Group portraits should showcase unity and personality. My sessions are available anywhere in Singapore-from offices and studios to parks and beaches. Once your shoot is confirmed, I'll recommend the best locations to achieve strong, cohesive results.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For group portraits, the lighting choice also depends on the group size, arrangement and space available at the location.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

When choosing a package for group photography, the most suitable option depends on the session duration, number of people, number of final photographs, location, lighting requirements, level of editing and whether the photographs are for personal or commercial use.

Studio or venue hire, location permits, travel, special props or styling, additional lighting or manpower, advanced retouching, urgent delivery and other optional services may involve additional charges where relevant. One of my personal regrets is not having more family photos taken while my dad was alive-a reminder of how precious group portraits can be. Like many photographers, my journey began with photographing friends and family, often in groups. Understanding Group Photography

What Is Group Photography?

Group photography involves photographing multiple people together within the same portrait or series of portraits. The group can consist of family members, friends, colleagues, classmates, members of an organisation or almost any collection of people who need to be photographed together.

The approach depends considerably on the size and purpose of the group. A small group gives me more freedom to vary poses, positions and interactions between individuals, while a large group usually requires a more structured arrangement so that everyone can be seen clearly. Depending on the session, I may also photograph smaller combinations and individual portraits in addition to the main group photograph.

Group photography becomes progressively more challenging as more people are added. I have to consider where each person stands or sits, differences in height, whether anyone is being blocked, how balanced the overall arrangement looks and whether everyone is positioned within a suitable focusing range. Getting a good expression from several people at exactly the same moment can also be surprisingly difficult because one blink or distraction may affect an otherwise successful photograph.

Lighting a group can require a different approach from lighting one person as well. The light needs to cover everyone appropriately rather than looking good on one person while leaving someone else poorly illuminated. Larger groups may also require more physical space between the camera, subjects and lighting equipment, so the size and layout of the location can affect what is realistically possible.

Group photography overlaps with family photography, friends photography and team photography, but those services are defined more by the relationship or purpose of the people being photographed. Group photography is the broader category and concentrates on the practical and photographic challenge of creating a successful portrait involving multiple people.

For me, a good group photograph isn't simply one where everyone manages to fit inside the frame. I want each person to be visible and presented appropriately while making the entire group look balanced as a single composition. The larger the group becomes, the more important clear direction and efficient organisation become, because a small adjustment to one person can affect everyone around them.
