A Visual Identity for the Music

Music Photographer in Singapore

I develop portraits from the musician's sound, role and intended audience, using instrument, setting, styling and light as visual information rather than simply placing musical equipment beside the subject.

Music Portrait Photography Sessions in Singapore

Music portraits may support a release, press kit, artist profile, website, poster or social-media campaign. I first consider the sound, role, audience and existing visual identity so the photographs communicate something relevant before the viewer hears the music.

Instruments, performance spaces and equipment can provide context, but they should not become automatic props. I decide with you which details matter, then plan styling, location, expression and lighting around the intended use and the formats required.

The session can create a coherent range of close portraits, wider environmental images and working or performance-related frames. Each should belong to the same artist while giving designers and publications enough practical variety.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

Skai Chan holding a camera for a lightweight photography setup
Natural or available lightA lighter camera setup that allows greater freedom to move around the location.
Skai Chan beside a softbox used for off-camera flash photography
Off-camera flashA planned lighting setup using a separate light and modifier.
  • Natural or available light:

Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

For a practical comparison, read my guide to flash and natural-light photography.

The stunning images you see here feature everyday individuals, not professional models. If they can shine in front of the camera, so can you!

Clients' Testimonials

Professional professional musician pianoist photoshoot session review "I was looking into a photographer to help me take a new portrait for my upcoming music project and stumbled upon Skai's website page that is very transparent about everything including his thoughts and pricing. His sincerity and passion for photography shines through even before I contacted him.

During our correspondence, my conviction grew as Skai was not only considering what I really need but also helps to envisioned what type of shots would be best for me.

At the photoshoot day, he made his way all the way from another coast to my place (because we decided to use my musical instrument as a prop) and made the entire process flows naturally and comfortably.

If you are someone who genuinely seek an artistic photography individual, Skai is who you are looking for. He will make sure that his photos not turns out just nice, but he wants to make sure that his pictures "speak" and radiating your personality. Hence, the process takes time. Once you allow him some time, he will do his magic to your pics!"

Skai the Music Portrait Photographer

Professional music portrait photographer in Singapore Hello! I'm Skai. I help musicians and hobbyists capture their moments - for branding or simply for memory - so they look professional and feel celebrated. I'm a professional music portrait photographer based in sunny Singapore.

One of my childhood dreams was to learn the piano. But growing up in a struggling family, owning a piano - let alone paying for lessons - was out of reach. Back then, there was no internet or YouTube for free self-learning. My very first piano experience came when my mum's boss' daughter gave me a short lesson - imagine a kindergarten kid teaching another.

Life soon placed bigger challenges before me, and I carried on with low self-esteem, eventually giving up the idea entirely. Even today, I still consider myself tone deaf, and my wife often laughs at my "bathroom singing" with wrong lyrics and off-key tones.

But I've found another way to contribute to the music world: through photography. Instead of creating music, I capture it visually. I could never take my eyes off musical instruments - their forms and their ability to produce such varied sounds always amazed me. Over time, I grew to love them visually, and photography became my way of getting closer to them, especially the piano and guitar.

Along the way, I've met wonderful musicians whose personalities shine, though I can't judge their technical skill. I've also met non-musicians who simply love music - people who may never perform on stage, or who sometimes produce a "zap" sound while tinkering with their instruments. They remind me that music is about healing and self-expression, not perfection.

Through photography, I'm thankful for the chance to celebrate these people and their passion. Each portrait is more than an image - it's a reflection of the joy, resilience, and character that music brings into our lives.

Want to know what shaped the way I work today? My photography journey has taught me far more than cameras and lighting.

Skai's Vision & Goals in Music Portrait Photography

My vision and goals in music portrait photography revolve around creating meaningful and impactful images that celebrate the unique connection between musicians and their musical instruments. I want to help everyone document themselves with their favourite musical instruments because these portraits hold immense sentimental value, reflecting the passion and artistry that define them.

Through my photography, I aim to spread love and positivity, using music as a medium to cultivate characters and emotions. Music has the power to touch souls and I want to harness that power to create portraits that resonate with viewers, inspiring them to connect with the musicians and their stories.

Moreover, I see music photography as a useful tool that can serve multiple purposes. From dating profile photography, where portraits with musical instruments can display individuals' interests and passions, to commercial purposes, where musicians' portraits can enhance branding and storytelling, I strive to leverage music as a powerful element in these endeavours.

Additionally, one of my goals is to expand my portfolio by working with more musicians across diverse genres. Collaborating with artists from various musical backgrounds allows me to explore new perspectives and create a richer tapestry of music portrait photography.

Ultimately, my vision and goals in music portrait photography are centred on the idea of utilising the universal language of music to capture and convey emotions, passions and stories. I believe that through my work, I can make a positive impact and contribute to a deeper appreciation of the beauty and significance of music in our lives.

How Skai Began Doing Music Portrait Photoshoots

My journey into music portrait photography began when I was starting in photography. In those early days, I experimented with using musical instruments as props for portrait photoshoots, even though the models weren't real musicians. I found that incorporating musical instruments added a unique and interesting touch to the shoots, sparking my passion for this genre.

As I progressed in my photography career, I seized every opportunity to include musical instruments in portrait photoshoots. It felt like a natural fit and I recognised the value they brought in storytelling and evoking emotions through images.

Eventually, my dedication to music portrait photography caught the attention of a real musician who approached me for a special gift to himself - a photoshoot session that featured his beloved instrument. This experience further fuelled my love for combining music and photography.

As my photography sessions expanded to include dating profile photography, I discovered a new avenue to work with hobbyist musicians. These individuals may not be full-time musicians, but their passion for music is evident. I found great meaning in documenting their connection with music, capturing their love for the art through music portrait photography.

Through these experiences, my journey as a music portrait photographer took shape, and it solidified my belief in the profound significance of music in people's lives. Each photoshoot became an opportunity to celebrate the connection between musicians and their instruments, whether they are professionals or passionate hobbyists. This journey has been incredibly fulfilling, and I'm excited to continue telling stories through the art of music portrait photography.

Understanding Music Portrait Photography

What Is Music Photography?

Music photography, in the context of my portrait services, is photography centred on musicians, singers, bands and people for whom music is an important part of their work or personal interests. The photographs can incorporate instruments, performance, rehearsal spaces or other elements connected with music, or simply present the person in a way that reflects their musical identity.

The purpose can vary considerably. A professional musician or band may need photographs for publicity, websites, social media, album artwork or other promotional materials, while an aspiring musician may want images for a portfolio. Someone who plays music purely as a hobby can also have a photoshoot simply because the instrument or activity is personally meaningful to them.

The instrument can play different roles within the photographs. In some portraits, it may provide context while the musician remains clearly the main subject. In others, the instrument itself can become an important visual element, with attention given to its shape, details and the way the musician interacts with it. Actual playing or performance can also be photographed when movement and interaction contribute to the images.

Different musicians and instruments create different photographic considerations. A guitar can be carried relatively easily and photographed in many locations, while a piano or drum kit usually determines where the photoshoot has to take place. Larger instruments and equipment also affect composition and the amount of space available for my camera and lighting, while reflective surfaces can introduce additional lighting challenges.

If the photographs are intended for professional promotion, I also consider how the musician wants to present themselves and where the images will be used. A classical musician, rock band, singer-songwriter and electronic musician don't necessarily benefit from the same location, wardrobe, lighting or photographic style. I would rather develop the visual direction around the individual or group than apply a generic "musician look".

For me, good music photography should create a meaningful connection between the person and music rather than simply placing an instrument into an otherwise unrelated portrait. Understanding what they play, how important music is to them and what they need the photographs for helps me decide how prominently the musical element should influence the photoshoot.
