Show the Work You've Put In

Fitness Photographer in Singapore

Building your physique takes time, discipline and consistency. Your photographs should showcase that work while still paying attention to the person behind it.

I'll use professional lighting, flattering angles and thoughtful direction to highlight your physique, form and definition while keeping your expression and overall presentation equally considered.

You'll receive powerful, polished portraits that document your progress and celebrate what you've worked to achieve.

Fitness Photography Sessions in Singapore

A fitness photoshoot is about more than showing your physique. It is a chance to document the discipline, consistency, and effort behind your fitness journey - whether you're proud of how far you've come, preparing for a competition, building your professional image, or simply want photographs that remind you of what you achieved.

I work with both fitness enthusiasts and professionals. You don't need to be a bodybuilder, athlete, or fitness model to have a worthwhile fitness photoshoot. Whether you're documenting a personal transformation, creating content as a trainer, or building imagery for a fitness brand, I'll tailor the session around what you want the photographs to communicate.

Lighting makes a significant difference in fitness photography. Carefully controlled light can reveal muscle definition, shape, symmetry, and texture while keeping your face and expression visible and natural. I use professional lighting, thoughtful composition, and practical direction to create photographs that are striking without making you look overly posed or artificial.

Your session can be as simple or creative as you like. We can focus on physique portraits, incorporate movement and training, create lifestyle imagery, or explore more artistic approaches such as bodyscape photography. The aim is to create photographs that reflect your effort, personality, and goals rather than forcing you into a standard fitness template.

Whether you're celebrating your own progress or need professional imagery for your fitness career or business, you'll receive photographs that showcase both the person and the work behind the physique.

From dramatic lighting and bodyscapes to creative concepts and movement studies, your session can be as artistic or expressive as you wish.

  • Preserve a version of yourself you'll never have again

Your body, strength, and fitness level will continue to evolve over time. A fitness photoshoot allows you to remember and celebrate this particular chapter of your life.

Fitness photography is about more than muscles and aesthetics. It's about documenting commitment, celebrating achievement, building confidence, and creating meaningful photographs that reflect the work you've put into becoming the person you are today. To refine your ideas before we plan the details, read my guide to defining your photoshoot goals and consider which photographs, purpose, and experience matter most to you.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For fitness photography, the lighting choice affects how clearly the photographs show physique definition, shape and movement.

Skai Chan holding a camera for a lightweight photography setup
Natural or available lightA lighter camera setup that allows greater freedom to move around the location.
Skai Chan beside a softbox used for off-camera flash photography
Off-camera flashA planned lighting setup using a separate light and modifier.
  • Natural or available light:

Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

For a practical comparison, read my guide to flash and natural-light photography.

The stunning images you see here feature everyday individuals, not professional models. If they can shine in front of the camera, so can you!

Why Choose Skai for Fitness Photography

Fitness photography depends on more than a strong pose. Light, angles, expression, timing and clear direction must work together to show your physique while still creating a flattering portrait of you as a person. My approach is practical, personalised and suited to both first-timers and experienced fitness professionals.

  • Lighting That Shapes the Physique:

I use natural light, ambient light or professional off-camera lighting according to the location and intended look, controlling highlights and shadows to reveal shape, definition and form.

  • Your Face Matters Too:

A strong physique photograph should not come at the expense of an unflattering face. My experience in beauty portrait photography helps me balance muscle definition with flattering facial light, expression and overall presentation.

  • Guidance Without Physical Contact:

You do not need modelling experience. I will guide you verbally through body positioning, angles, expressions and small adjustments throughout the session while respecting your personal space.

  • On-Location Lighting Experience:

I am comfortable working beyond conventional studios. Gyms, homes, beaches, parks and dim indoor environments can all become effective fitness photography locations when lighting and composition are handled carefully.

  • Personalised Rather Than Formulaic:

Different physiques, personalities and goals require different approaches. Your bespoke session will be planned around what you want to showcase and how you want to be seen, rather than forcing you through a fixed list of standard poses.

  • Honest Representation:

My aim is to showcase what you have genuinely achieved through thoughtful lighting, posing and photography rather than digitally creating a physique that is not yours.

Clients' Testimonials

fitness photoshoot session "This was my first photoshoot of any kind, and after some initial enquiries to a few photographers I had a good feel about Skai. He was very open and informative during our discussions on what I was looking to do, and we bounced a few ideas between us.

For the shoot itself, Skai was highly accommodating and patient. It was not rushed at any point, and I felt at ease and relaxed from the moment we met up. I enjoyed myself throughout, and it felt like I was chatting to a friend.

I was delighted with the final set of photos I received. Skai worked on the pics and returned to me very quickly. Some of the direction I received on different poses during the shoot, they came out much better than I had in my mind at the time. I thank Skai so much for such an excellent experience for my maiden shoot." - Liu Wing Lun

fitness photography session "Contacted Skai a week before our event as there was a change in event date. He was really accommodating. We booked for 2 hours of his time, and because he had such a great attitude, we hired him for an additional 2 more hours. Pictures turned out great! Totally would recommend." - Oliver C. Dominic, BFT Changi

Skai the Fitness Photographer

Professional fitness photographer in Singapore Hello! I'm Skai, a fitness photographer in Singapore with an unconventional journey into fitness and photography.

I did not come from a wealthy family, so while other children bought snacks during recess, I spent my time at the school's fitness corner doing pull-ups and trying anything that required little equipment or money. Free sports such as volleyball became my go-to activities. Without really planning it, I stayed active and maintained a good physique without becoming a fan of gyms.

Years later, one of my best friends started a gym business chain. I began spending time there - although, as I still joke, I was often there for the food and drinks rather than the workouts. Watching the discipline of the people around me gave me a deeper appreciation of fitness as a personal journey, not simply an appearance.

Before I owned a DSLR, that same connection led me to arrange a promotional gym photoshoot with Vanessa Poh. I was a photography novice using automatic mode and relying mainly on my eye for composition. The photographs were respectable, helped greatly by Vanessa's elegance, but I could also see their limitations: dim light and movement made sharp images difficult, and shooting in JPG restricted what I could improve later.

Those early shortcomings pushed me to learn. I progressed from outdoor fitness portraits to gym sessions, studio photography and professional off-camera lighting. Fitness photography eventually became one of the many genres through which I could combine technical problem-solving with a genuine interest in people's stories.

I enjoy photographing the strength, movement and dedication behind each person's progress. Every session presents a different creative challenge: the controlled grace of a dancer, the raw power of a weightlifter, a trainer building a professional brand or an everyday person marking a hard-earned milestone.

The people I meet also influence me. Clients and trainers who appear intimidating at first are often among the kindest and most encouraging people I work with. Seeing their progress reminds me to remain active myself - even if lifting my camera bag is sometimes the closest I get to their training routine.

My interest in health extends beyond photography. In Tengah, I have quietly nurtured a private health and wellness group where residents jog, hike and walk together, including slower walks with elderly neighbours. That experience reinforces what I value in fitness photography: health is not only about performance or a particular body type, but also presence, confidence, community and the decision to keep moving.

I want the photographs we create to preserve your effort honestly and give you something meaningful to look back on as your body, goals and life continue to change.

Want to know what shaped the way I work today? My photography journey has taught me far more than cameras and lighting.

  • Common Approaches:

Studio portraits, gym sessions, outdoor fitness photography, training and action coverage, lifestyle portraits, professional lighting setups and polished imagery for personal or commercial use.

Photoshoot Process

FAQ

Is This Session Right For You?

I'm not very fit. Can I still do a fitness photoshoot?
Yes. You don't need to be a bodybuilder or fitness influencer to do a fitness photoshoot. Many people book a session to celebrate progress, document a milestone, or motivate themselves to continue pursuing a healthier lifestyle.
I'm overweight. Can I still do a fitness photoshoot?
Absolutely. Fitness photography isn't only for people with extremely low body-fat percentages. Whether you're starting your fitness journey, documenting your transformation, or celebrating a personal achievement, professional photographs can be meaningful at every stage.
I'm not comfortable showing too much skin. Can I still do a fitness photoshoot?
Of course. While revealing more skin can help showcase muscle definition, it's not mandatory. The photoshoot should reflect your comfort level, personality and goals.
Do I need visible abs or a muscular physique before booking a fitness photoshoot?
No. Fitness photography isn't only about six-packs and large muscles. Strength, determination, athleticism and personal achievement can all be celebrated through photography.

Planning Your Photoshoot

Can we do a fitness photoshoot in a gym?
Yes. However, please ensure that permission has been obtained from the gym owner or management beforehand.
Can you provide a gym for the photoshoot?
Yes. Additional charges may apply and availability will depend on the venue owner's schedule and approval.
Should I work out before the photoshoot?
Yes. A short workout immediately before or during the shoot can help increase muscle definition and create a stronger physique appearance. Avoid exhausting yourself too early, as you'll still need energy throughout the session.
Should I reduce my water intake before the photoshoot?
I don't recommend compromising your hydration or health for a photoshoot. If you're following a specialised competition or physique-preparation programme, follow appropriate professional guidance rather than changing your hydration solely for photography.
Should I get a tan before the photoshoot?
It depends on your goals. A tan can sometimes increase the appearance of muscle definition, but it isn't necessary. Natural skin tones photograph well too.
Should I wear a shirt for the photoshoot?
It depends on the type of fitness photographs you're looking for. For physique-focused photographs, showing more skin generally helps showcase muscle definition. For lifestyle fitness shoots, sportswear may be more appropriate.
Do you provide outfits for the photoshoot?
No. You should prepare your own outfits. If possible, send me photographs of the outfits beforehand so that we can discuss whether they are suitable for your goals.
Can I change outfits during the photoshoot?
Usually, yes. The practical number of outfit changes depends on your package, location, available changing facilities and the time needed for lighting or location changes.
Can I bring fitness equipment or props?
Yes. Relevant equipment can make the photographs more personal and help show your training style. Please tell me what you plan to bring so that we can consider safety, transport, venue rules and how it will be used.
Can my trainer or partner join the session?
Usually, yes, provided the venue permits it. They may help with motivation, safety or exercise technique, although anyone who will also be photographed should be discussed beforehand.
When is the best time for an outdoor fitness photoshoot?
Early morning or late afternoon often provides softer light and more comfortable temperatures. The best timing also depends on the location, crowd levels, weather and the look you want to achieve.

During The Photoshoot

Why is lighting so important in fitness photography?
Fitness photography is largely about showing shape, definition and muscle separation. Proper lighting can dramatically improve how a physique appears without relying heavily on editing.
How should I pose for fitness pictures?
I'll provide guidance throughout the session. Before the shoot, it helps to research poses that suit your physique and goals. We can begin with those and gradually explore more natural and personalised variations.
Can you guide me if I've never done a fitness photoshoot before?
Yes. Most clients aren't professional fitness models. I'll guide you on posing, expressions, body positioning and how to showcase your physique effectively.
Do I need to know how to flex my muscles?
Not necessarily. However, having some awareness of how to engage different muscle groups can help create stronger photographs. I'll provide guidance during the session.
Can we create both physique-focused and lifestyle fitness photographs during the same shoot?
Usually, yes. This depends on the package, available time, location and your overall goals for the session.
Can you photograph me while I'm actually training?
Yes. We can create documentary-style training photographs as well as directed portraits. The balance depends on your goals, the exercises involved, the venue and the time available.
Can you photograph me in a dark gym?
Yes, in many cases. I can use professional off-camera lighting where the venue allows it. Permission, available space, reflective surfaces and the time required for setup will affect the approach.
Can we photograph several different exercises?
Usually, yes. It helps to prioritise the exercises that matter most because equipment changes, lighting adjustments and repeated sets all use session time.

Packages & Booking

Can you add a six-pack to my body?
No. Creating realistic muscles digitally is extremely difficult and often produces unnatural results. I'd rather help you showcase your real achievements honestly.
Can you remove stretch marks, scars, rashes or make me look slimmer?
In many cases, yes. This falls under advanced editing services. The extent of editing depends on the photograph and whether the result can still look natural.
Can you make my muscles look bigger through editing?
Minor adjustments may be possible through posing, lighting, timing and editing. However, I don't believe in creating unrealistic physiques that misrepresent a person's actual appearance.
