Where We Can Shoot

Professional photography can take place almost anywhere in Singapore. The right location depends on what you're photographing, how the images will be used, and the atmosphere or visual style you want to create. Some assignments work best in a controlled studio environment, while others are more meaningful or effective at your workplace, home, event venue, outdoors, or another location relevant to the subject. Once I understand your requirements, I'll advise on the most suitable setting and approach.

Lighting Options for Your Photoshoot

The lighting approach is determined by the package you choose. The more basic option uses natural or available light, while other packages may include off-camera flash.

• Natural or available light:

  Natural-light packages use suitable daylight or existing light at the location and usually allow us to move between positions with less setup time. If the conditions require additional support, I may use an on-camera speedlite, normally bounced from a suitable wall or ceiling.

• Off-camera flash:

  You can choose a package that includes off-camera flash or arrange it as a paid add-on where offered. The standard setup uses one light; additional lights cost extra.

• Advance arrangement:

  Off-camera flash must be arranged before the shoot so that I can plan the equipment, timing and location requirements. If conditions prevent the planned setup, I may use an on-camera speedlite instead, bouncing it from a suitable wall or ceiling where possible or using a larger flash modifier when there is no suitable surface.

What Is Professional Photography?

Professional photography generally refers to photography carried out professionally for a client rather than casual snapshots taken without a professional service or responsibility. It can cover many different fields, including portrait, event, wedding, corporate, interior and real estate photography, and doesn't describe one particular photographic style.

On my website, I also use Professional Photography to describe my simpler and more affordable photography approach, particularly for portrait sessions where I work mainly with natural or available light. I use this distinction to help clients understand the difference between these sessions and my High-End Photography, which involves more elaborate professional off-camera lighting and additional setup.

Calling an approach simpler doesn't mean that the photography itself is treated casually. I still consider the location, available light, camera settings, composition, posing and direction while photographing the client. The difference is mainly in the amount of equipment, lighting control, preparation and setup required to produce the photographs.

Working primarily with natural or available light can also make a photoshoot more mobile. Without having to repeatedly position and adjust off-camera lights, stands and modifiers, I can usually move between suitable backgrounds more easily and respond quickly to the environment. This can be particularly useful for outdoor portraits and sessions where we want to explore several shooting spots within the available time.

The trade-off is that available light gives me less control. Its direction, intensity and quality depend on the location, weather, time of day and surrounding environment. A location that photographs beautifully at one time may be much more difficult at another. When greater control over the lighting is important to the intended result, my High-End Photography approach may be more suitable.

Professional photography also involves considerably more than pressing the shutter button during the photoshoot. Depending on the assignment, my work can include communication and preparation beforehand, photographing and directing during the session, followed by culling, editing and delivery afterwards. The time spent taking photographs is therefore only one part of the complete photography service.

For me, professional photography means providing a proper photography service and taking responsibility for the work I deliver. My simpler Professional Photography approach is intended to keep the production practical and more affordable where elaborate lighting isn't necessary, while High-End Photography is available when greater lighting control and production are worthwhile for the photographs we want to create.
