A studio gives me deliberate control over the light, background and visible surroundings of a portrait. This is useful when the photograph needs a clean presentation, a repeatable treatment or a more constructed visual direction without depending on weather and changing outdoor light.

I do not treat studio photography as one standard lighting formula. The position of the face and body, clothing, movement, background and intended mood can each change how the light should be placed. I adjust the setup where necessary and provide clear direction so these elements work together within the frame.

The session may cover headshots, full-body portraits, fashion, personal branding, modelling photographs or a creative concept. Depending on the required space, background and equipment, we can work from my private portrait studio, a suitable rental studio or a studio-style setup at another location where practical.

For my lighting setup, I believe there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Every theme, subject, pose, angle and outfit requires its own unique lighting setup to truly shine. That's why I always take the time to carefully adjust my studio lighting to best suit the scenario at hand. Whether it's dramatic and moody, soft and romantic, or something in between, I'm dedicated to making sure that the lighting perfectly complements the subject and the vision for the shoot. It's all about creating that perfect atmosphere and bringing out the best in every shot.

How Skai Began Doing Studio Photography

I still remember the day when I first decided to explore portrait photography. I was eager to try it out in different places as I knew that I had to be versatile as a photographer to achieve my goals.

I arranged to collaborate with an aspiring model and makeup artist. But, the challenge was that I needed to find a place to set up my studio. Luckily, my relatives offered to lend me their living room. I was ecstatic and immediately started planning.

On the day of the shoot, I carried all my equipment over, which was quite far from my house. It was an energy-draining task but I knew it was worth it. However, to my dismay, the model was over an hour late. Fortunately, the results were better than I had expected. From then on, I didn't give up grabbing every opportunity to set up a makeshift studio for my shoots.

That first shoot was just the beginning and I continue to strive to improve and create unique and captivating studio work.

Understanding Studio Photography

What Is Studio Photography?

Studio photography refers to photography carried out in a space specifically set up or used for photography, where I have greater control over the environment than at most outdoor or on-location settings. A studio can provide suitable shooting space, controlled backgrounds and room for lighting equipment, allowing many photographic decisions to be made independently of the weather or changing outdoor conditions.

Studio photography doesn't describe one particular visual style. I can create simple headshots, personal portraits, corporate photographs, beauty and glamour images, fashion photographs, family portraits and many other types of photography in a studio. The final appearance depends on the background, lighting, wardrobe, posing and intended purpose rather than simply on the fact that the photographs were taken indoors.

One of the main advantages of working in a studio is control over lighting. Instead of depending heavily on the direction and intensity of existing light, I can position and adjust professional lighting according to the photographs I want to create. Different lighting arrangements can produce soft and flattering portraits, stronger facial or body definition, clean commercial photographs or more dramatic effects.

A studio can also provide simpler and more consistent backgrounds, which can be useful when the person needs to remain the clear focus of the photograph. Depending on the studio and requirements, backgrounds can range from plain walls and seamless backdrops to furnished sets or other purpose-built environments. A studio therefore doesn't necessarily mean photographing everyone against the same plain background.

However, studio photography isn't automatically easier than photographing elsewhere. The amount of working space affects the camera positions, focal lengths, group sizes and lighting setups I can use. Larger lighting modifiers and full-body photographs generally require more room, while photographing several people together can quickly become difficult in a small studio.

Studio photography also differs from indoor photography more generally. A home, hotel, office or restaurant is an indoor location, but it isn't necessarily designed around the needs of photography. In a studio, photography is the primary purpose of the space, while at other indoor locations I usually have to adapt my equipment and compositions around the existing environment.

For me, the main benefit of studio photography is therefore control rather than simply having access to professional equipment. When the background, lighting and shooting area can be managed more deliberately, I can concentrate on creating the intended photographs without having to respond constantly to changing weather, sunlight, crowds or other environmental conditions.
