A Visual World Built Around One Theme

Themed Photographer in Singapore

I build the photograph around the chosen theme, bringing wardrobe, props, setting, pose and light into the same visual direction rather than placing a costume inside an otherwise ordinary portrait.

Themed Photography Sessions in Singapore

A themed session starts with a defined visual idea: a character, era, colour palette, fictional world, fashion direction or concept of your own. We first decide what the photographs need to communicate and which elements are essential, so effort and budget are not spread across details that will contribute little on camera.

I consider how wardrobe, props, location, set, makeup, pose and lighting should work together. A convincing result does not require every element to be elaborate, but the visible choices should belong to the same world and the person should remain more than someone simply wearing a costume.

The session can range from a subtle reference to a fully developed character portrait. Preparation depends on the ambition of the concept, access to suitable locations and props, and whether we need time to build or adjust anything before photographing it.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

Skai Chan holding a camera for a lightweight photography setup
Natural or available lightA lighter camera setup that allows greater freedom to move around the location.

Off-camera flashA planned lighting setup using a separate light and modifier.
  • Natural or available light:

Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

For a practical comparison, read my guide to flash and natural-light photography.

The stunning images you see here feature everyday individuals, not professional models. If they can shine in front of the camera, so can you!

How Skai Began Doing Themed Photography

Once upon a time, my journey into the world of themed photography began with a humble passion for fashion photography. However, as time went on, I found myself longing for more excitement and a deeper level of creative exploration. The repetitive nature of fashion photography only seemed to attract aspiring models who sought the same genre of images, leaving me yearning for something fresh and invigorating.

Determined to break free from the confines of the familiar, I embarked on a quest to infuse my shoots with a newfound sense of intrigue and enchantment. I seized every opportunity to brainstorm and conceptualise innovative ideas, always with the enthusiastic consent of the models who approached me. Together, we embarked on a collaborative adventure, where imagination knew no bounds and creative boundaries were meant to be shattered.

In those early days, I recall some of the first themes I explored were inspired by the model's own collectables. We transformed their cherished items into whimsical props, weaving stories that brought a sense of personal nostalgia and joy to the photographs. Additionally, I sought to add an extra dimension to our shoots by borrowing musical instruments like guitars and ukuleles or even utilising my own furry companion, my beloved dog, as a charming and unexpected muse.

These unconventional elements injected an extraordinary essence into each shot, elevating the visual storytelling to new heights. By incorporating personal touches and unexpected props, we created a tapestry of imagery that resonated deeply with both the models and those who beheld the final results.

As I continued to push the boundaries of creativity, something magical happened. Clients who sought to celebrate their individuality and desired photography that transcended the ordinary started gravitating towards my work. It was an incredibly gratifying experience to witness their admiration and appreciation for the art we created together. These incredible individuals recognised the power of themed photography to transform their stories into visual masterpieces, capturing their essence in ways that felt truly authentic and extraordinary.

Today, I stand before you, having evolved from a fashion photographer yearning for more to a creator of immersive visual narratives that ignite the imagination. With each new client, I am reminded of the profound impact that themed photography can have on capturing the essence of their unique stories and aspirations.

I am humbled by the trust bestowed upon me by those who seek to step into a world of imagination, where dreams become tangible and memories are immortalised in breathtaking imagery. It is an honour to collaborate with kindred spirits, breathe life into their ideas and witness their joy as they witness their visions come to life.

Why Skai Loves Doing Themed Photography

Themed photography has a unique way of bringing like-minded individuals together, fostering a wonderful chemistry between my clients and me. It is truly a delight to collaborate with individuals who share a passion for creativity, storytelling and the desire to embark on a visual journey that goes beyond the ordinary.

The beauty of themed photography lies not only in the remarkable images we create but also in the connections we forge along the way. The shared enthusiasm and aligned mindsets between my clients and me enhance the creative process, enabling us to explore and experiment with ideas that resonate deeply with their personalities and aspirations.

Moreover, themed photography adds an extra layer of intrigue and allure to my work. The incorporation of unique themes, striking props and imaginative concepts elevate the visual impact of the photographs, making them more captivating and eye-catching. This added allure attracts attention and exposes my work to a wider audience, allowing more people to discover and appreciate my distinct photography style.

The magic of themed photography lies in its ability to create a visual narrative that not only speaks to the individual but also resonates with others who appreciate artistry, storytelling and creativity. By infusing my work with diverse themes, I strive to create images that evoke emotions, spark curiosity and leave a lasting impression on those who encounter them.

Understanding Themed Photography

What Is Themed Photography?

Themed photography is photography built around a recognisable theme that influences how the photoshoot is planned and photographed. The theme can come from an era, culture, fictional world, visual style, activity, occasion, character or almost any other source of inspiration. It gives the photographs a common direction rather than treating each image as an unrelated portrait.

A theme can be simple or elaborate. Sometimes an appropriate outfit and location are enough to establish the idea, while more ambitious themes may involve multiple outfits, makeup and hairstyling, props, specially selected locations, set decoration and more elaborate lighting. How much preparation is worthwhile depends on the idea, budget, available time and how important each element is to the finished photographs.

Themed photography is closely related to conceptual photography, but I don't consider them exactly the same. A theme provides a recognisable visual direction, while a concept usually provides an underlying idea, message or meaning. For example, someone may simply want a vintage-themed photoshoot because they enjoy the clothing and aesthetics of a particular period; the photographs don't necessarily need to communicate a deeper concept.

One of the main challenges is making the different elements work together. The wardrobe may look appropriate on its own, but the location, background, makeup, props and lighting can either strengthen or weaken the theme. I therefore consider which elements are essential to making the idea recognisable and which ones would merely add unnecessary complexity.

Practical limitations are important as well. A theme that looks simple in a reference photograph may depend on a specialised location, costume, prop, set or lighting arrangement that isn't readily available. Some ideas may also require permission to photograph at a particular venue. When necessary, I look at what can realistically be created with the available resources rather than trying to reproduce a reference image exactly.

The photography itself doesn't always have to look heavily staged. Depending on the theme, I can use formal poses, natural interaction, movement, dramatic lighting or a relatively simple portrait approach. The theme provides the overall direction, but it doesn't dictate one particular photographic style.

For me, good themed photography is about identifying the elements that make an idea visually recognisable and concentrating our effort on those that contribute most to the photographs. A convincing theme doesn't necessarily require a huge production; sometimes a strong combination of wardrobe, location, lighting and photography is enough to establish the intended visual world.
