I can work with the available space and lighting, and use professional lighting where needed to create flattering, polished photographs.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Understanding Office Photography

What Is Office Photography?

Office photography, in the context of my people photography services, refers to photographing individuals and groups within their actual workplace. Instead of bringing everyone to a photography studio, I can work at the client's office and use either the workplace itself or a suitable area within it to create professional photographs.

An office photoshoot can include individual headshots, team photographs, environmental portraits and photographs of employees working or interacting within the workplace. Depending on what the company needs, I can create a consistent series of relatively formal portraits or incorporate the actual office environment to provide more context about the people, business and working environment.

Office photography therefore overlaps with Corporate Photography and Corporate Headshot Photography, but they aren't exactly the same. Corporate photography describes photography created for a company or organisation and can take place almost anywhere, while office photography specifically uses the workplace as the location. A corporate headshot can likewise be photographed at an office, studio or another suitable location.

Every office presents different photographic possibilities and limitations. A spacious modern workplace with large windows and uncluttered backgrounds gives me more options than a small office filled with desks, equipment and employees. Meeting rooms can sometimes provide useful private spaces for portraits, while reception areas, workstations and other recognisable parts of the office may be more suitable for environmental photographs.

Lighting also varies considerably between workplaces. Some offices have useful daylight, while others rely heavily on ceiling lights that may not be particularly flattering for portraits. Depending on the requirements and photography package, I can work with the available light or bring professional lighting. More elaborate lighting setups require additional working space and setup time, so the available area is an important consideration when planning the session.

Photographing at the office can be particularly practical when several employees need to be photographed because they don't all have to travel to a studio. However, this also requires organisation. Deciding where the photography will take place, preparing the area and arranging when each person or team will be photographed can reduce disruption to normal business operations and allow me to work more efficiently.

For me, office photography isn't simply about placing someone in front of a desk so that the photograph looks corporate. I consider how much of the workplace should be visible, whether it contributes useful context, and whether the client needs formal portraits, environmental photographs, working images or a combination of them.
