Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. For headshots, a controlled lighting setup can provide consistency, while suitable available light can support a quicker on-location session.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

What Is Corporate Headshot Photography?

Corporate headshot photography creates professional portraits for people representing themselves, their profession or an organisation. The photographs are commonly used for company websites, LinkedIn profiles, staff directories, business profiles, press releases, presentations and other corporate or professional materials.

It is a more specific form of headshot photography. While a general headshot can be created for personal, acting, modelling, dating or many other purposes, a corporate headshot needs to consider how the person should be presented professionally. Depending on their profession, seniority, industry and intended audience, the appropriate image might be formal and authoritative, friendly and approachable, modern and relaxed, or somewhere in between.

Corporate headshots can be photographed individually or as part of a larger company photoshoot. For individuals, I have more freedom to personalise the lighting, background and overall presentation. When photographing an entire company or team, consistency becomes more important because the portraits may eventually appear together on the same website or staff directory. I therefore need to maintain suitable lighting, framing, camera position and background while still making adjustments for differences between individuals.

The photoshoot doesn't necessarily have to take place in a photography studio. I can create corporate headshots at an office, another suitable business location or against a portable background, depending on the requirements. An office photoshoot can also be more convenient when many employees need to be photographed, although the available space, background and lighting conditions have to be considered beforehand.

One of the challenges is that many professionals aren't accustomed to being photographed. Small differences in posture, head position and expression can noticeably affect how someone appears, so I provide direction rather than expecting the person to know how to pose. At the same time, I don't believe every corporate portrait should be forced into exactly the same expression or personality simply for the sake of looking "professional".

For me, a good corporate headshot should be both technically well created and appropriate for the person using it. Before deciding how formal, relaxed or polished the photograph should look, I consider who the person is, what they do and where the image will be used. The objective isn't simply to create a good-looking headshot, but one that makes sense in its professional context.

You can check out my passport/ IC page. It's quite costly to be honest.

Nevertheless, you may like to take the opportunity to do a studio photoshoot, probably for your LinkedIn and other professional profiles, then you can fit the passport/ IC photoshoot inside the booked duration.
Can I wear my spectacle for my headshot photoshoot?
It's very advisable not to, due to very possible reflection on the glass that may cover part of your eyes. If you insist to, you have to inform the photographer beforehand for the most suitable lighting set-up possible and pay for extra cost for advanced editing to remove any slight reflection that might appear in the photograph(s).

However, do take note that the time for editing will be longer and not all photographs can be edited properly; at the worst case, the reflections may not be able to be removed.
