Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

Natural or available light:
Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.
Off-camera flash:
You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.
Advance arrangement:
Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

My journey into personal photography began with a passion for portraiture. I started by photographing friends and aspiring models, experimenting with lighting and styles to capture their personality. As I shared my work online, requests began to flow in - from professionals seeking corporate images to individuals wanting authentic portraits for social media or even dating profiles. Each experience revealed how powerful photography could be in helping people express themselves, connect with others, and mark important milestones.

What Is Personal Photography?

Personal photography, in the context of my portrait services, refers to photography commissioned primarily for yourself rather than for a business, employer, publication or other commercial purpose. You may simply want good photographs of yourself, document how you look at this stage of your life, try a particular style or concept, celebrate an occasion, or enjoy the experience of having a professional photoshoot.

There doesn't have to be a special occasion or deeper reason for having a personal photoshoot. Some people come to me with a very specific idea they want to create, while others only know that they would like some good photographs of themselves. The session can therefore be kept relatively simple or developed into something much more carefully planned depending on what the person wants.

Personal photography is also extremely broad in terms of visual style. The photographs can be casual, fashionable, glamorous, artistic, lifestyle-oriented, sensual or simply straightforward portraits. We can photograph indoors or outdoors, use natural or available light, or use more elaborate professional lighting depending on the intended result and photography package.

Because there isn't necessarily a commercial brief to follow, I can build the photoshoot more directly around the individual. Their personality, interests, wardrobe, preferred locations, comfort level and ideas can all influence what we create. If they don't have a clear concept, I can also help them work through the possibilities instead of expecting them to arrive knowing exactly how they should be photographed.

Many people aren't accustomed to being professionally photographed and may be unsure about posing, facial expressions or what to do in front of the camera. I don't expect my clients to already know these things. I provide direction during the session and adjust the poses, camera angles and lighting according to the person rather than expecting everyone to follow the same set of poses.

For me, personal photography is ultimately the broadest form of portrait session I offer because the photographs can be created simply for the person themselves. They don't have to satisfy an employer, represent a business or fit a professional profile. This gives us considerable freedom to decide what kind of photographs would actually be meaningful or useful to the individual.
