As having a healthy hobby is one of the key attractions, a casual fitness-themed photoshoot is a popular choice. The fitness photoshoot doesn't have to be a bodybuilding kind of shoot - it can also be a casual sport, such as jogging or hiking. Some of them have chosen gym fitness photoshoots, while others have chosen Muay Thai or other martial arts.

Additionally, a fitness photoshoot can also provide an opportunity for individuals to boost their confidence and feel more attractive, which can be beneficial when navigating the dating scene. 13. Anyone: My focus on fitness photography is to present the current state of fitness of my models. You don't have to be a bodybuilder in order to do a fitness photoshoot; you also don't have to have a toned body as well. Of course, let's be realistic that the photographs may not look very flattering if your body has gone extremely out of shape. Eventually, I would advise everyone to take note of their bodies for health purposes.

To put it in simple form, anyone can also do a fitness photoshoot. Outdoor casual fitness photoshoot

High-End V.S Casual Fitness Photoshoot

outdoor fitness photography using studio lighting
(High-end) Outdoor fitness photography using flash light

outdoor fitness photography using natural lighting
(Casual) Outdoor fitness photography using natural light

I do both high-end and casual fitness photography catered to the needs of individuals. Different types of photography may suit different purposes.

High-End Fitness Photoshoot

High-end fitness photography includes the use of professional lighting to help creating very impactful work.

Advantages: The photographs would look more professional with more flattering lighting. They are usually sharper and can be used for large prints (for posters). The model(s) will look more 3D in the pictures. In backlighting situations, the photographs can still look professional.

Disadvantages: It requires the setting up of lighting equipment (and frequent testing of lighting), which results in more effort, time and therefore higher cost. Not all venues allow the setting up of professional lighting.

Casual Fitness Photoshoot

Casual fitness photography depends mainly on natural and ambient light.

Due to the ease and low cost, most people choose this style of photoshoot for social media where the quality of the photographs are "negligible" as long as they are professional looking; high-end photographs are luxuries. Besides, social media platforms usually reduce the resolution of the uploaded photographs, while most users nowadays surf the internet on smaller screens.

Some business owners, such as gym operators, have to choose casual fitness photoshoot over high-end photoshoot due to time constraints. They have to minimise inconvenience to their gym customers while not holding up their staff and models who are involved in the photoshoots.

Advantages: The cost is much more affordable. Less time is required during the photoshoot, and thus lowering the cost of manpower/ models. The image quality is sufficient for general social media and website use.

Disadvantages: The quality of photographs depends largely on the available/ ambient light. The model(s) may look flat in the photographs. Certain directions of the venue may not be suitable for the shoot. Since most people own a smartphone with a camera and DSLRs are more affordable, it may take more effort, skill and creativity in order to create casual fitness photographs that can differentiate from others.

Places to Do Fitness Photoshoot

Fitness photography can be done at both indoor and outdoor locations. I've done fitness photoshoots in gyms, photography studios, tourist attractions, gardens, parks and even off the main Singapore island. All these locations do give different vibes for the fitness photoshoot and thus the choice of location is up to individuals' preferences. My photography services do include offering suggestions, given that you're able to give me as many details as possible.

Outdoor Fitness Photography

(High-end) Outdoor fitness photography using professional flash light. The natural light happened to be harsh and from bad direction at the time of shoot

outdoor fitness photography using natural lighting
(Casual) Outdoor fitness photography using natural light. Fortunately, the natural light happened to be soft at the time of shoot

The most common location for doing a fitness photoshoot is outdoors. Doing an outdoor fitness photoshoot, unlike in a gym and photo studio, usually doesn't require an additional fee for booking the place. On top of that, there won't be a problem finding available slots/schedules. With more variety of scenery, the photographs may turn out to be more interesting.

Challenges of outdoor photoshoot
However, the timing for an outdoor photoshoot is crucial to get good photographs and the team may have to set for an early morning (golden hour) session, primarily for avoiding photobomb in the late afternoon. With interesting backgrounds, the attention of viewers may be diverted to a certain extent, partly depending on the photographer's choice of photography equipment. The weather plays a big part and everyone is subjected to attacks by insects. For people who are self-conscious, it may take a bit of time to get used to the admiration from passers-by.

Photo Studio Fitness Photography

photo studio fitness photography using strobe
(High-end) Photo studio fitness photography using strobe (flashlight)

The best thing about doing fitness photography in a photo studio is the ability to play with interesting lighting to create all kinds of effects. Doing a fitness photo studio photoshoot with a plain background allows the focus to be concentrated on the model. Besides, it's usually much more comfortable than an outdoor place.

Challenges of studio photoshoot
Of course, the setback of a photo studio fitness photoshoot, to some people, is that the plain background may not be interesting enough. Since the focus is solely on the model, the pressure is higher when compared to a gym fitness shoot.

There's also the extra cost to rent a photography studio. Although I can also set up professional lighting at any place, the logistics would be gigantic and thus more manpower and time would be required.

Gym Fitness Photography

gym fitness photography using studio lighting
(High-end) Gym fitness photography using studio light

gym fitness photography using ambient lighting
(Casual) Gym fitness photography using ambient light (Ceiling lamp/ window light)

Doing a fitness photoshoot in a gym is ideal for individuals who want a balance between an outdoor and a photo studio. It provides the same comfort of a photo studio with air-conditioning and clean places to rest at. Having gym equipment in the background makes the photographs more interesting while the equipment resonates well with fitness. At times, the equipment would act as props, which would help greatly in the model's poses. The indoor location protects the photography equipment and the entire team from bad weather and insects.

Challenges of gym photoshoot
It's difficult to find an available and presentable gym. Furthermore, even if permission is granted, the gym photoshoot can likely be done only outside the gym's operational hours so as to avoid photobombs or obstructing the other gym users, especially if it's high-end photography that lighting equipment will be set up. Doing fitness photography in a gym requires additional cost and some gyms do charge around $150/hr for photoshoot.

Gyms usually have mirrors to allow users to self-check their workouts. The mirrors would limit the angle of the photoshoot to avoid having the photographer and his equipment being shown in the background due to reflection. There are also other reflective surfaces such as the machines that have silver surfaces that would bounce light unintentionally.

The design and layout of the gym would largely affect the quality of photographs, especially for casual fitness photography that uses natural/ ambient light. Some gyms use dark themes, such as black walls, which look stylish but certainly affect the quantity of light. Some gyms use very harsh light, which is great for showing bodies but not flattering on faces; in the worst scenario, the lighting is angled from the top, pointing directly to the ground. Some gyms have the luxury of big glass door or windows that would allow natural light to flow in beautifully, however, the mixture of colour temperatures (natural light vs ceiling light) do affect the quality of the photographs; moreover, the strong natural directional light would greatly limit the angle of the gym fitness photoshoot.

The use of professional lighting (high-end photography) could solve or improve the quality of photography for the situations above, however, it has its challenges, such as time and cost.

Your Goals: What Do You Want to Achieve by Hiring a Fitness Photographer?

Look Great on Both Face & Body

Doing a fitness photoshoot normally means the focus would be on your physique. Unfortunately, people often neglect the face.

Skai's strength is in the use of flattering light to reduce the visibility of flaws on his models' faces while keeping them well-lighted. At the same time, he would play with angles to create highlights and shadows on parts that are required.

Creative & Eye-Catchy Fitness Photographs

There is an uncountable number of fitness photographs being taken daily in Singapore. If you were to do a normal fitness photoshoot, your photograph would be just one of the many fitness photographs. Why not do a fitness photoshoot that can produce interesting photographs that can stand out from the rest?

Skai enjoys playing with ideas for his photoshoots. His forte is creating impactful lighting using his photography equipment, skill and experience.

Personalised Fitness Photographs

Everyone can do a fitness photoshoot. However, it takes an experienced and passionate photographer to give suggestions and point out potential flaws that might degrade the quality of the photographs.

Skai has been doing bespoke photography to customise photoshoot concepts for individuals. As far as possible, he would try to work on concepts that can relate more to you.

Testimonials: What People Say about Skai

fitness photoshoot session

"This was my first photoshoot of any kind, and after some initial enquiries to a few photographers I had a good feel about Skai. He was very open and informative during our discussions on what I was looking to do, and we bounced a few ideas between us.

For the shoot itself, Skai was highly accommodating and patient. It was not rushed at any point, and I felt at ease and relaxed from the moment we met up. I enjoyed myself throughout, and it felt like I was chatting to a friend.

I was delighted with the final set of photos I received. Skai worked on the pics and returned to me very quickly. Some of the direction I received on different poses during the shoot, they came out much better than I had in my mind at the time. I thank Skai so much for such an excellent experience for my maiden shoot." - Liu Wing Lun

FAQs

  1. Should I workout before a photoshoot?
You should exercise for a short while right before the photoshoot begins to pump up yourself. Conserve your energy for you may likely need to be flexing your muscle a lot throughout the photoshoot.
  2. Should I wear a shirt for the photoshoot?
If the goal is to show off your physique, unlike a lifestyle fitness shoot, it's most advisable to show off as much skin (muscle) as possible. For the males, I would definitely advise topless; for the females, do consider using a sports bra or bikini top.
  3. How should I pose for fitness pictures?
In general, I would direct my photoshoot in a way that I can capture candid pictures that are more natural. Of course, it depends on the model and the type of fitness shoot that I'm doing.
  4. Can you add a six-pack to my body?
No. It requires using another suitable (in terms of lighting, angle.. etc) image with a six-pack and it's not easy to make the finished photograph look natural. I don't want to hurt my own reputation and I don't give empty promises.
  5. Can you remove my stretch marks and make me look slimmer?
Yes (in most cases), and this is under advanced editing. However, do take note that not all photographs can be edited; it depends on many factors.
  6. Which camera is best for fitness photography?
There is no best camera for fitness photography and what matters most is the photographer who's executing the shoot.

Different ranges of DSLRs would suit different kinds of fitness photography. In general, it's advisable to use a full-frame DSLR because of its low-light capability.

For those natural light (or ambient light) fitness photoshoots that require capturing of action or with high movement, it's more suitable to use DSLR which has a better burst mode.
