Some couples wish to include some casual couple photographs inside the wedding album.
  2. Good Opportunity during an Event

  6. Document a Common Interest
Couples usually have common interests or hobbies and may want to document them by doing a couple photoshoots. It can be a sport, collection or even vehicle.
  7. Document a Place
For example, their house. The home provides security and it's the place that allows one to rest and recharge. Therefore, couples may wish to do a home couple photoshoot to commemorate their houses.

There are also other places that can be meaningful to couples and they may want to do a couple photoshoot over there as well. It can be their office, the place they had their first date or even any beautiful place that they love.

Your Goals: What Do You Want to Achieve by Hiring a Couple Shoot Photographer?

Professional & Flattery Couple Photographs

You want to look good in the photographs.

Skai's forte includes anticipating possible problems that might surface during the actual photoshoot. He learns it the hard way - trial and error - and his past experiences greatly improve his skill. There's no perfect photoshoot regardless of the great amount of planning work being put in; however, the chances of them occurring during the photoshoot can be reduced greatly.

Not many non-professional photographers know about the constraints of photography. Instead of blindly accepting all projects for the sake of money and leaving room for arguments in future, Skai will try to clarify the requirements. He has spent over a thousand hours working on this entire website and he has stated many facts about photography that not all potential clients may be happy to hear. He always tries to explain the situation and suggest the best way to get things done within the constraints, including clients' budgets.

The quality of his work can be seen on various pages of this website; you will get what you see if you fully cooperate with him. He focuses a lot on lighting, which is one of the most important aspects of photography. He looks at the lighting of the location to find the best spot and angle possible.

Natural-Looking Couple Photographs

You want your photographs to look very natural.

Skai works on lifestyle and freestyle poses that don't seem like posing. On top of that, non-professional models will be able to do it too.

Creative & Eye-Catchy Couple Photographs

Why choose to do a normal couple when you can do something unique and interesting?

There's no standard template. Skai is an artist who will get bored if he were to do the same thing over and over again. He tries hard not to create similar pictures for different clients. That means he will always try to go to different places and do different concepts/ themes. He also empowers his models to get involved in creating unique ideas.

Meaningful & Personalised Couple Photographs

Apart from looking nice, you would probably prefer your couple photographs to be more meaningful.

Skai encourages doing photoshoots that are more meaningful to the couples. Whenever possible, he would advise couples to do couple photoshoot concepts that can relate to the couples or their stories. Even a couple photography without flash can be done more meaningfully.

Fun Experience

While the main motive of doing a couple photoshoot is to get good photographs, you want to have fun during the photoshoot as well.

Skai's easygoing personality, together with his cold jokes, help to create a relaxed environment. His photography style allows you to be more comfortable. Skai adores teamwork and he doesn't dictate everything.

How to Plan for a Successful Couple Photoshoot?

  1. Choose a location: Choose a location that is meaningful to you and your partner, it can be a place where you had your first date or a place that holds special memories. This will help you feel comfortable and relaxed during the photoshoot.
  2. Plan your outfits: Choose outfits that are comfortable and that you feel good in. Coordinating colours and styles can add visual interest to your photos. Avoid clothes with bold patterns or logos, as they can be distracting.
  3. Decide on the style of photography: Decide on the style of photography that you prefer, whether it be more traditional or candid, posed or natural. This will help me understand your vision and tailor the photoshoot to your preferences.
  4. Schedule the photoshoot: Schedule the photoshoot for a time when the lighting is best, whether it be early morning or late afternoon. This will ensure that the photos are well-lit and have a natural, warm tone.
  5. Communicate with your photographer: Communicate with me prior to the photoshoot to discuss any specific shots or poses you would like, and to share any ideas you have. This will help me understand your vision and create the best possible photos for you.
  6. Be relaxed: Remember to have fun and be relaxed during the photoshoot. The more comfortable you are, the better

Locations for Couple Photoshoots

  1. Outdoor locations: Nature provides a beautiful and natural background for couple photoshoots. Consider having your photoshoot at a local park, beach, or garden. These locations offer a variety of backgrounds such as lush greenery, water, and natural light, which can add depth and interest to your photos.
  2. Urban locations: Cityscapes and architecture can make for unique and interesting backgrounds. Consider having your photoshoot in a downtown area, or a specific location like a bridge, or a rooftop with a city view.
  3. Home locations: Having a photoshoot in the comfort of your own home can create a more intimate and personal feel. This can be especially nice if you want to capture more candid and natural moments.
  4. Festival locations: Festival locations such as Christmas markets or other special events offer a unique and festive background for your photoshoot. The lights, colours and decorations of these locations can add a special touch to your photos.
  5. Special locations: If there is a special location that holds meaning for you and your partner, such as where you first met or where you got engaged, consider having your photoshoot there. This will add sentimental value to your photos.
  6. Professional photography studios: Professional photography studios also offer a great option for couple photoshoots, they have controlled lighting and backdrops, this will provide a variety of settings with a professional touch.

Wardrobe to Wear for Couple Photoshoots

  1. Coordinating colours and styles: Choose outfits that coordinate well with each other in terms of colour and style. This will add visual interest to your photos and create a cohesive look.
  2. Comfortable clothing: Choose clothing that is comfortable for you to wear. You will be more relaxed and natural in front of the camera if you are comfortable in what you are wearing.
  3. Avoid bold patterns and logos: Avoid clothing with bold patterns or logos as they can be distracting in photos. Stick to solid colours or simple patterns.
  4. Dress for the location: Consider the location of the photoshoot and dress accordingly. If you are having a photoshoot in a park, for example, you may want to wear something casual and comfortable. If you are having a photoshoot in a more formal setting, you may want to dress up a bit more.
  5. Accessorise: Accessorise your outfit with simple jewellery, a scarf, or a belt to add visual interest to your photos.
  6. Consider the season: Consider the season of your photoshoot and dress accordingly. If it's cold, wear warm clothing and layers, if it's hot, wear light clothing and breathable fabrics.
  7. Think about the final outcome: Keep in mind that the final outcome of the photoshoot is not only about you looking good but also about the overall feel and atmosphere of the photos, so think about the final look you want to achieve.

Couple Photography Lighting

high-end couple photography
(High-end) Outdoor couple photography using flash light
Couple Photography Without Flash
(Casual) Outdoor couple photography using natural light

Both types of photoshoots have their pros and cons. It's up to individuals to decide which is most suitable and doable for the theme.

I've highlighted some of the major pros and cons of both of them below. For very detailed explanations, do view my article on differences between high-end and casual portrait photography.

On a side note, during a high-end photoshoot, the photographer can switch to natural light whenever required (eg. lack of time, premises don't allow any set-up); a casual photoshoot cannot be switched to a high-end photoshoot (eg. during backlight situation, extremely harsh sunlight) since the photographer won't be bringing his lighting equipment along.

Couple Photography With Flash

High-end photoshoot involves professional lighting. It's more complicated and difficult to do.

Advantages:
With the aid of professional lighting, the photographs will likely be more eye-catching. There's more flexibility in the angle of the shoot since backlighting problems are more likely to be overcome; beautiful sunset photographs can be captured. The photographs will eventually look more professional.

Disadvantages:
The greatest disadvantage of using professional lighting is its portability. It's extremely difficult to travel with big and bulky equipment. It also takes a much longer time to set up the lighting. Testing of light is needed whenever there's a change of angle or spot of the model; even a step forward or backward would affect the exposure. If travelling is required in between shooting locations, it will require extra time and effort to dismantle the equipment, and set it up again at the next location.

Couple Photography Without Flash

Casual photoshoot depends on natural (sunlight) or ambient light (existing lamps with or without a mixture of sunlight).

Advantages:
The couple photoshoot can be done much quicker using natural than professional lighting; given the same amount of time, more photographs can be snapped. It's also easier for the photographer to focus on the expression during the couple photoshoot.

Disadvantages:
The quality of the photographs is very much affected by the weather (sun). There will be directions that the photoshoot can't be done, for example, during a backlighting situation (sunset). Since DSLR is easily available, it's more difficult for casual photographs to stand out from the crowd; unlike high-end photography which requires extra equipment and more skill to execute.

FAQs

  1. How do we prepare for our couple photoshoot?
It's important to choose outfits that are comfortable and that you feel good in. Coordinating colours and styles can add visual interest to your photos. Avoid clothes with bold patterns or logos, as they can be distracting.
  2. Can we bring props to our photoshoot?
Yes, you can bring props to your photoshoot, such as flowers, balloons, or other items that are meaningful to you and your partner. Just keep in mind that the props should complement, not detract from, the overall look of the photos.
  3. How long does a couple photoshoot typically take?
For a casual couple photoshoot session, the minimum amount of time, on average, is around 1.5 hours.

The actual duration of a couple photoshoot depends on various factors. The most important ones are the number of good photos that the couple expects, the number of outfits, the type of lighting used and the travelling time in between the photography spots.

Firstly, the longer time the couple photoshoot lasts, the more chances of good photos will be taken, including different varieties of them.

Secondly, if the couple has to get changed into different outfits, it takes time to find a place to get changed and the new styling will also incur more time.

Thirdly, since flash photography requires frequent testing of light, it will definitely require more time.

Lastly, if the couple wishes to take photos at different spots of the location or even at different locations, much of the booked time will be spent on travelling.

You shouldn't be rushing through a couple shoot if both you and your partner aren't professional models. It also takes quite a bit of time for everyone, including the photographer, to warm up to each other.

Eventually, you should hire a photographer for a longer duration if you truly want to get some well-taken photos with good lighting and expression.
  4. Can we bring our pet to the photoshoot?
Yes, you can bring your pet to the photoshoot if you would like them to be included in the photos. However, please keep in mind that it can be challenging to work with animals, and it's important to let me know in advance so that I can prepare accordingly.
  5. How will the photos be delivered to us?
The photos will be delivered to you digitally, usually via a download link. You will be able to download the photos instantly once they are ready, and they can be downloaded anywhere with internet access.
  6. Will the photos be retouched?
Yes, the photos will be professionally edited and retouched accordingly to the package you opt for. Basic editing will include colour correction, brightness, and contrast adjustments, and advanced editing will include skin retouching.
  7. What should a couple wear for pictures?
Coordinating colours and styles can add visual interest to your photos and create a cohesive look. When choosing colours, consider the location and season of the photoshoot. For example, if you're having a photoshoot in nature, earthy tones will complement the natural surroundings. Comfortable clothing is important so that you can move and express yourself freely in front of the camera. Avoid clothing with bold patterns or logos as they can be distracting in photos. Think about the final outcome and the overall feel and atmosphere of the photos you want to achieve and choose an outfit that reflects that.
  8. What couples should not wear for pictures?
Bold patterns or logos can be distracting in photos and should be avoided. Clothing that is too tight or restrictive can make it difficult for you to move comfortably, which can make you look stiff in the photos. Avoid anything that you are not comfortable wearing, as it will show in the photos.
  9. Which outfit is best for photoshoot?
The best outfit for a photoshoot is one that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Coordinating colours and styles can create a cohesive look. Dress for the location and season, for example, if you're having a photoshoot in a park, you may want to wear something casual and comfortable. If you're having a photoshoot in a more formal setting, you may want to dress up a bit more. Think about the final outcome and the overall feel and atmosphere of the photos you want to achieve and choose an outfit that reflects that.
  10. What is the best colour to wear on picture day?
Neutral colours such as black, white, beige, navy blue, and grey tend to photograph well and are versatile for different occasions. Avoid bright or neon colours as they can be distracting in photos and can clash with the background. Neutral colours also tend to be timeless, which means that your photos will look great for years to come. However, it's also important to consider the location and season of the photoshoot, as certain colours may complement the natural surroundings or the festive atmosphere better.
  11. How do couples pose?
Couples can pose by standing or sitting close together, facing the camera or each other, and holding hands, or with arms around each other. A classic pose is to have one partner resting their head on the other's shoulder. You can also try different poses such as a romantic dip or a playful piggyback ride. Experiment with different angles and perspectives to get a variety of shots.
  12. How do I pose for pictures with my partner?
The key to posing for pictures with your partner is to relax and be natural. Try to mirror each other's body language and movements, as this can create a sense of intimacy and connection in the photos. Use props or different locations to change up the poses, for example, sitting on a bench or standing in front of a unique background. It's important to communicate with your partner and the photographer to get the best results.
