Beauty photography concentrates on the face, makeup, hair, skin and smaller visual details that may receive less attention in a wider portrait. It can be natural and understated, clean and commercial, or more dramatic and editorial depending on whether the photographs are for you, a portfolio, a makeup artist or a beauty brand.

I use controlled lighting, camera angle and precise direction to bring forward the features and details we want to show before post-production begins. Retouching can refine the final image, but it cannot replace suitable preparation, skilled makeup or light that was chosen carefully at the shoot.

We plan the intended crop, styling, background, expressions and level of finish around where the photographs will be used. For commercial work, I also need to understand which makeup details, products or techniques must remain accurate and visible.

Where We Can Shoot

Beauty photography doesn't require a traditional studio. The right environment depends on the look you're trying to achieve, and professional lighting gives me the flexibility to create flattering and controlled photographs in a wide range of locations. I'll help you choose a suitable setting based on your concept, styling, privacy requirements, and the intended use of the photographs.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

When choosing a package for beauty portrait photography, the most suitable option depends on the session duration, number of people, number of final photographs, location, lighting requirements, level of editing and whether the photographs are for personal or commercial use.

Studio or venue hire, location permits, travel, special props or styling, additional lighting or manpower, advanced retouching, urgent delivery and other optional services may involve additional charges where relevant. What Is Beauty Photography?

Beauty photography is a form of portrait photography that places particular emphasis on the face, skin, makeup, hair and other fine details of a person's appearance. The framing is often closer than in a conventional portrait, allowing features, makeup and styling to become important parts of the photograph rather than simply supporting elements.

Beauty photography can overlap with glamour photography, but I don't consider them exactly the same. Glamour photography can place greater emphasis on the person's overall appearance, styling, body and sensuality, while beauty photography tends to concentrate more closely on facial features, makeup, skin and hair. It can also overlap with makeover photography when makeup and styling are an important part of the transformation.

Because beauty photographs often show the face in considerable detail, small things become much more noticeable. The direction and softness of the light can affect how skin texture and facial features appear, while makeup that looks suitable in person may photograph differently under certain lighting. Camera angle, expression, hair placement and even small changes in the position of the face can also make a significant difference.

For me, good beauty photography isn't about removing every line, pore and individual characteristic until everyone looks the same. I use lighting, posing, camera angles and appropriate post-production to create flattering photographs while still considering how the person actually looks. Depending on the purpose of the shoot, the result can be natural and understated or more polished and stylised.
