You don't necessarily have to travel to a photo studio just for a passport or ID photograph. I can provide passport photography at my studio or bring a portable setup to suitable locations in Singapore, depending on the requirements of the photograph and the circumstances of the shoot.

Off-camera flash is the included lighting approach for this session, providing deliberate control over the direction and balance of light.

• Included setup:

  The standard off-camera setup uses one light. Additional lights require more equipment and handling, and cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  The lighting setup must be planned before the shoot so that I can account for transport, setup time, space and venue restrictions.

• Practical fallback:

  If the location or conditions prevent the planned off-camera setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

Hello! I'm Skai, a professional passport photographer in Singapore - a country where overseas travel feels almost like an addiction for many. My old passports often expired long before I renewed them, and in between, I would proudly tell everyone that I couldn't travel.

Truth be told, I dislike travelling. There were three reasons: I was extremely poor, I wanted to plan thoroughly as a perfectionist but never had the luxury of time, and I was too engrossed in my photography work.

My family travelled overseas a few times without me. Back then, I stayed home alone, often frustrated about meals. More often than not, I kept working at my computer, delaying mealtimes until my grumbling stomach forced me to stop.

I did understand that travelling could broaden my mind and spark new ideas. But I overestimated myself, believing I could work 24/7, 365 days a year without real rest. I burned myself out badly - even now, as I'm penning this down, I still feel the effects.

Whenever I needed a new passport, I would take the photo myself, professionally. It was tiring, but I was always proud that my passport photos looked better than most.

As a professional photographer, my family, relatives, and friends naturally turned to me whenever they needed a more professional-looking passport photo. They would come over to my house, where I set up a small home studio with proper lighting and guidance I'd learned through experience.

Understanding Passport Photography

What Is Passport Photography?

Passport photography is a specialised form of identification photography used for passports, identity documents, visas and other official applications. Unlike a normal portrait or headshot, the photograph has to follow specific requirements set by the authority receiving it, so compliance takes priority over creative styling.

These requirements can specify factors such as the dimensions of the photograph, background, positioning and size of the head, facial expression, visibility of facial features, clothing or accessories, image quality and digital file specifications. The exact requirements can differ depending on the document and issuing authority, so I work according to the specifications required for the particular application rather than assuming that one passport photograph format is suitable for everything.

Lighting is particularly important because the face needs to be clearly visible without inappropriate shadows, while the background needs to meet the required appearance. Camera position, posture and head position also have to be controlled carefully because an otherwise good portrait may still be unsuitable for an official document if it doesn't meet the required specifications.

Passport photography is therefore quite different from my usual approach to portrait photography. In a normal portrait session, I can make creative decisions about posing, expression, lighting, composition and background according to the person and the intended style. For an official identification photograph, those choices are much more restricted because the primary objective is to produce a clear and usable identification image.

If the photograph is required for a passport, visa or another official application, I recommend checking the latest requirements from the relevant authority before the photoshoot, particularly if the document is for another country. This allows me to prepare the photograph according to the correct specifications rather than relying on general passport photo conventions.

For me, passport photography is mainly about precision and practicality. The photograph can still be professionally lit and carefully produced, but its most important job is to satisfy the applicable requirements and clearly represent the person for identification purposes.

ICA's Passport/ IC Photo Requirements

Singapore ICA's passport photo requirements are based on specifications by the International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

It's rather "troublesome" with so many rules but we have to be realistic that our IC/ passport photographs are for identification purposes. Imagine that you need to check someone who's entering your premises, you probably want him or her to look like the photograph, which must be clear enough to compare.

• Maximum of 2 MB in file size
• Coloured photo - no black and white photo
• Even lighting / no shadow
• Within the last 3 months
