I prepare the light and background but do not expect a pet to behave like a human model. Patience, timing, familiar people and suitable rewards help me work with the animal's natural attention rather than forcing repeated poses.

The session may take place at home, during a walk or at a permitted pet-friendly venue. Safety and welfare remain more important than completing a rigid shot list, and the plan stays flexible when the animal needs a break.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash. Available light often gives pets more freedom to move naturally, while planned lighting may suit calmer, controlled portraits.

  • Natural or available light:

    Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

  • Off-camera flash:

    You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

  • Advance arrangement:

    Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

How Skai Began Doing Pet Photography

My journey into pet photography started as a simple hobby. I would take pictures of stray animals and my friends' pets as a way to pass the time and capture their unique personalities. It wasn't until I got my own family dog, who quickly became my favourite model, that I realised my passion for capturing the essence of these furry creatures on camera.

As my skills improved, I began to volunteer my pet photography sessions at dog gathering events, taking photos of the pooches in attendance. I genuinely did my best to try to capture every paw friend instead of focusing only on my own family dog, so that I could help every owner leave a good memory. Fortunately, my work was well received and I began to gain recognition for my ability to capture the dogs' individual personalities.

I showcased my work on my social media profiles and online portfolio, where it caught the attention of many who appreciated my ability to create stunning, artistic images of their furry family members. Eventually, pet owners began to approach me, asking me to photograph their own beloved pets.

Dogs and cats are among the most common subjects, but the same broad approach can apply to other pets depending on the animal, location and practical requirements of the photoshoot.

A pet photoshoot can concentrate entirely on the animal or include photographs with its owner, couple or family. Some clients may want clean individual portraits of their pet, while others prefer photographs of everyday interactions, play, movement or the relationship they share. I can also combine these approaches within the same session when circumstances allow.

Unlike photographing people, I cannot simply explain a pose to an animal and expect it to understand what I want. Different pets also behave very differently. Some respond well to commands, treats, toys or their owner's attention, while others may be shy, easily distracted or simply uninterested in cooperating. I therefore have to observe the animal and adapt the photography around its behaviour rather than trying to force every pet through the same sequence of photographs.

The choice of location can make a considerable difference. A familiar home may be more comfortable for some animals and can provide photographs within their everyday environment, while suitable outdoor locations can provide more space for movement and activity. The pet's temperament, mobility and familiarity with unfamiliar people, places and other animals should all be considered when deciding where to photograph.

Pet photography can also be technically demanding because animals may move suddenly and unpredictably. I have to consider shutter speed, focus, camera position and lighting while watching for expressions, movements and interactions that may last only briefly. When using photography equipment around an animal, I also need to consider how it reacts to unfamiliar objects, sounds or flashes rather than assuming every pet will be comfortable with the same setup.

For me, good pet photography isn't necessarily about getting an animal to sit perfectly still and look directly into the camera. Sometimes that photograph is useful, but the animal's natural behaviour, expressions and interactions can be equally important. I would rather adapt to the individual pet and photograph what makes sense for it than expect every animal to behave like a trained human model.
