A cat session can concentrate on individual portraits, the relationship between you and your cat, or several cats within the same household. I ask about temperament, routines, preferred spaces and sensitivities beforehand because those details affect where and how we should work.

I do not expect a cat to hold conventional poses or respond repeatedly on command. Instead, I prepare the light and background, observe its behaviour and work within its attention span, allowing pauses or a change of approach when the cat needs one.

Familiar surroundings are often useful, although the appropriate location depends on the cat and the visual result you want. Toys, treats and familiar people can help attract attention, but the session remains guided by the animal's welfare rather than by a rigid shot list.

Where We Can Shoot

Most cats are happiest in familiar surroundings, so I generally recommend photographing them where they feel comfortable. I can work in homes and suitable indoor locations, and my professional lighting equipment allows me to create well-lit, detailed photographs even when the available light isn't ideal. Once your session is confirmed, I'll help you decide on the most suitable location based on your cat and the type of photographs you want.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. Available light often gives pets more freedom to move naturally, while planned lighting may suit calmer, controlled portraits.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Hello! I'm Skai-a cat photographer based in Singapore. My work is soul-centred, and honestly, if it weren't for cats, I might've fallen apart in 2023. They didn't just cheer me up-they helped me heal.

Back then, I was living in a shared space that felt more draining than comforting. I was tired all the time-carrying stress quietly, dealing with tense situations, and dragging heavy gear across the island for shoots. I was running on empty.

Then the cats came into my life.

The stray and pet cats I met near the blocks became unexpected companions. Each encounter offered a moment of calm, helping me manage stress and stay grounded. Their quiet presence reminded me to breathe, slow down, and find balance in everyday life.

I've always had a special connection with animals-especially cats. My years working with dogs were helpful, but working with cats is something deeper. My wife calls it "magic fingers"-gentle massage techniques that allow even nervous animals to relax and feel safe enough for a photo.

In my new Tengah neighbourhood, I started a Telegram group for community cats. It's a quiet network that connects feeders, fosterers, and adopters. Together, we care for the strays, support each other, and help prevent uncontrolled breeding-so every cat has a chance to live safely and be loved.

So here I am-not just a photographer of people, but also a portrait artist for cats. I capture their charm, their softness, and their spirit. My goal is to turn everyday moments into lasting art that honours who they are.

My vision in cat photography is to create stunning, heartfelt images that celebrate the unique essence of every feline. Cats, as beloved companions, deserve to have their memories preserved in the most beautiful way possible. These portraits become treasured keepsakes, especially since cats often live shorter lives than humans. Beyond aesthetics, I aim to foster deeper understanding of cats - both pets and strays - by highlighting their personalities and quirks. Skai's Journey as a Cat Photographer

My journey into cat photography began with a lifelong love for animals. Growing up in a family that cared for strays, I often played with local cats and captured casual shots on my phone. While my main focus was human portraits, opportunities during gatherings and home visits allowed me to photograph cats, slowly building a portfolio of feline moments.

When I moved into my own home in 2024, I began interacting with stray cats in my estate, though challenges prevented me from executing full professional shoots. This frustration motivated me to focus on attracting clients who wanted portraits of their beloved cats. Over time, cat photography became a rewarding extension of my work - teaching me patience, offering new creative challenges, and enriching my portfolio with variety. Today, it remains a source of joy, connection, and artistic growth, allowing me to share the beauty and calming presence of cats with the world.

Skai's Regrets

When I was living in the Taman Jurong estate, I always had this idea to roam around and capture the local cats in their natural environment-just for keepsakes. It was one of those plans that felt like it could wait, especially with my busy schedule. But life moves fast. I moved out and now finding the time to head back feels like a distant dream. It's strange how something so simple, like a little photoshoot around the neighbourhood, can slip through your fingers.

After I moved into my first home, two stray cats regularly hung out near my block. They were friendly and I spent some time getting to know them. I even had plans to do a proper, professional photoshoot with these newfound companions-something special. But then, a few residents started raising concerns about the cats being a disturbance. I thought I'd jump in and find a middle ground before things escalated, so I set up a group chat with the feeders and residents who were fond of the cats.

Unfortunately, things moved quicker than I expected. In the blink of an eye, the group had organised for the cats to be sterilised and fostered, which was great for them-but my chance to do that photoshoot? Gone. The cats were in good hands, yes, but I couldn't help but feel like I'd missed my moment.

Understanding Cat Photography

What Is Cat Photography?

Cat photography is a specialised form of pet photography that focuses on creating photographs of cats, either on their own or together with their owners and family members. The photographs can range from simple portraits that show how the cat looks to more natural photographs that capture its expressions, behaviour and personality.

Unlike photographing people, I can't simply explain a pose to a cat and expect it to cooperate. Some cats may be curious about my equipment, while others may hide, lose interest or decide that the opposite side of the room is suddenly much more exciting. Instead of trying to force every cat into a predetermined pose, I have to observe its behaviour and work with the opportunities it gives me.

The environment can make a significant difference as well. Photographing a cat at home allows it to remain in familiar surroundings and gives me opportunities to incorporate places where it naturally spends its time. Depending on the cat's temperament and experience, other suitable locations may also be possible, but I wouldn't assume that every cat will be comfortable being transported somewhere unfamiliar purely for a photoshoot.

Cat photography can be technically challenging because cats can move quickly and unpredictably, while indoor homes may not always have ideal lighting or uncluttered backgrounds. I have to balance getting into a useful position, finding suitable light and reacting quickly without disturbing the cat so much that its behaviour changes completely.

For me, good cat photography isn't about making every cat sit perfectly and look directly into the camera. Sometimes the photographs that best represent a cat come from its natural expressions, habits and interactions with the people around it. Understanding the individual animal and being willing to adapt the photoshoot around its behaviour can therefore be just as important as the technical photography itself.
