Where We Can Shoot

Profile photography should reflect how you want to be seen. My profile photography sessions are available anywhere in Singapore, from controlled studio portraits to relaxed environmental photographs. Professional lighting allows me to work in a wide range of environments, including locations with challenging or limited light. Once your booking is confirmed, I'll recommend suitable locations based on the purpose of your photographs, your preferred style and your comfort.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

When choosing a package for profile photography, the most suitable option depends on the session duration, number of people, number of final photographs, location, lighting requirements, level of editing and whether the photographs are for personal or commercial use.

Studio or venue hire, location permits, travel, special props or styling, additional lighting or manpower, advanced retouching, urgent delivery and other optional services may involve additional charges where relevant. I will discuss any relevant requirements and costs with you before the session is confirmed.

It all started with taking random photos for friends using a simple point-and-shoot camera. Before I knew it, my friends began using those photos for their profile pictures.

As I ventured into serious portrait photography, I worked with friends and aspiring models on various themed shoots, and they, too, used my photos for their profiles. That's when I realised photos can serve multiple purposes and I embraced the idea.

When I started freelancing as a photographer, clients approached me for various photography genres, often wanting to use the photos for their profiles. Of course, there were also clients who sought me out specifically for profile photos.

What Is Profile Photography?

Profile photography refers to photographs created primarily for use as a person's profile image or as part of their profile on an online platform. This can include professional websites, LinkedIn, company directories, social media, dating apps and other places where photographs help introduce or represent the person.

There isn't one particular style that makes something a profile photograph. It can be a traditional headshot, a half-body or full-body portrait, an environmental photograph or a more relaxed lifestyle image. The appropriate approach depends mainly on where the photograph will be used and what the person wants it to communicate.

A professional profile, social media account and dating profile can require very different photographs. Someone using an image for LinkedIn may want a relatively straightforward professional portrait, while a creative professional may benefit from something less conventional. A dating profile usually benefits from greater variety because potential matches may want to see more than a single close-up photograph.

This is why profile photography and headshot photography aren't exactly the same. A headshot describes a type of portrait that concentrates primarily on the face and upper body, while profile photography describes the intended use of the photograph. A headshot can certainly be used as a profile photograph, but a profile photograph doesn't necessarily have to be a headshot.

The intended platform also affects practical decisions such as composition and cropping. Profile photographs are often displayed quite small and may be automatically cropped into square or circular formats, so important facial features need to remain clear within the usable area. When photographs are intended for several platforms, I can create or frame images with different uses in mind rather than assuming that one composition will work equally well everywhere.

For me, good profile photography starts with understanding where the photographs will appear and what purpose the profile serves. Instead of applying the same idea of looking "professional" or "approachable" to everyone, I consider the audience, platform and individual before deciding on the location, wardrobe, expression, composition and photographic style.
