The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

What Is Bridal Photography?

Bridal photography focuses specifically on creating portraits of the bride, with greater attention given to her appearance, bridal gown, makeup, hairstyle, accessories and other details that form the complete bridal look. It can be photographed as part of an actual wedding day or arranged as a separate portrait session where there is more time and control to concentrate on the bride.

This makes bridal photography different from general wedding photography. Wedding photography may document the couple, families, guests, ceremonies and events throughout the celebration, while bridal photography places the bride herself at the centre of the photographs. It can also overlap with prewedding photography, although a prewedding session usually focuses on the couple rather than specifically on bridal portraits.

The bridal styling itself gives me many elements to work with photographically. Besides creating portraits of the bride, I can use the shape and movement of the gown, veil, bouquet, jewellery and other details as part of the composition. The appropriate posing and lighting can also depend on the design of the gown, hairstyle and makeup, so I consider the complete look rather than treating them as separate elements.

The amount of control I have depends greatly on when the bridal photographs are created. During an actual wedding day, there may be limited time between makeup, ceremonies and other activities, so I have to work efficiently with the available location and lighting. A dedicated bridal session gives us considerably more freedom to choose the location, timing, lighting and poses, and to spend more time refining individual photographs.

For me, good bridal photography is about creating flattering portraits while also paying attention to the details that the bride has spent considerable effort preparing for the occasion. Instead of concentrating only on her face, I want the photographs to show the overall bridal look as well as meaningful details, while adapting the style to her personality and preferences.
