or overexposed images if not shot correctly or in challenging lighting conditions.
  • May require more post-processing to achieve the desired look and feel.
  • More challenging to freeze motion and capture sharp images in low-light environments.

Flash Photography (High-End Photography)

Flash photography involves the use of artificial light sources, such as strobe lights or speedlites, to illuminate a scene. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of flash photography:

    Advantages:
  • Provides consistent and controllable lighting in any environment, even in low-light conditions.
  • Allows for creative control over the lighting and shadows in a scene.
  • Can freeze motion and capture sharp images even in fast-paced environments.
  • Can create dramatic and eye-catching images that stand out from natural light photography.
    Disadvantages:
  • Flash photography can be more expensive, as it requires additional equipment such as lighting stands, modifiers and triggers.
  • Can sometimes create a harsh and unflattering look, especially when used incorrectly or in combination with natural light.
  • Can be intrusive and distracting to subjects, making it difficult to capture natural expressions and emotions.
  • Will require more time and setup to achieve the desired lighting and composition.

Photoshoot Process

FAQ

Is hiring a hair and makeup artist necessary?
Yes, a professional makeup artist and hairstylist can make a significant difference in the result. Specialisation is crucial and not everyone can be an all-rounder. If hairstyling and makeup were simple, there wouldn't be high-priced courses, and anyone could easily provide the services.
Do you provide outfits?
No. I cover various photography genres, and I don't have the space to store outfits for every genre and people of different body types. You should wear your own clothes for the utmost comfort. I'll use my knowledge to select outfits that suit you and the theme, and I may suggest a new outfit if needed.
Do I have to show you my clothes?
Yes, if you provide your own outfit, we need to go through them together for better results. This is necessary to:

Allow me (and the HMUA) to choose the most suitable outfit for the theme.
Avoid fashion disasters.
Prevent choosing the wrong outfit due to miscommunication.
Ensure the outfit still exists and is wearable.
Allow me (and the HMUA) to plan our jobs (colours, style, etc.).
What would help you plan better for our shoot?
Tell me more about yourself so that I can understand your requirements better.
Why does a high-end portrait photoshoot require a lot of time?
It takes time to set up and dismantle professional equipment. Throughout the shoot, we need to do a lot of testing of the light. Individuals need time to get warmed up for good expressions, and the first half-hour is usually for that purpose.
I'm not good-looking. Can I turn pretty in a photoshoot?
With proper styling, lighting, angles, expression and trust, you can look much better. While I won't promise the sky, talking to me and exploring together will help.
Can I do a photoshoot if I can't pose as well as the models featured on your website?
Yes, you can! My clients are non-models. The results on my website prove that everyone can model.
Do you provide the venue for the shoot?
No, we can shoot anywhere legal and free for the public. For venues requiring booking or entry fees, you're responsible for the expense.
Do you own a photography studio?
Please refer to my studio photography page for the latest updates.
Can you touch me physically to guide me during the shoot?
No, I'll guide you verbally or demonstrate when necessary. Physical guidance can be suggestive and may cause misunderstandings.
Can I bring a friend or my boyfriend along for my solo shoot?
I don't focus well when the model's boyfriend is around. Bring a female friend if it's an outdoor shoot, but she shouldn't act as a bodyguard to guard against me; because it's an insult to me.
Who else will be around during the shoot?
It depends on the scale and type of the shoot. The HMUA and/or assistant may be present. For any sensual shoot, the team will be females.
What kind of Photoshop editing do you do?
Basic enhancement (exposure, colour tone correction, and cropping when necessary) for all photographs. Advanced enhancement, like skin retouching, costs much higher. All editing is done to commercial standards.
Where can I find out more about your portrait photography?
Most of the genres that I cover have their individual pages. Navigate to the respective pages to see my work and find out more.
Does skin colour affect people photography?
Yes, skin colour can affect people photography, but it's something photographers can manage with the right techniques. Different skin tones reflect light differently, so it's important to adjust lighting and camera settings to ensure everyone looks their best. However, if you put two people with very different skin tones in a photo, it will be more challenging than usual.
