Where We Can Shoot

The right environment can dramatically influence how a photograph is perceived. Luxury photography can be created in many different settings, and an expensive location isn't always necessary. I use lighting, composition, perspective, and careful positioning to make the surroundings work with the image you're trying to create. Once your session is confirmed, I'll help you select a location that suits your desired look.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

When choosing a package for luxury photography, the most suitable option depends on the session duration, number of people, number of final photographs, location, lighting requirements, level of editing and whether the photographs are for personal or commercial use.

Hello! I'm Skai, a luxury photographer based in Singapore. My journey began with an obsession for art rather than making a living. I pursued photography on my own, without studying other commercial photographers, and for a time I was carefree.

When I first got together with my wife, reality struck and I began to panic about our future. My life coach, my "shi fu", Josephine Ong, guided me and changed my perspective. She awakened me when she asked if I wanted to work with high-ticket clients or the mass market. Knowing the quality of my work, she told me I was actually meant to serve people who value the very best. That moment reshaped my path.

I wasn't confident at all, having never checked the rates of other professional photographers. Yet I knew it was impossible for me to work with the mass market. Each project consumed immense effort and left me exhausted regardless of the payment. As an artist, I could only produce top-quality work - anything less would leave me blaming myself to the extent that I might as well have switched to a stable, higher-paying job using my degree. Instead, I chose to perfect my craft, not only in technical mastery but also in client care, assisting clients beyond what they had expected.

My journey into luxury photography was shaped by the guidance of a talented photographer friend and a commercial makeup artist, who helped me set high standards for quality from the very beginning. As someone who has always looked for ways to help others, photography became the perfect platform to give my best while creating meaningful work.

Along the way, I crossed paths with photographers of different tiers, each targeting different kinds of clients. I found myself resonating most with those who worked exclusively with committed clients - the ones who valued quality and professionalism. While I never concerned myself with how others charged, I focused instead on ensuring my own effort was properly compensated. After every few projects, I would revise my packages to reflect the value of my craft and sustain my practice.

Eventually, I discovered that luxury photography sessions allowed me to work with clients who were more dedicated, collaborative, and appreciative of the process. These sessions not only produced better work but also gave me fulfilling experiences that I truly enjoy. Today, luxury photography represents the perfect balance of artistry, professionalism, and connection - a genre that continues to inspire me and elevate both my craft and my clients' stories.

Understanding Luxury Photography

What Is Luxury Photography?

Luxury photography, in the way I use the term, refers to a premium photography experience where greater attention, time and resources can be devoted to planning and creating the photographs. Rather than describing one particular visual style, "luxury" is about the overall level of service and experience surrounding the photoshoot.

A luxury photoshoot can involve more extensive consultation and planning, carefully selected locations, professional makeup and hairstyling, multiple wardrobe changes, specialised venues, more elaborate lighting or other arrangements according to what the client wants to create. Not every luxury session needs all of these elements; the point is that the experience can be developed beyond a simpler photography session when the client's expectations and budget justify it.

I distinguish luxury photography from High-End Photography and Bespoke Photography. My High-End Photography refers more specifically to a technically elaborate photographic approach using professional off-camera lighting, while bespoke photography means tailoring the session around the individual. A photoshoot can therefore be high-end without being a luxury experience, bespoke without being particularly expensive, or combine all three approaches.

Luxury also doesn't necessarily mean that the photographs themselves have to look extravagant. Depending on the client, the desired result could be understated and elegant, fashionable, dramatic, personal or relatively simple. Someone may value privacy, convenience, additional preparation and individual attention more than expensive-looking locations or elaborate styling.

The additional possibilities also introduce more coordination. Locations may need to be arranged, makeup and hairstyling scheduled, outfits prepared, lighting equipment transported and different parts of the session planned around one another. More elaborate ideas can require considerably more preparation before the camera is even used, which is one reason a luxury photography experience cannot be defined simply by the duration of the actual photoshoot.

For me, luxury photography isn't about making an ordinary photoshoot sound expensive or attaching words such as "exclusive" and "premium" to the photographs. It means having the flexibility to devote more resources to the experience when those additional elements genuinely contribute to what the client wants to achieve.
