Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For automotive photographs, the lighting choice affects how the vehicle's shape, finish and reflections appear.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

When choosing a package for automotive photography, the most suitable option depends on the session duration, number of people, number of final photographs, location, lighting requirements, level of editing and whether the photographs are for personal or commercial use.

Studio or venue hire, location permits, travel, special props or styling, additional lighting or manpower, advanced retouching, urgent delivery and other optional services may involve additional charges where relevant. Hello! I'm Skai, a professional photographer based in Singapore. While I can't afford a car (not yet, at least), and I'm a bit too shy to give a motorbike a go, I've found my own way to make life fulfilling-by helping others personalise stunning, high-impact photos with their beloved vehicles.

Growing up in a family where money was tight, owning a car was something I never even dreamed about. There were times when we struggled just to put food on the table, so thinking about vehicles was way out of my reach.

After working for so many years as a professional on-location photographer, I see the necessity to own a car. Many of my clients need high-end photography, which often requires a lot of gear and having a car became essential-especially in a city like Singapore where public transport can be cramped and expensive.

Although owning a car wasn't something I ever imagined as a child, I understand why people hold their vehicles in such high regard. I also know the deep emotional connection people have with their cars and motorbikes. Some of my friends talk about their vehicles like they're family! Helping others has always been a big part of who I am, so I know I could help capture that special bond between people and their cars.

I first began doing automotive portraits for clients during their weddings, where cars often played a symbolic role in the celebration. What Is Automotive Photography?

Automotive photography is photography centred around cars, motorcycles and other vehicles. Depending on the purpose of the photoshoot, the vehicle can be photographed on its own to showcase its design and details, or together with its owner to create more personal portraits that reflect the relationship between the person and the vehicle.

The style can vary considerably depending on the vehicle and what the photographs are for. A photoshoot might focus on clean exterior photographs, distinctive details, modifications and accessories, or take a more lifestyle-oriented approach by incorporating the owner and surrounding environment. The photographs can be created for personal keepsakes, social media, enthusiast portfolios or commercial and promotional purposes.

Automotive photography also presents some interesting technical challenges. Vehicles have large reflective surfaces that can pick up the surroundings, photographer and lighting equipment, while their shape can look very different depending on the camera angle and focal length. Location and lighting are especially important because reflections across the bodywork can either help define the vehicle's shape or become distracting. Outdoor shoots also have to account for changing weather, traffic, available space and other practical limitations.

For me, good automotive photography is about understanding what makes the particular vehicle interesting rather than photographing every car in exactly the same way. I consider its design, colour, modifications and distinctive details, together with the owner's objectives, when deciding on the location, composition and lighting. If the owner is included, I also have to balance the portrait with the vehicle so that neither feels like an unrelated element placed into the photograph.
