Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

How Skai Began Doing Women's Fashion Photoshoots

It all began when I first picked up a camera and started taking portraits. To be honest, I was quite clueless back then and didn't know where to begin. But, as they say, practice makes perfect. So, I started exploring different genres of photography and fashion photography caught my eye.

I wanted to focus on women's fashion photography because I appreciated the way women looked and found them to be more interesting subjects. Plus, let's be real, uploading pictures of beautiful women online was bound to catch more attention.

However, starting wasn't easy. I wasn't born with a silver spoon and could only collaborate with friends. I turned to my offline female friends and some of them were willing to help me out. At the same time, I also approached some female net friends to model for me, but unfortunately, not everyone was interested. It was tough facing rejection, but I didn't let that discourage me.

As I continued practising and taking more pictures, I knew I needed guidance to improve my skills. That's when a professional commercial makeup artist friend of mine saw my enthusiasm and started mentoring me. Her guidance was invaluable and helped me grow tremendously as a photographer.

Looking back, I'm grateful for all the rejection and challenges I faced along the way. It only fueled my passion and pushed me to improve. Today, I specialise in women's fashion photography and I absolutely love what I do.

At first, I was nervous to approach women and ask them to model for me, but I persevered and slowly built up a network of models who believed in my vision. It's not always easy to put yourself out there as a man interested in fashion and beauty, but doing so has enriched my life in countless ways.

In fashion photography, the clothing and styling become important photographic subjects themselves, so I also consider how clearly the garments, shapes, textures and other styling details are being presented.

The position of the body can change the silhouette of a garment, create or remove folds, hide important details and affect how fabric falls or moves. Depending on the clothing, I may use relatively controlled poses to present its shape clearly or introduce movement when the fabric, design and intended style benefit from it.

A studio can provide greater control over the background and lighting, while an outdoor or other on-location environment can contribute architecture, colour, texture or context. The most suitable choice depends on the clothing and the kind of photographs we want to create.

For me, good women's fashion photography isn't about forcing every woman into the same ideas of femininity, elegance or glamour. Different clothing can call for very different presentations - sophisticated, casual, sporty, powerful, soft, unconventional, glamorous or understated. I look at the actual fashion, the person wearing it and the intended purpose of the photographs before deciding how to pose, light and photograph the shoot.
