Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Skai's Journey as a Couple Photographer

My journey into couple photography began alongside event and portrait shoots, where I sought opportunities to expand my creative repertoire. Starting with friends, I quickly realised the unique dynamics of photographing two people together - guiding their interactions to create natural, heartfelt images. As my portfolio grew, clients began approaching me for couple sessions, recognising the authenticity and emotion in my work.

Over time, couple photography became intertwined with other projects, from surprise proposals and ROM ceremonies to weddings and even interior shoots where couples wanted portraits together. What Is Couple Photography?

Couple photography is portrait photography centred on two people and their relationship. Rather than simply creating two individual portraits within the same photoshoot, I photograph the way the couple looks and interacts together, while also considering their personalities and how comfortable they are in front of the camera.

A couple photoshoot doesn't have to be connected to an engagement or wedding. Some couples arrange one for an anniversary, birthday, holiday or another meaningful occasion, while others simply want good photographs together. The session can be romantic, playful, casual, elegant or more lifestyle-oriented depending on the couple and the kind of photographs they prefer.

Photographing couples involves more than posing two people beside each other. I pay attention to their body positions, expressions, eye contact and interaction so that they look connected rather than appearing like two separately posed individuals. Depending on the couple, I may create more deliberately posed portraits or give them simple actions and directions that allow more natural expressions and interactions to develop.

One challenge is that the two people may have very different levels of confidence in front of the camera. One person may be comfortable being photographed while the other feels awkward or doesn't know what to do. Differences in height, body shape and personality can also affect which poses and camera angles work well, so I don't expect every couple to reproduce the same set of poses.

For me, good couple photography should reflect something about the two people rather than forcing every relationship into the same romantic formula. Some couples are naturally affectionate, while others are playful, reserved or simply more comfortable standing and interacting in their own way. I provide enough direction to create flattering photographs while adapting the session to how the couple naturally relates to each other.

Can we bring props to our photoshoot?
Yes, you can bring props to your photoshoot, such as flowers, balloons or other items that are meaningful to you and your partner. Just keep in mind that the props should complement, not detract from, the overall look of the photos.
How long does a couple photoshoot typically take?
For a casual couple photoshoot session, the minimum amount of time, on average, is around 1.5 hours.

The actual duration of a couple photoshoot depends on various factors. The most important ones are the number of good photos that the couple expects, the number of outfits, the type of lighting used and the travelling time in between the photography spots.

Firstly, the longer time the couple photoshoot lasts, the more chances of good photos will be taken, including different varieties of them.

Secondly, if the couple has to get changed into different outfits, it takes time to find a place to get changed and the new styling will also incur more time.

Thirdly, since flash photography requires frequent testing of light, it will definitely require more time.

Lastly, if the couple wishes to take photos at different spots of the location or even at different locations, much of the booked time will be spent on travelling.

You shouldn't be rushing through a couple shoot if both you and your partner aren't professional models. It also takes quite a bit of time for everyone, including the photographer, to warm up to each other.

Eventually, you should hire a photographer for a longer duration if you truly want to get some well-taken photos with good lighting and expression.
Can we bring our pet to the photoshoot?
Yes, you can bring your pet to the photoshoot if you would like them to be included in the photos. However, please keep in mind that it can be challenging to work with animals, and it's important to let me know in advance so that I can prepare accordingly.
How will the photos be delivered to us?
The photos will be delivered to you digitally, usually via a download link. You will be able to download the photos instantly once they are ready, and they can be downloaded anywhere with internet access.
Will the photos be retouched?
Yes, the photos will be professionally edited and retouched accordingly to the package you opt for. Basic editing will include colour correction, brightness and contrast adjustments, and advanced editing will include skin retouching.
What should a couple wear for pictures?
