How to Make a Photoshoot Unique?

Many non-professional photographers think photography is only clicking on the camera's shutter button. They don't see the effort behind every photograph that has made the photo different from the rest.

I have a respectable client who appreciates me a lot. However, to her, all professional photographers would produce good-quality photographs of a certain level. She approached me after going through my website and hired me because of my personality.

My photography experience tells a different story. Throughout my entire portrait photography journey, I have been trying to work on creative and bold concepts. Creating all these spectacular works helps to keep my love and passion for photography going. I also see the beauty of personalising pictures that relate to the models' lifestyles to create more meaningful photographs for them.

My effort in planning and executing photoshoot concepts for many individuals is hectic, but they make my bespoke photography different from other photographers' photoshoot packages.

Ideas: Ideas don't simply appear at the snap of a finger. It takes experience, inspiration and creativity to come out with good ideas. It usually takes time to do research.

High-end photography: Setting up for the specific kind of lighting is very tedious as compared to setting up a standard light. If the photographer were to adjust the lighting for different poses, the effort would be even greater.

Below are some elements of photography that I would customise and personalise for my bespoke portraits:

  1. Ideas/concepts:

The photography idea sets the tone for the photoshoot and can make or break the overall look and feel of the images. Consider the mood you want to convey and explore different concepts to find what works best for your particular shoot.

  2. Location:

The location of the photoshoot is a crucial element in creating a unique and memorable experience. Take the time to research different locations that have not been used before and consider factors like lighting, backdrop, and accessibility when making your selection.

  3. Date/day and time:

When planning a photoshoot, consider the day of the week and time of day, as they can have a significant impact on the final result. For example, some locations may look better during the week or on weekends, while others may look better in the morning or evening.

  4. Outfits:

The outfits worn by the models during a photoshoot can greatly affect the final result. Consider the colours, patterns and materials of the outfits and make sure they complement the location and overall mood of the shoot.

  5. Props:

Props can be used to add interest and creativity to a photoshoot. From hats and glasses to furniture and flowers, the right props can help to bring a concept to life and make the images stand out.

  6. Hairstyle:

The hairstyle of the models can greatly impact the final look of the images. A well-chosen hairstyle can shape the face, highlight features and create a certain mood.

  7. Makeup:

Makeup can enhance the features of the models, hide flaws and bring out the intended mood. A professional makeup artist can make all the difference in creating a unique and memorable photoshoot.

  8. Posture:

The posture of the models can greatly affect the final images. A good photographer will guide the models to pose in a way that is natural, comfortable and flattering.

  9. Expression:

The expression on the face of the models can greatly impact the mood and emotion of the images. An experienced photographer will help the models to create the right expression to convey the intended mood.

  10. Quality of light:

The quality of light used in a photoshoot can greatly impact the final result. Soft light is often used to produce more flattering images, while harsh light can create a more dramatic effect.

  11. Quantity of light:

The quantity of light used in a photoshoot can also have a significant impact on the final result. The number of lights used, both natural and artificial can create a different mood or effect.

  12. Direction of light:

The direction of the light can greatly impact the mood of the images. A good photographer will consider the direction of the light and how it affects the shadows and highlights in the images.

  13. Lens:

The lens and focal length used by the photographer can greatly affect the final result. Different lenses can create different moods, perspectives and depth of field, so it's important to choose the right lens for each particular shoot.

  14. Composition:

The composition of the images, including the framing, placement of subjects and use of negative space, can greatly impact the final result. A good photographer will consider the composition of the images and how it affects the mood and overall impact of the photoshoot.

  15. Angle of lens:

The angle at which the photographer captures the picture can greatly impact the mood and overall appearance of the shot. Experimenting with different angles, such as shooting from high above or low to the ground, can result in unique and eye-catching compositions.

  16. Edit and post-processing:

After the photoshoot, the images can be further enhanced through editing and post-processing techniques. These techniques can be used to add more depth and interest to the images, making the photoshoot truly one-of-a-kind.

By incorporating these elements, a bespoke photoshoot can be made truly unique and memorable. It takes a combination of creativity, planning and technical skills to bring a photoshoot to life and capture the essence of the subject beautifully and timelessly.

Understanding Bespoke Photography

What is Bespoke Photography

The term "bespoke" originates from the word "bespoken", meaning to speak for something. In photography, it refers to the photographer crafting images that meet your specific needs and vision.

Bespoke photography is all about creating something personal—custom photo sessions designed around each client's unique tastes and preferences. Unlike standard photography, which often follows a set formula, bespoke photography is highly flexible. Every part of the process, from the initial concept to the final shot, is adapted to fit exactly what the client envisions. A bespoke photographer can even help clients refine their ideas to ensure the photoshoot truly reflects what they want.

There's a lot that can be tailored, from themes, outfits and styling, to locations, backgrounds, props and poses. The goal is to make sure the session reflects the client's individuality.

Whether it's for a corporate event, a wedding or a personal portrait, bespoke photography focuses on capturing the client's unique style and personality. This level of personalisation not only produces stunning and meaningful images but also creates a memorable experience, setting it apart from more formulaic photography sessions.

Bespoke photography is also known as personalised photography, custom photography or tailored photography. Whatever the name, the idea remains the same—it's about ensuring that the session is uniquely designed for the client and their specific needs.

What is Bespoke Photographer?

A bespoke photographer or bespoke portrait photographer, is someone who offers customised photography sessions to his clients. He specialises in capturing portraits that are tailored to the individual needs and preferences of each client.

These photographers are known for their ability to create unique and personalised photographs that truly reflect the personality and character of their subjects. With their attention to detail and creative vision, bespoke photographers in Singapore create portraits that are not only visually stunning, but also emotionally evocative and truly memorable.

What are the Challenges of Doing Bespoke Photoshoots in Singapore?

Without a doubt, there are also challenges in doing bespoke photoshoots in Singapore, including:

  1. Finding the right location:

Singapore is a densely populated city; thus, finding the right place for a bespoke photoshoot can be challenging. Clients can overcome this challenge by working closely with the photographer to find a location that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional while ensuring that the place is available and accessible for the photoshoot.

  2. Dealing with the weather:

Singapore is known for its hot and humid climate, which can be challenging for outdoor photoshoots. Clients can overcome this challenge by being prepared for inclement weather and having contingency plans in place in case of rain or other weather-related issues. They can also consider scheduling the photoshoot when the weather is more favourable.

  3. Working within budget constraints:

Bespoke photoshoots in Singapore can be expensive and clients may have budget constraints that the photographer needs to work within. Clients can overcome this challenge by having a clear understanding of their budget and communicating their needs and expectations clearly to the photographer.

  4. Managing expectations:

Bespoke photoshoots are highly personalised, which also implies that clients have specific expectations for the final product. Clients can overcome this challenge by having clear and open communication with the photographer and providing them with a clear vision for the final product.

  5. Balancing creativity and practicality:

Bespoke photoshoots require striking a balance between creativity and practicality. Clients can overcome this challenge by working closely with the photographer and providing them with clear guidelines and expectations, while also allowing them the freedom to use their creativity and come up with unique solutions.

In conclusion, while bespoke photoshoots in Singapore can be a unique and rewarding experience, they also come with their own set of challenges. By working closely with the photographer and having clear communication and expectations, clients can overcome these challenges and create beautiful, one-of-a-kind images that they will cherish for years to come.

Why Do People Do Bespoke Photography?

Who would want to do bespoke photography? Why would bespoke photography produce better photographs as compared to the usual photography?

Bespoke photography is for people who wish to create special sets of photographs that can be differentiated from the daily millions of photographs being taken worldwide. The clients would receive photographs that are unique, eye-catchy and/ or meaningful to them. Instead of simply counting on luck, the photographer can do proper planning to increase the chance of getting good photographs.

People choose bespoke photography for a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Personalised photography package:

Photography can be very complicated. Many clients tend to underestimate the amount of time required for some photoshoots. Unfortunately, a big portion of a photoshoot is actually the logistic part, which is often neglected. A bespoke photographer will always try to find out more details from his clients and advise them in order to help them make the best decision on the selection of the photography packages based on both the need and budget.

  2. Personalised concept:

Unlike traditional photography, bespoke photography offers a highly personalised experience that is tailored to the individual needs, preferences and vision of the client. This allows clients to create images that truly reflect their unique style and tastes. From the location to the poses and lighting, every aspect of the photoshoot is tailored to the client's specifications. There's no single lighting set-up that can help to create all kinds of moods, not even in a controlled environment like a photography studio. Thus, the bespoke photographer may be changing the exposure, position and angle of his lighting every now and then, even if it's a studio photoshoot.

That's no one photography idea that can fit everyone; a photography concept may suit a client but not another person and vice versa. What everyone truly needs is a photographer who works to identify and achieve what suits her best or serves her interest the most. The photographer will try to find out the kind of mood/ impression the client wants to give the viewers. For example, a sweet or sexy feel for a personal female portrait, or a serious or trendy feel for a corporate portrait.

  3. Special and eye-catching:

Why choose to be normal when you can be special? It's boring to do the same things as most other people, resulting in getting images that won't be noticed by others. The photographs can be eye-catchy and stand out from the rest. They can be trophies that truly represent a client, the one and only her in this world. Remember that there can be people who resemble a client in looks but there won't be anyone who has both her looks and personality. Everyone is unique and her photographs can display her uniqueness.

  4. High-quality results:

Bespoke photography typically results in high-quality images that are unique and one-of-a-kind. These images are often of higher quality than those produced by traditional photographers, as they are created specifically for the client. Lighting is the most important element of photography as it helps to bring out the mood and draw viewers' attention to any part of the photograph as intended. A bespoke photographer must be able to customise the lighting to fit each mood. He can keep the background dark, I can highlight a certain part of the photograph and he can customises the lighting to give the client the most flattering light possible. A professional bespoke photographer has the skill and equipment to create lighting to achieve these.

  5. Unforeseeable challenges:

There are many unforeseeable situations that could happen to destroy the supposedly perfect shooting plan. The most common culprit would be the weather. For example, when planning for a golden hour photoshoot in the early morning, a sudden downpour could stall the time and drag it till the sun was out in full force. Another common problem is having the direct sun shining at the client even on a cloudy day. When an unfortunate problem arises, it takes an experienced professional photographer who can customise the lighting to deal the problem to create the best photographs possible.

Apart from having to find a better spot or angle at the location, the use of powerful (heavy and bulky though) professional lighting can help to battle the harsh sunlight.

Under every circumstance, I will try to keep the dynamic range of the photographs as high as possible to keep the photographs looking good.

  6. Memories:

Bespoke photography is a great way to create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it's a family portrait, wedding or special event, bespoke photography allows clients to preserve important memories and moments.

  7. Artistic expression:

For many clients, bespoke photography is a chance for artistic expression. It allows them to present themselves creatively and produce astonishing images that are unique and personal to them.

In conclusion, people choose bespoke photography for a variety of reasons, including personalisation, customisation, high-quality results, memories and artistic expression. Whether it's a family portrait, a special event or a personal project, bespoke photography allows people to create unique and high-quality images that are tailored specifically to their needs and vision.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you're looking for a special and unique way to document your memories and personality, you should seek for bespoke portrait photography. The personalisation ensures that your photos are tailored to your preferences and needs, resulting in stunning and high-quality images that truly capture your essence.

Unlike traditional portrait photography, which often feels generic and lacks personality, bespoke portrait photography is meaningful and personalised, giving you the opportunity to tell your story through images. Whether you're looking for a professional headshot, a family portrait or a creative photo shoot that reflects your personality, bespoke portrait photography can deliver exactly what you need.

So, if you're ready to create something truly special and meaningful, consider taking up bespoke portrait photography in Singapore. With a wide range of talented and professional photographers to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect match for your needs and style.
