Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For conceptual photography, lighting forms part of the visual idea and should be planned together with the location, styling and intended mood.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Skai's Journey as a Conceptual Photographer

My journey into conceptual photography began when I realised that conventional fashion shoots felt repetitive and uninspiring. Encouraged by a commercial makeup artist friend, I started exploring glamour and themed shoots, discovering that storytelling and unique concepts were what truly excited me. Suggesting creative ideas to models became a turning point, as I saw how concepts could transform a simple portrait into a powerful narrative.

A pivotal collaboration with a Japanese makeup artist introduced me to bold, imaginative ideas that sparked a new direction in my work. From then on, I leaned fully into conceptualised shoots, embracing creativity as the heart of my photography. Today, conceptual photography remains my favourite genre - a passion that allows me to express myself, connect with other artists, and transform fleeting inspiration into meaningful, lasting art.

Understanding Conceptual Photography

What Is Conceptual Photography?

Conceptual photography is photography built around an idea, message, story or theme that I want the finished photographs to communicate. Instead of beginning primarily with the question of how to make a photograph look beautiful, dramatic or unusual, the process usually begins with what we're trying to express and then works backwards to determine how that idea can be represented visually.

The concept can be simple or complex. It might represent a personal experience, emotion, character, fantasy, social idea or completely fictional story. I can then use elements such as the location, wardrobe, props, lighting, colours, posing and expression to support that concept. Not every element needs to have a symbolic meaning, but the different choices should ideally contribute to the overall idea rather than being included simply because they look interesting.

Conceptual photography overlaps with art photography, but I don't consider them exactly the same. An artistic photograph can be created mainly because I find the lighting, composition, human form or visual treatment interesting, without necessarily communicating a particular message. With conceptual photography, the underlying idea usually plays a more important role in determining how the photograph is created.

It can also overlap with themed photography. A theme provides a recognisable visual direction, such as a particular era, character or fantasy world, whereas a concept usually goes further by giving those visual elements a reason for being there. A photoshoot can certainly be both themed and conceptual, depending on what we're trying to create.

One of the main challenges is translating an idea that exists in someone's mind into something that actually works as a photograph. Some ideas may be difficult to communicate visually, while others may require locations, props, wardrobe, lighting or post-production that aren't practical within the available time and budget. Part of the creative process is therefore deciding which elements are essential and finding a realistic way to communicate the idea through the camera.

For me, good conceptual photography isn't about making a photograph complicated just so that it appears creative. A simple photograph can communicate a strong concept if the visual choices support the idea clearly. What matters is that the concept gives us a meaningful direction for deciding what should be included, how it should be photographed and what we want the viewer to take away from the image.

We start with a consultation to understand your vision and preferences. Then, we collaborate on the concept, plan logistics, conduct the shoot and conclude with post-processing for the final delivery.
Are location and props provided, or do I need to arrange them separately?
Clients will provide the locations and props. If I own any props, I will chip in.
What is the expected duration of the photoshoot?
The duration varies based on the complexity of the concept. Generally, it can range from a few hours to a full day.
Do you provide wardrobe and styling assistance for the shoot?
I don't provide wardrobe. However, basic wardrobe guidance is provided.
Can I contribute ideas for the concept, or do you come up with them entirely?
Absolutely, collaboration is encouraged! I value your input and we can work together to bring your ideas to life.
How many edited photos can I expect to receive, and what is the turnaround time?
The number of edited photos depends on the package. Turnaround time varies depending on my schedule. Note that I don't rush through my work to ensure high-quality results.
Is there an additional cost for image licensing or usage rights?
Standard licensing for personal use is usually included. For commercial purposes, additional licensing fees may apply.
What happens in case of bad weather or unforeseen circumstances on the scheduled shoot day?
We discuss contingency plans during the pre-shoot consultation. Rescheduling or adapting the concept to suit unexpected conditions is always considered.
Do you offer retouching services, and is it included in the package?
Please read the packages properly for the services.
Can I request specific post-processing styles for the images?
Absolutely, your preferences are considered. We can discuss and incorporate specific post-processing styles. However, every photographer has their own style and may reserve the right to turn down certain requests.
Are there any additional fees not mentioned in the package for things like travel or location permits?
There's no additional travel fee unless stated during the consultation. For location permits, it's between the location management and the client.
Can I order prints or albums of the final images through you?
No, I support green life. I don't offer print and album services to focus fully on photography as well.
Is there a payment plan available, or is full payment required upfront?
A deposit is required to book my services. The remaining amount is paid on the actual day of the shoot.
What rights do I have to the images after the photoshoot?
You usually receive personal use rights. For commercial purposes, licensing terms will be specified.
Can family members or pets be included in the photoshoot, and is there an extra charge for this?
Family members and pets can be included. Any potential additional charges will be discussed upfront.
