Why Clients Trust Skai Chan Photography
Why Portraits Matter
Portrait photography is about more than appearance. It captures personality, character, emotions, and the unique qualities that make each individual different.
Professional portrait photography can:
- capture authentic personality
- create meaningful and timeless images
- celebrate important life milestones
- preserve memories for future generations
- provide professional-quality photographs you'll be proud to display
A strong portrait can tell a story, create a connection, and preserve a moment in time.
Portrait Photography Sessions in Singapore
A good portrait should feel like you, not simply look like you. It can reveal personality, confidence, character, relationships, or a side of yourself that doesn't always come through in an ordinary photograph. Portrait photography gives you the opportunity to be photographed with the care and attention that a quick snapshot simply can't provide.
I don't believe there's one correct way to make a portrait. Some people prefer something natural and understated, while others want something dramatic, elegant, creative, or distinctly editorial. I use professional lighting, thoughtful composition, and gentle direction to shape the photographs around you, while leaving room for your own expressions, ideas, and personality to come through.
Portrait photography can be as simple as updating your photographs or as personal as documenting an important chapter of your life. You may need photographs for yourself, your relationship, family, personal branding, a portfolio, social media, professional use, or simply because you've always wanted to be photographed properly. Whatever the reason, the session is tailored to your purpose, personality, and preferred style.
You also don't have to travel to a particular studio or location. I can bring professional portrait photography to your home, office, hotel, workplace, chosen venue, or outdoor location anywhere in Singapore. This makes the experience more convenient while allowing your surroundings to become part of the photographs when appropriate.

Step-by-Step: Skai's Portrait Photography Process
Portrait photography is more than taking pictures-it's about creating images that truly reflect who you are. I want the entire experience to be enjoyable, relaxed and rewarding, with authentic and timeless portraits.
Here's how we'll work together for portraits (in general):
- Understanding Your Vision & Story:
No two people are the same and I believe every portrait should reflect that individuality. Before the shoot, we'll discuss your style and why you want these photos. Whether they're for work, personal milestones or as a gift, I'll shape the session to create meaningful images just for you.
- Choosing the Right Location & Style:
The location and look of your shoot play a big role in how the photos turn out. Whether you love nature, prefer an urban vibe or want the comfort of a studio, I'll help you find the perfect backdrop. If you're unsure about outfits, I'm happy to share tips on styling so you feel confident and look amazing.
- Lighting & Angles That Flatter:
Great lighting and angles can make all the difference. Using a mix of natural and studio lighting, I'll adjust everything to highlight your features best-whether the mood is soft and light or dramatic and bold.
- Making You Feel at Ease:
Let's face it, being in front of a camera can feel a little awkward at first, but I've got you covered. I'll guide you gently through the process and keep the energy light and relaxed so you feel confident and enjoy the experience.
- Posing Help & Natural Expressions:
You don't need to be a pro at posing-I'll guide you with simple, natural movements to ensure everything feels easy and looks great. Whether it's subtle changes or striking poses, I'll help you bring out your personality in every shot.
- Capturing Real Moments:
The best photos often happen in unplanned moments-a genuine laugh, a thoughtful look or just being yourself. I'll watch for those moments and include them alongside the posed shots for a full, authentic collection.
- Thoughtful Composition:
A portrait is more than just the subject-it's about the entire frame. I pay close attention to the background, balance and overall feel of each photo so the final images are both striking and meaningful.
- Real-Time Tweaks During the Shoot:
Throughout the session, I'll keep adjusting things-lighting, poses, angles-so every photo looks polished and intentional.
- Polishing Your Portraits:
I carefully retouch each selected image to enhance the details while keeping everything natural after the session. You'll look your best without losing the realness of the photos.
- Taking Time to Perfect Your Images:
Post-production isn't something I rush. I take my time to pick the best images and refine them so they feel timeless and true to you.
- Easy Digital Delivery:
Once the portraits are ready, I'll send them digitally via a secure link. It's quick, convenient and eco-friendly, so you can easily access your photos instantly.
Working with me isn't just about getting pictures-it's about creating an experience that makes you feel confident and capturing moments you'll cherish for years to come.
Let's create portraits that feel like you. Ready to get started?

What Makes Skai's Approach Unique

As a professional portrait photographer in Singapore, my portfolio showcases polished, authentic portraits that blend flattering light, artistry, technical mastery, and a client-focused approach. Skai's Portraiture Vision
"Beautify the subject and bring the best out of her"
I love portraiture photography because I love making people look good and happy, which in turn will increase their confidence. I take pride in the transformation of girls into beauties through my photography and help them to build confidence and make everyone happy, and I believe happiness is contagious.
Art is a way of life and I'm determined to deliver it tastefully. Due to my frankness and respectfulness, my models trust me, get comfortable and are eventually able to produce nice pictures together even for sensual genres such as art and boudoir.
Everyone has his or her flaws and I have the desire to hide them. With the help of a professional hair and makeup artist (HMUA) and both my photography equipment and skill, the good features of the model can be highlighted. Together with proper props, poses and expressions, everyone can be beautified.
I've been working mostly with non-professional models (as featured on my portfolio) and most of them had no experience nor confidence in a photoshoot. Portraiture photography isn't about getting the most beautiful model to work together but is about how the photographer can bring the best out of the model. Photography is also about capturing the moment to implant the desired looks and improve the visual pleasure of the viewers. Without a doubt, working with an appealing and experienced model has an edge over working with an average one. However, I do like to challenge myself, as long as the model is willing to cooperate fully.
"What shines through most is the model's personality while her looks complement it beautifully."
Skai's Portraiture Style
I began photography with a "crash course" from an experienced photographer friend. Then, a masterclass commercial hair and makeup artist (HMUA) friend drilled me hard on professional styling and commercial standard of photo editing for over a year. Due to these blessed and extraordinary encounters, I've managed to build my foundation differently, including appreciating models and spotting flaws in photographs, and thus I have the edge over most other photography enthusiasts.
-
Ideas / Concepts
I don't like to be mainstream and thus I often make special suggestions. I also love exploiting the creativity of my teams, including models, to combine with my idea to create unique work together.
-
Model's Styling (Hair & Makeup)
I prefer a natural makeup for my portrait photoshoot unless it's a special concept, such as creative makeup shoot. Hence, the makeup and hair stylists who works with me must know my style and I will trust her in her craft.
-
Model's Wardrobe
I'll go through the outfit together to select the most suitable set and avoid fashion disasters. An outfit may be nice but it may not necessarily suit a person, the style we want to create for her, the mood of the concept or even the background. The design, colour and texture do make a difference.
-
Model's Poses
I don't like to over-pose models and I usually go for lifestyle poses that are natural.
-
Body Contact
None. I've been practising safe distancing since the start of my photography journey and way before the pandemic. I'll correct the model verbally and refrain from having any skin contact with her. Any hair and outfit adjustments will be made only with the model's consent if no female assistant is around.
-
Camera & Lenses
I'm using a full frame DSLR. My favourite lens is 24-70mm F2.8L, which is sharp, has good depth of field and covers the range of distance that I usually need, which helps to avoid switching lenses during photoshoots. I may also bring along a wide-angle zoom lens or a prime lens.
-
Photography Lighting
My expertise is in using professional lighting to create eye-catching and flattering light to make the model stands out and look good.
-
Pace of Photoshoot
I work at a slow pace to ensure the best quality of work possible. I try to get everything correct during the actual photoshoot. Working on professional lighting requires much more time than natural lighting.
-
Timing of Photoshoot
For outdoor photoshoots, I'll schedule them at the best timing (golden hour) possible to produce the best photographs.
-
My Attire
Shorts and Sandals usually. I'll be in the most comfortable wear possible to be able to move around freely and also get dirty and wet if necessary. I don't need to look good; I just need to make my models look good.
-
Post-Production
For advanced enhancement, I work towards the commercial standard, which may require hours to work on every picture.
How Skai Began Doing Portrait Photography
When I was working in Clementi ITE, one of my colleagues sighed that she was ageing fast. It greatly affected me because she's an extremely nice and capable lady, and our team was close; most importantly, she's a hot babe who has always being portraying confidence in work. This inspired me to use photography to beautify ladies and keep memories of their beauty.
I didn't have the budget to pay for freelance models to learn portrait photography. I started approaching volunteer models both online and offline to practise, and I met with lots of arrogant rejections. Since most of the models who were willing to do portrait photoshoots with me couldn't do proper makeup, I had to spend a lot of time on PhotoShop (post-production). While I could have expedited the quality of my portrait portfolio fast with the help of professional models, I'm glad the non-models have helped me to learn more of the basics; moreover, my target audience is normal people and not professional models.
My friend, Tricia Lee, saw my enthusiasm and started guiding me along. She spent a huge amount of time and energy going through every photoshoot album with me, to spot tiny flaws and coach me accordingly to the commercial standard. The quality of my portrait work soon improved tremendously and aspiring models started approaching me instead. Then, clients came along.
Why Skai Loves Doing Portrait Photography
Portrait photography is my passion. There's something about capturing the unique beauty and personality of each of my clients that excites me every time. No two people are the same, and it's a real joy for me to showcase that through my lens.
Seeing my clients look and feel confident after a successful portrait shoot is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. I love knowing that my photography can boost their self-esteem and help them see the beauty within themselves. When people feel good about themselves, their happiness is contagious, and it spreads to those around them.
The creative process of portrait photography is what draws me in every time. From finding the perfect location to choosing the right lighting and composition, every shoot is a new and exciting challenge. Collaborating with my clients to capture their true selves in a way that's tasteful, creative, and flattering is a rewarding experience.
Preserving memorable moments in people's lives is another reason why I love portrait photography. Being a part of someone's engagement, wedding, or the birth of their child is an honour that I don't take lightly. These are moments that people will cherish for years to come, and I'm grateful to be able to help preserve them.
Singapore is a city full of unique cultural and natural beauty. As a portrait photographer based in Singapore, I'm constantly inspired by the hidden gems that are perfect for a portrait session. It's an exciting challenge to find new locations and showcase the beauty of Singapore through my photography.
In summary, my passion for portrait photography stems from the uniqueness of each person I photograph, the confidence I can help instil in them, the creativity that goes into every shoot, and the opportunity to preserve memorable moments. Being a portrait photographer in Singapore allows me to combine my passion for photography and my love for this city, resulting in a truly fulfilling profession.
How Portrait Photography has Helped Skai Grow
As a professional portrait photographer, I can say that portrait photography has been one of the most fun and fulfilling experiences of my life. Not only do I get to turn my passion into a career, but it has also helped me to grow and develop in ways that I never could have imagined.
- Observation:
One of the best things about portrait photography is that it's like a treasure hunt. I get to observe people's expressions, postures and demeanours and capture a glimpse of their true selves through my lens. It's like finding a hidden gem in each person and capturing it forever.
- Sociability:
Additionally, portrait photography has helped me to become a social butterfly. I get to meet and interact with a wide variety of people from all walks of life and it's like a never-ending party! I have developed my people skills and I've become more comfortable and confident in social situations.
- Artistic:
Furthermore, portrait photography has also helped me to tap into my inner artist. I have to think outside the box and be more imaginative to capture unique perspectives. It's like solving a puzzle and it's so much fun when you finally get the perfect shot.
- Patience:
Lastly, portrait photography has taught me the beauty of patience. Sometimes it may take a while or multiple clicks to capture the perfect shot but the result is always worth it. It's like a game of hide-and-seek, and the prize is a beautiful photo that is worth all the effort.
To conclude, portrait photography has been an exceptionally delightful and rewarding adventure for me, both professionally and personally. It has helped me to learn and develop a wide range of skills and knowledge that have been priceless in my personal life. I can't wait to take stunning, unique and memorable photos of you.
Tips & Tricks for Portrait Photoshoots
Your Goals: What Do You Want to Achieve from Your Portrait Photoshoot?
Flattery Portrait Photographs
You want to appear good in the photographs in terms of your looks, styling, posing, expression and lighting.
You may be able to get a good hair and makeup artist (HMUA) to style you and you may be good at posing, but you will need a photographer who can see light and even create lighting (flash) to make you look good.
Lighting is the most important element in photography. I usually work on the most flattering soft light possible to make your skin look smoother and better. I take care of styling (outfit, hair and makeup). I select outfits that look flattering on you and suit both the concept and background. I also work with professional hair and makeup artists. To conclude: I beautify you and bring the best out of you.
Professional Portrait Photographs
You may be seeking a casual instead of a high-end photoshoot but the photographs still need to look professional, or otherwise, you might as well pass your phone camera to your grandma to snap your photographs.
The photographs will look professional if everything is well taken care of. From the pre-production to the actual production and post-production, I oversee the processes personally to eliminate possible problems. Most of all, my lighting, photography sense and experience would give a professional look to the pictures.
Creative & Eye-Catchy Portrait Photographs
Every day, many people are doing photoshoots. If you were to do a normal photoshoot, your photographs will likely seem "boring" to others.
Why be normal when you can do something creative and eye-catchy? Your photographs can stand out from the rest!
I have been trying very hard to do interesting photography concepts to feed my passion for photography. Creativity is in my genes; my pursuit of uniqueness helps to create special artwork. My professional lighting equipment enables me to take control of the lighting and create the mood to suit the specific themes. My forte includes dimming the background while lighting up my models, to draw viewers' eyes to them. I also try to invoke the creativity of the entire team to inject more interesting ideas.
Personalised & Meaningful Portrait Photographs
Apart from getting good photographs, you want your photographs to be customised so that they will be more related to you; that's a double win.
I have been doing bespoke photography to custom-make photographs for clients. I work closely with my clients on the concepts, outfits, props, places and other elements to make the photographs unique to them.
Artistic & Classy Portrait Photographs
You may want to include some sexy photographs of yourself but you want them to look tasteful and not like porn.
Regardless of the genre, be it glamour or boudoir, I keep it classy and stylish as artwork.
Natural-Looking Portrait Photographs
You want to look natural in the photographs.
My style of photoshoot not only gives a natural feel, but also allows every inexperienced model to feel comfortable, and relaxed, such that they would give natural expression.
I lean towards the commercial style for photo-editing. I know what to edit, what not to edit and how to edit. I take extra effort to keep the photographs looking unedited (natural).
Safe & Dignified Experience
Be it a normal outdoor or sensual indoor photoshoot, you want to stay safe. Whether you're a guy or a girl, you want to be respected.
I have been practising social distancing since the start of my photography journey, long before the pandemic. That means I will use verbal instructions or self-demonstrations to guide my models, to refrain from having body contact.
Get What You Pay For
Photography can be very complicated. Professional photographers do charge higher photography fees for photoshoots that require more equipment or setup. Many clients don't know the differences.
I always try to find out more details from my clients and estimate if I'm able to accomplish it, before accepting the request. At times, I need to explain the constraints to make sure there's no misunderstanding. For clients who don't have a clear idea in mind, I would try to guide them to a better understanding of what they truly want.
For clients who have high budgets, I would even advise them to save up if they don't need the extra services.
Portrait Photography With & Without Flash
When it comes to photography, there are two main types of lighting that photographers can use: flash and natural light. Both have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, and understanding the differences between the two can help clients make an informed decision about which type of photography is best for their needs.
The cost of photography sessions can vary depending on several factors, including the type of lighting used. Flash photography typically requires more equipment and setup time, making it more expensive than natural light photography. However, the added control and creative options that come with flash photography may be worth the extra cost for certain clients. At the end of the day, the choice between flash and natural light photography ultimately depends on the client's individual needs and preferences.
Natural Light Photography (Professional Photography)
Natural light photography, as the name suggests, relies solely on available natural light sources, such as sunlight or ambient light in a room. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of natural light photography:
-
Advantages:
- Generally less expensive, as it requires less equipment and setup time.
- Creates a soft and flattering look that can enhance the natural beauty of subjects.
- Can produce a more natural and authentic feel to images, capturing genuine emotions and expressions.
- More spontaneous and flexible, as photographers can move around and change angles easily.
-
Disadvantages:
- Limited by the availability and quality of natural light sources, making it more challenging to capture consistent lighting and shadows.
- Can result in underexposed or overexposed images if not shot correctly or in challenging lighting conditions.
- May require more post-processing to achieve the desired look and feel.
- More challenging to freeze motion and capture sharp images in low-light environments.
Flash Photography (High-End Photography)
Flash photography involves the use of artificial light sources, such as strobe lights or speedlites, to illuminate a scene. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of flash photography:
-
Advantages:
- Provides consistent and controllable lighting in any environment, even in low-light conditions.
- Allows for creative control over the lighting and shadows in a scene.
- Can freeze motion and capture sharp images even in fast-paced environments.
- Can create dramatic and eye-catching images that stand out from natural light photography.
-
Disadvantages:
- Flash photography can be more expensive, as it requires additional equipment such as lighting stands, modifiers and triggers.
- Can sometimes create a harsh and unflattering look, especially when used incorrectly or in combination with natural light.
- Can be intrusive and distracting to subjects, making it difficult to capture natural expressions and emotions.
- Will require more time and setup to achieve the desired lighting and composition.
How to Plan for a Successful Portrait Photoshoot in Singapore
If you're planning a portrait photoshoot in Singapore with me as your photographer, here are some tips to help make the experience a success:
- Discuss your vision and goals:
Before the photoshoot, we will have a consultation to discuss your vision and goals. This is the time for you to tell me what you're looking for in terms of style, location and any other details you want to include.
- Choose the right location:
Singapore has many great locations for a portrait photoshoot, both indoors and outdoors. Based on our consultation, I can recommend some locations that would suit your needs and preferences.
- Select your outfit and accessories:
What you wear for the photoshoot can greatly affect the final outcome of your portraits. Choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident, and that complements the location and style of the shoot.
- Consider hair and makeup:
Professional hair and makeup can make a big difference in the final look of your portraits. I can recommend some trusted professionals in Singapore if you're interested in this service.
- Be on time and be prepared:
On the day of the photoshoot, make sure you arrive on time and with everything you need. Bring any props, accessories or additional outfits you may need and make sure you're well-rested and hydrated.
- Relax and enjoy the experience:
It's natural to feel a bit nervous or self-conscious during a photoshoot, but try to relax and enjoy the experience. Remember, the goal is to capture your unique personality and beauty, so just be yourself and have fun!
Overall, a successful portrait photoshoot in Singapore is all about communication, planning and having fun. With my expertise and your vision, we can create beautiful portraits that you'll treasure for a lifetime.
What to Discuss for a Portrait Photoshoot?
When planning a portrait photoshoot with me, it's important to discuss your vision and goals to ensure that we are on the same page. This will help me understand what you are looking to achieve and ensure that the final product is exactly what you envisioned.
To start, think about the overall tone and feel that you want your portraits to have. Do you want them to be more traditional and formal, or do you prefer a more candid and relaxed style? It's also important to consider the purpose of the photos - are they for personal use, such as family portraits or a dating profile, or are they for professional use, such as corporate headshots or branding?
Once you have a clear idea of what you want, communicate your vision to me. This can include showing me examples of the type of portraits you like, discussing specific poses or settings, and any props or wardrobe choices you have in mind. It's good if you can show me samples of work found in my portfolio because every photographer has his own style and I may not be able or comfortable following another photographer's work.
I can also provide input and suggestions based on my expertise and experience, helping to fine-tune your vision and ensure that it's achievable within the constraints of the shoot. Together, you can work to create a clear and detailed plan for the photoshoot that aligns with your goals and vision, ensuring that the final product is everything you wanted and more.
