We can repeat and refine a movement where necessary rather than relying on a single attempt.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For dance photography, available light supports fluid movement around a location, while planned flash can emphasise shape or freeze selected actions.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

What Is Dance Photography?

Dance photography focuses on dancers, movement and the physical expression of dance. It can involve carefully created portraits and poses, jumps and other movements, or photographs of an actual dance performance. Depending on the type of dance and purpose of the photoshoot, the photographs may emphasise technique, movement, physique, costume, expression or the overall visual character of the dance.

A dedicated dance photoshoot gives me considerably more control than photographing a live performance. I can choose the camera position, lighting and background, ask the dancer to repeat a movement, and refine the timing until we capture it at a flattering point. During a performance, however, I have to anticipate what will happen and work with the stage lighting, choreography and viewpoints available to me without interrupting the performance.

Timing is particularly important because a camera freezes a movement at a fraction of a second that the human eye wouldn't normally examine in isolation. A jump, turn or transition can look graceful at one instant and awkward immediately before or after it. When possible, I therefore work with the dancer to understand the movement and identify the point that best represents the pose, technique or action we're trying to show.

Lighting presents another consideration. Fast movements may require photographic techniques that preserve sharpness, while carefully controlled lighting can help define the dancer's body, clothing and movement. Depending on the concept, however, motion blur can also be used deliberately rather than treating all movement as something that must always be frozen.

For me, good dance photography isn't simply about asking a dancer to perform impressive movements in front of my camera. I have to consider which camera angle, timing, composition and lighting best represent what the dancer is doing. The dancer understands their technique better than I do, while I understand how that movement is being translated into a two-dimensional photograph, so communication between us can make a significant difference to the final images.

The number of photos you'll receive from the photoshoot depends on the package selected and the duration of the shoot. Typically, you can expect to receive a selection of the best images from the session.

Yes, I only provide digital copies. You can select the photos and do the printing by yourself should you need any hard copies.

Yes, all photos undergo professional basic editing. For skin retouching, also known as advanced editing, I charge per photo, which is found in the packages.
