Behind the Scenes
As an on-location photographer, I often bring more equipment than I may eventually use because different locations and changing conditions can require different lighting setups. This can mean travelling with heavy bags, light stands, flashes or strobes and other equipment.
An assistant can make a considerable difference by helping to carry and look after equipment, set up lighting, move equipment between locations and keep light stands secure when working outdoors in windy conditions.
There are also situations where having a female assistant can be helpful when I am photographing female clients or models. I maintain a professional no-contact approach whenever possible and normally guide posing verbally. A female assistant may, with the client's permission, help with practical matters such as adjusting hair or clothing when the client would be more comfortable receiving assistance from another woman.
The assistant becomes part of the working environment, so personality and attitude matter to me. I want everyone involved in the photoshoot to be comfortable with one another and able to concentrate on creating good photographs.
You do not need to be a photographer or have previous assisting experience. If you are interested in photography, however, assisting can give you an opportunity to observe how an actual photoshoot is planned and carried out, including how equipment and professional lighting are used on location.
If this sounds suitable for you, please read through the responsibilities, expectations and criteria below before contacting me.
You can observe how a professional photoshoot works behind the scenes, including equipment preparation, lighting setup, location challenges and the adjustments that may be needed as a shoot progresses.
If you are interested in photography, I am happy to explain what I am doing when time and circumstances allow. Assisting is not a formal photography course, but it can provide useful practical exposure that is difficult to get simply by reading or watching tutorials.
You can gradually become familiar with equipment such as light stands, flashes, portable strobes, modifiers and other accessories used during my shoots.
There is no expectation that you will know how everything works from the beginning. For unfamiliar equipment or tasks, I will explain what I need you to do.
A finished photograph rarely shows how much work happened outside the frame. Assisting gives you a closer look at the practical side of photography - carrying equipment, finding suitable positions, dealing with changing light and weather, setting up lighting and solving unexpected problems on location.
Where appropriate, I may acknowledge assistants in the description of the published photo album or project. This depends on the nature of the assignment and whether the work is published.
When time, circumstances and the nature of the shoot allow, I may occasionally take photographs of assistants as well. This is not guaranteed and should not be the main reason for joining a shoot.
On-location photography can involve a substantial amount of equipment. My bags and lighting equipment can be heavy, particularly when several lighting options are required.
You may help share the load while travelling between locations and keep an eye on equipment while I am concentrating on the shoot. You should therefore be reasonably comfortable with carrying photography equipment and being on your feet for extended periods.
You may help with setting up, adjusting, moving and packing light stands, lighting equipment and other accessories. I will guide you if you are unfamiliar with the equipment.
As you gain experience, being able to anticipate what needs to be moved or prepared can make the photoshoot considerably more efficient.
I conduct many photoshoots outdoors, where wind can make light stands and modifiers unstable. An assistant may need to hold or monitor the equipment to prevent it from falling, damaging the equipment or creating a safety risk.
Safety comes before getting the photograph. If conditions become unsuitable, the lighting setup may need to be changed or packed away.
During a shoot, I may need help with simple tasks such as carrying an item, checking belongings, moving equipment or keeping the working area organised.
The exact responsibilities vary because every location and photoshoot is different.
I normally guide clients verbally and avoid unnecessary physical contact. When photographing a female client, there may occasionally be situations where she would prefer assistance from another woman, such as adjusting stray hair or checking clothing.
Any assistance involving the client should only be provided when appropriate and with her knowledge or permission. The client's privacy, personal space and comfort should always be respected.
Photography equipment can be expensive and some assignments involve moments that cannot simply be repeated. I need assistants who take the work, equipment and people involved seriously.
On-location shoots do not always go according to plan. Weather can change, locations can become crowded and equipment may need to be moved repeatedly. A calm and adaptable attitude is therefore important.
I prefer working collaboratively rather than constantly giving orders. Once you understand what is happening, simple initiative - such as noticing that equipment needs to be moved or that a light stand needs attention - can be extremely helpful.
You will not be expected to know what to do immediately. Initiative becomes more useful as you gain experience working with me.
Photography assisting can involve carrying equipment, walking between locations, standing for extended periods and working outdoors in Singapore's heat and humidity.
You do not need exceptional strength, but you should be comfortable helping with reasonable physical tasks and tell me whenever something is too heavy or unsafe for you to handle.
You may be present during personal photoshoots and occasionally hear or see information that is not intended for the public. Professional behaviour, discretion and respect for the client are essential.
You live in or near the west side of Singapore.
You drive and have access to a vehicle.
You have an interest in photography, lighting or creative work.
You have relevant skills such as makeup or hairstyling.
Many of the people I photograph are women, including clients and models in genres where wardrobe, styling and personal privacy can require additional sensitivity.
As a male photographer, I generally avoid unnecessary physical contact and use verbal direction for posing. There may nevertheless be occasions when a client wants help adjusting hair or clothing, or would simply be more comfortable having another woman present.
For this particular assisting role, I am therefore currently looking for female assistants. The purpose is to support the comfort and privacy of the women I photograph while also having someone who can assist with the practical photography work described above.
Being female does not automatically mean you should touch or adjust a client. Her personal space and boundaries must always be respected, and assistance should only be given when appropriate and with her knowledge or permission.
This is an occasional opportunity rather than a regular part-time schedule. I handle a limited number of photoshoots, and whether an assistant is needed depends on the assignment, location, equipment and available budget.
When a suitable project comes up, I may check whether you are available. You are free to accept or decline according to your own schedule, and there is no obligation to be available for every shoot.
The date, approximate duration, location and expected responsibilities will be discussed before you agree to join a shoot.
Whether an assisting opportunity is paid depends on the nature and budget of the project. Paid client assignments and unpaid creative collaborations are different, so any payment or arrangement will be discussed before you agree to participate.
Please do not treat this as a source of regular part-time employment. The opportunities are occasional and depend on the photography projects I am undertaking.
If you have read this page and think you would be suitable, feel free to contact me and introduce yourself.
You can tell me a little about yourself, your general availability, where in Singapore you are based, whether you have any photography or assisting experience, and why you are interested. Previous experience is welcome but not required.
There is no obligation on either side. We can first determine whether the arrangement would be comfortable and suitable before considering any future photoshoot.
