Once your shoot is confirmed, I'll help determine the location and approach that best suit the type of moments you want to capture.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. Available light usually allows the most freedom for spontaneous moments, while a planned lighting setup suits more controlled portraits.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

When choosing a package for candid photography, the most suitable option depends on the session duration, number of people, number of final photographs, location, lighting requirements, level of editing and whether the photographs are for personal or commercial use.

My journey into candid photography began in the early days of my portrait work, when friends often resisted being photographed. This challenge pushed me to capture them naturally, without forced poses, and sparked my fascination with candid storytelling. Understanding Candid Photography

What Is Candid Photography?

Candid photography captures people in moments that appear natural and unposed, often while they're interacting, moving or concentrating on something other than the camera. Instead of asking someone to hold a deliberate pose and look directly at me, I photograph expressions, gestures and interactions as they happen or create situations where they can happen more naturally.

There are different levels of candid photography. During an event, I may simply observe what's happening and photograph genuine moments without interrupting them. During a portrait session, I may still give some direction by asking the person to walk, move, interact with someone or perform a simple activity. The photograph can therefore look candid even though I've helped create the circumstances that produced it.

This is one reason I don't treat "candid" and "posed" as complete opposites. A natural-looking photograph may still involve careful decisions about where the person stands, the direction of the light, my camera angle and when I press the shutter. The difference is that I try to make the photographic direction less obvious in the finished image rather than making the pose itself an important part of the photograph.

Candid photography can also be technically challenging because good moments don't necessarily happen under ideal photographic conditions. Expressions can disappear within seconds, people move into unattractive lighting or backgrounds, and someone can easily walk between my camera and the subject. I therefore have to anticipate what may happen, position myself appropriately and react quickly without constantly interrupting the moment.

For me, good candid photography isn't simply about taking photographs when people aren't looking at the camera. I'm still paying attention to expression, timing, lighting, composition and whether the moment is actually worth preserving. Sometimes the strongest photograph comes from observing quietly; at other times, a little direction helps create the conditions for something more natural to happen.
