Every Image Has Something to Say
Editorial photography is about telling a story through carefully crafted imagery. Whether created for magazines, publications, marketing campaigns, fashion features, personal projects, or branded content, editorial photographs combine visual impact with narrative purpose, helping viewers engage with the subject beyond a single image.
Unlike traditional portrait photography, editorial work often involves a stronger emphasis on concept, styling, atmosphere, and visual storytelling. Every element-from location and wardrobe to lighting, composition, and expression-is considered in relation to the story being told. The goal is to create images that feel purposeful, cohesive, and capable of holding attention while communicating a clear message or mood.
Each editorial project is tailored to its intended audience, publication, or creative objective. Through thoughtful planning and a collaborative approach, we create distinctive imagery that balances artistic vision with professional execution, resulting in photographs that are visually compelling, memorable, and suitable for a wide range of editorial and commercial applications.
Conceptual or fashion-forward shoots for publication.
Mood-driven imagery with a narrative slant.
Polished editorial-style images to accompany write-ups.
Editorial photography is designed for:
Create imagery that supports a narrative, communicates ideas, and helps audiences connect with your message.
Develop photographs with a recognisable style, mood, and personality that set your project apart.
Produce imagery that complements written content while adding depth, context, and visual interest.
Transform ideas, themes, and artistic visions into photographs that feel cohesive and purposeful.
Use location, lighting, styling, and composition to create imagery that evokes specific emotions and reactions.
Produce editorial-style visuals that feel engaging, authentic, and suitable for both print and digital platforms.
Create memorable imagery that attracts attention without relying on gimmicks or short-lived trends.
Develop a collection of images that showcases creativity, consistency, and artistic direction.
Photographs designed to remain visually relevant and impactful long after publication or campaign launch.
Work closely with a photographer who can contribute ideas while helping bring your concept to life.
Editorial photography combines storytelling, creativity, and visual impact to create imagery that feels purposeful, memorable, and emotionally engaging. To refine your ideas before we plan the details, read my guide to defining your photoshoot goals and consider which photographs, purpose, and experience matter most to you.
Editorial shoots require style, mood and intention. I shoot across Singapore, bringing pro lighting and creative vision to any space, anytime. Once we confirm your session, I'll help match the concept with the right location.
The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.
Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.
You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.
Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.
For a practical comparison, read my guide to flash and natural-light photography.
The stunning images you see here feature everyday individuals, not professional models. If they can shine in front of the camera, so can you!

Clients' Testimonials
"Engaged Skai for a fitness indoor photoshoot and he was great! Skai is really patient and understanding, especially when I can be a demanding clientzilla (which I did not turn into) because of how professional and attentive he was. Skai was easy to speak with, which made the whole process smooth as we spoke through our expectation and reality at the beginning. He was very prompt in delivering the contact sheet and final images. Will recommend him :)"

In the world of editorial photography, my vision and goals are shaped by the intriguing nature of this genre and the diverse purposes it serves. Editorial photography, by its very essence, is an avenue for storytelling. It can be a visual journey that conveys a message, an emotion or a narrative, all of which captivate the viewer.
Creativity becomes the lifeblood of this endeavour. Each shoot is a canvas, waiting for a unique story to unfold and it's the task of the photographer to craft images that resonate and connect. The ever-changing venues, often unpredictable, add an element of excitement and challenge. They can be grand or intimate, indoors or outdoors, in well-lit spaces or dimly lit corners, which is where experience and a well-equipped photography arsenal become indispensable.
My primary goal in editorial photography is to produce high-quality and meaningful photos. I want each image to be a visual masterpiece that not only meets but exceeds the client's goals. It's about creating images that have an impact, that serve a purpose and that leave a lasting impression. Whether it's a business campaign, a personal project or any other endeavor, my vision is to capture the essence of the subject and tell a story that resonates deeply with the viewer. It's a blend of artistic creativity, technical expertise and a commitment to delivering results that define my path in the world of editorial photography.
I started by doing portrait shoots and showcasing my growing portfolio online. As my body of work expanded, clients began to take notice, approaching me not only for portraits but also for event and interior shoots.
One of my early forays into editorial photography was a significant milestone. An interior company, looking to feature their work in a magazine, reached out to me for a photoshoot that would highlight their creations. This project not only fuelled my enthusiasm but also introduced me to the intricacies of shooting for publications.
The story continued to evolve as an advertising company sought my expertise for a multi-faceted project encompassing portraits, product photography and interior shots. This multifaceted endeavour marked a turning point, demonstrating my capacity to handle a diverse range of photography needs.
Soon, clients began approaching me specifically for editorial portrait shoots, with a focus on images intended for interviews and marketing purposes within magazines.
It was a nervous start, recognising the importance of these images, but with every shutter click, I poured my best efforts into each editorial project, determined to create visuals that would make a mark in the world of publications.
I love editorial photography for a multitude of reasons that have woven a beautiful tapestry of passion in my professional journey:
Editorial photography is a dynamic category where I can explore a multitude of photography genres. It's an ever-evolving canvas that encourages me to step out of my comfort zone and create compelling visuals, proving that I can produce exceptional work regardless of the genre. This diversity keeps my creativity alive and thriving.
Through editorial photography, I've had the privilege of crossing paths with established and accomplished individuals. It's not just about capturing their images but also the opportunity to learn from their experiences and soak in their positive energy. What's truly heartwarming is when these accomplished figures treat me not as a mere photographer but as a friend. It's a testament that in this world, kindness transcends wealth and this inspires me. This connection, even without tangible gains beyond friendship and my standard photography fee, is something I cherish deeply.
The joy of editorial photography lies in having my work seen by a broader audience, even if my name isn't always in the limelight. It's about creating images that tell stories and evoke emotions and when they find their way into magazines, they reach countless readers and resonate with them. It's the satisfaction of knowing that my visuals have the power to move people, even if it's from behind the scenes.
In essence, editorial photography isn't just a profession; it's a beautiful journey that enables me to explore, connect, and make an impact. It's a calling that I embrace with open arms, driven by my love for storytelling and the boundless creativity it offers.
Editorial photography has been a profound source of personal and professional growth in my life:
Through this journey, I've had the privilege of interacting with established individuals from various fields. Each encounter has been a learning experience, where I've gleaned insights, knowledge and perspectives that have enriched my understanding of the world. It's like receiving first-hand wisdom from mentors, a priceless aspect of growth.
Editorial photography's dynamic nature offers a playground for creative exploration. It's a genre where I get to dive into different kinds of photography, from portraits to interiors, requiring on-the-spot creativity to solve photography challenges. This process hones my decision-making skills, sharpening my ability to think on my feet and adapt to ever-changing circumstances.
Working on photography projects involving established figures has significantly boosted my confidence. Standing beside accomplished individuals, sharing ideas and creating impactful visuals instils self-assurance, pushing me to aim higher. Furthermore, sincere compliments from these figures act as a morale boost and a testament to my craft's worth. Their genuine recognition of my dedication and creativity fuels my confidence, driving me to reach greater heights in editorial photography.
Editorial photography is not limited by boundaries. It's taken me to different corners of Singapore, allowing me to explore the rich tapestry of cultures, locations and stories within this vibrant city. This exploration has broadened my horizons, opening my eyes to new experiences and the diverse beauty of the world I live in.
In essence, editorial photography is more than a profession; it's a life-enriching journey that fosters learning, creativity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the world around me. It's a testament to the idea that growth is not confined to one's comfort zone but thrives on the diversity of experiences.
Editorial photography creates photographs to accompany, illustrate or strengthen a story, article, interview, feature or other published content. Instead of existing purely as standalone portraits or promotional images, editorial photographs are usually created with a particular subject, story or context in mind.
Editorial photography can take many forms. I might photograph a person in their workplace to provide context for an interview, create a more carefully styled portrait for a magazine feature, document an activity connected to the story or produce a series of photographs showing different aspects of the subject. The appropriate approach depends on what the publication or story is trying to communicate.
This means editorial photography doesn't necessarily have to look dramatic or highly artistic. Sometimes a simple portrait with meaningful surroundings tells the story more effectively than an elaborate setup. At other times, unusual lighting, styling, locations or compositions can help create a stronger visual interpretation of the subject.
Editorial photography can overlap with branding photography, but their purposes are different. Branding photographs are generally created to help a person or business present themselves in a particular way, while editorial photographs primarily serve the story or publication. It also differs from catalogue photography, where consistency and clear presentation of products are usually more important than storytelling.
One challenge is balancing the needs of the story with the practical conditions of the photoshoot. I may have limited time with the person, restricted access to a location or an environment that wasn't designed for photography. The photographs may also need to work within different publication layouts, so creating useful variations in composition, orientation and framing can be important.
For me, good editorial photography starts with understanding the story rather than deciding on a photographic style first. I want to know who or what the feature is about, what readers should understand from it and how the photographs will be used. From there, I can decide whether the story is better supported by a straightforward portrait, an environmental photograph, something more creative or a combination of different images.
