Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. At the beach, added light can help balance a person against bright sand, water or sky, while suitable daylight can keep the session more mobile.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Skai's Journey as a Beach Photographer

My journey into beach photography began with my very first beach - a bikini shoot. At that time, I was still new to photography and relied solely on natural light to capture the moment. That experience ignited a passion within me for photographing individuals in the enchanting beach setting.

What drew me to beach photography was the accessibility of these scenic locations. Beaches are often freely open to the public, providing stunning backdrops without limitations. This allowed me to experiment, hone my skills, and appreciate the diverse opportunities the coastal environment presented. Over time, I discovered that beach photography was not limited to bikinis - it became a canvas for fitness, weddings, lifestyle, vacation, and more.

As I ventured into different genres, I realised that the most rewarding images often came when people were part of the frame. Capturing vehicles, fitness poses, or lifestyle moments alongside their owners or loved ones added depth and narrative that pure landscapes could not. Each shoot became a chance to tell compelling stories and celebrate authentic connections. What Is Beach Photography?

Beach photography is a form of outdoor photography that uses the beach, sea and surrounding coastal environment as part of the photographs. Depending on the type of photoshoot, the beach can provide a relaxed lifestyle setting or become a dramatic backdrop for portraits, couples, families, bikini, fitness, fashion and other photography concepts.

One reason I like beaches as photoshoot locations is the variety they can offer within the same area. Besides the sea and shoreline, I may be able to work with sand, rocks, greenery, pathways, structures and other surroundings. The appearance of the location can also change considerably according to the weather and time of day, especially around sunrise and sunset.

However, beach photography can be more challenging than the relaxed photographs might suggest. Beaches are exposed environments with limited shelter, so I have to work with changing weather, strong sunlight, wind, heat and humidity. Crowds and distracting objects in the background can restrict my shooting angles, while sand and seawater require additional care when I'm working with cameras and lighting equipment.

Lighting is particularly important at the beach because there may be very little shade. Depending on the conditions and the photographs we want to create, I may work with natural light or use professional lighting to gain greater control over how the person is illuminated against the surroundings. This is also why the timing of a beach photoshoot can make a significant difference to both the lighting and the overall appearance of the photographs.

For me, choosing a beach isn't simply about finding a place with sand and water. I consider the direction of the light, available backgrounds, expected crowds, accessibility and the type of photographs we're trying to create. A beautiful beach can still be unsuitable for a particular photoshoot if the practical conditions work against the concept.
