Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. The lighting choice can support anything from a restrained portrait to a more dramatic visual concept.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

My journey into art photography began when I discovered artistic images on social media that deeply moved me. Early on, aspiring models approached me for glamour and boudoir shoots, which introduced me to the art genre. Given Singapore's conservative environment, I set up makeshift studios to ensure privacy and professionalism. At first, working with models who revealed more skin felt unfamiliar, but I quickly realised my priority was to create meaningful artwork.

Over time, I experimented with styles and techniques, learning that art photography requires careful planning, creativity, and professionalism to distinguish itself from mere glamour. I grew to love the process - from conceptualisation to final photos - and the trust clients placed in me during intimate shoots. What Is Art Photography?

Art photography uses photography as a creative medium rather than simply documenting how someone looks. In the context of my portrait work, it means creating photographs around an artistic idea, mood, visual style or way of presenting the human form. It can overlap with conceptual photography, although an artistic portrait doesn't necessarily need to communicate a complicated concept or story.

There isn't one particular look that defines art photography. A portrait can be minimalist, dramatic, elegant, unusual, abstract or experimental. The artistic element may come from the lighting, posing, composition, location, wardrobe, colours or post-production, or from the way several of these elements are combined. Sometimes the human body itself can also become an important part of the composition, particularly when art photography overlaps with genres such as bodyscape or implied nude photography.

One of the challenges of art photography is turning an idea into something that actually works visually. An interesting concept alone doesn't automatically produce an interesting photograph. I still have to consider how the lighting shapes the subject, whether the pose supports the composition, how the background contributes to the image and whether all the different elements work together rather than compete for attention.

For me, art photography also gives me more freedom to experiment beyond conventional portrait photography. Instead of always trying to create the safest or most familiar-looking portrait, I can explore unusual lighting, compositions, poses and ideas when they suit the person and the concept. The objective isn't necessarily to make every photograph look unconventional, but to use photography creatively to produce something with a stronger visual identity.

We may refine poses, expressions, framing, lighting and the use of props as the idea develops in front of the camera. I will provide direction, but there should also be room to respond to unexpected visual possibilities rather than follow a rigid checklist.
What if an idea does not work as expected during the shoot?
I will adapt it where practical by changing the composition, lighting, pose, prop or setting. Creative experimentation does not guarantee that every variation will succeed, so the priority is recognising what works and developing the strongest direction.

How long does an art photoshoot take?
I recommend the duration according to the complexity of the concept, number of looks, location, lighting and physical setup. I may complete a simple idea in much less time than a production involving elaborate styling, props or several visual treatments.
How many final photographs will I receive?
The number and editing level depend on the package you choose. For art photography, a smaller collection of carefully developed and retouched photographs may sometimes serve the concept better than a large group of similar images.
