A casual photoshoot can be as simple or spontaneous as you like. We might explore a neighbourhood, visit a favourite place, grab a coffee, go for a walk, or come up with ideas as we go. You don't need to arrive with everything planned. I enjoy working things out on the spot, adapting to the surroundings and finding creative opportunities as they happen.

The photographs can be posed, candid, or somewhere in between. I'll guide you when needed, but I won't force you into a rigid sequence of poses. My flexible approach allows us to play things by ear, have fun, and make use of whatever the location, weather, lighting, or moment gives us.

Where We Can Shoot

Casual photography works particularly well when we have room to explore and improvise. The location doesn't need to be extraordinary. A familiar neighbourhood, favourite café, park, beach or interesting street can become part of the experience. Once your shoot is confirmed, I'll help you choose a location that suits your personality, comfort level and ideas.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

This session uses natural or available light to maintain a relaxed, everyday appearance.

• Natural daylight:

  Outdoor shade, open surroundings and suitable times of day can provide flattering light while keeping the photographs relaxed and recognisable.

• Existing indoor light:

  Window light or suitable ambient light may be used indoors when the location supports the intended appearance.

• Practical support:

  If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

   There are couples who have opted to do casual pre-wedding photoshoots for their wedding instead of more formal wedding photoshoots.
   
   For instance, there was a couple who approached me for a casual pre-wedding photoshoot because they had their official shoot through a bridal studio's wedding package and they didn't like the posey photographs. Therefore, they hired me to capture them in a joyful and natural manner.
   
   There are also other couples who opt for simple casual pre-wedding photoshoots right before or after their ROM sessions. This utilises their wedding hairstyling and makeup since they have to hire a hair and makeup artist (HMUA) to style the bride for their solemnisation anyway.

   A casual business photoshoot is a type of professional photography that focuses on capturing images of individuals or groups in a more relaxed setting. This type of photoshoot can showcase the subjects in a more personal and authentic light, allowing their unique personalities to shine through.

   The couple can use the casual portraits in their wedding montage video to show off good memories to their loved ones on their actual wedding day. Some couples have also used the supposed casual couple photoshoot photographs as on their actual wedding photo albums.

Understanding Casual Portrait Photography

What Is Casual Photography?

Casual photography, in the way I use the term, refers to a photoshoot that is kept relatively simple without excessive planning or preparation beforehand. Instead of developing a detailed concept, carefully coordinating every outfit, scouting multiple locations or planning every photograph in advance, we can start with a general idea and work more freely during the session.

This doesn't mean that the photographs themselves have to look casual. Depending on the person, location, wardrobe and lighting, I can still create flattering, polished, stylish or dramatic portraits. "Casual" describes more of how we approach the photoshoot rather than the visual style of the finished photographs.

A casual approach can work well when the client doesn't have a very specific concept in mind, doesn't want to spend too much time planning, or simply prefers to see what we can create together on the day. We may begin with a suitable location and a few outfits, then explore different backgrounds, poses, angles and ideas as the session progresses.

The trade-off is that less preparation gives us less certainty about exactly what we'll be able to create. Detailed planning can help me anticipate lighting conditions, backgrounds, wardrobe combinations, equipment requirements and potential problems before the photoshoot. With a more casual approach, I rely more on my experience and observation during the session to make decisions according to what is actually available.

For me, casual photography is therefore about keeping the preparation proportionate to what the client needs. Not every photoshoot requires an elaborate concept or extensive planning. Sometimes it's perfectly reasonable to keep things simple, turn up with a general direction and develop the photographs along the way.

   Casual photoshoots tend to have a more relaxed and fun atmosphere, making them a good option for capturing more natural and candid images.

   Casual photoshoots tend to be quicker and less time-consuming than high-end photoshoots, which can be beneficial if you're looking to capture images quickly and without a lot of fuss.

6. Less attention:

   It doesn't attract as much attention from passers-by as compared to high-end photoshoots. Also, the management of some places doesn't allow professional photography and a casual photoshoot may avoid the sight of the security guards.

While casual photoshoots have their advantages, it's also important to keep in mind that they may not offer the same level of quality and detail as a high-end photoshoot. If you're looking for highly polished and professional images, you may be better off investing in a high-end photoshoot.
