Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

The truth is, I never set out to become a hotel photographer. It just happened naturally. When I started realising that professional photography required more equipment, I began accepting commercial work to fund my gear. Many of those jobs were event coverage projects, and most of them happened inside hotels. Over time, it became a space where my love for interiors, storytelling, and people all came together.

Understanding Hotel Photography

What Is Hotel Photography?

Hotel photography, in the context of my portrait photography services, refers to a photoshoot carried out in a hotel room, suite or other suitable area of a hotel. The hotel serves as the location for the portrait session rather than being the subject of the photography itself. This is different from commercial hospitality photography, where a photographer is hired by a hotel to photograph its rooms, facilities, food or services for marketing purposes.

A hotel can provide an interesting alternative to a photography studio or home. Depending on the property and room, it may offer attractive interior design, large windows, different furniture and several usable backgrounds within a relatively private environment. Hotel rooms can therefore work for many portrait styles, including personal portraits, couple photography, fashion, glamour, boudoir and other concepts where an indoor setting suits the intended photographs.

However, the photographic possibilities depend heavily on the particular hotel and room selected. A large suite with good windows and uncluttered interiors gives me considerably more flexibility than a small room filled with furniture. The position of the bed, walls, mirrors, windows and fixed furniture can affect camera angles and composition, while the amount of floor space determines whether larger lighting equipment can be positioned effectively.

Lighting conditions can vary greatly as well. Some hotel rooms receive useful natural light during particular times of the day, while others can be relatively dark even during daytime. Depending on the photoshoot and package, I can work with the available light or bring professional lighting to create and control the light myself. For a more elaborate setup, sufficient space for the lights, modifiers and camera position becomes particularly important.

There are also practical considerations beyond photography. Hotels have their own rules regarding visitors, photography, equipment and the use of rooms or common areas, so clients should make sure that the intended photoshoot is permitted by the property. Photographing in hotel lobbies, corridors, swimming pools or other shared spaces may be subject to different restrictions from photographing inside a privately booked room.

For me, choosing a hotel shouldn't simply be about finding an expensive or luxurious-looking room. What matters more is whether the space, interior, available light and practical restrictions suit the photographs we want to create. If possible, seeing photographs of the actual room beforehand helps me assess its potential and plan how I can use the space during the photoshoot.
