Why Skai is the Premium Choice for Cat Photography

When choosing a cat photographer, you're not just looking for someone with a camera—you want someone who truly understands and cares about your feline friend (or should I say, your boss).

Today, many people have phone cameras and plenty of hobbyists own high-end DSLRs. While lots of people can snap cute photos of cats, I aim to show why professional cat photographers can capture even better shots.

Here's what sets me apart from the rest:

  1. Patience and Understanding of Feline Behaviour:

Cats have their own minds and getting them to pose is like trying to herd… well, cats. My approach is rooted in patience and a deep understanding of feline behaviour, letting your cats take the lead in a calm environment where they can be themselves—no heavy bribery required (okay, maybe just a little). Years of experience with both cats and dogs have honed my ability to read an animal's mood and adapt accordingly. My "magic fingers" have a soothing touch that calms even the most nervous cats, helping them relax into the perfect pose.

  2. Flexibility in Location:

I offer on-location photography and can hold the cat photography session anywhere—even in your home. Should you require a clean backdrop, I can set up a makeshift studio right in your living room. Who says you can't have a professional photoshoot without leaving the house?

  3. Customised Approach:

Every cat is unique and so is every photoshoot I conduct. I tailor each session to fit your cat's personality, whether they're playful and full of energy or calm and contemplative. This personalised approach ensures that the photos are not just beautiful but truly representative of who your cat is—because let's be honest, your cat is special and they know it.

  4. Professional Equipment and Lighting:

Creating high-quality images requires more than just a good camera. My expertise in professional lighting and equipment allows me to produce clear, eye-catching photos that stand out. Whether it's capturing the shine in your cat's eye or the softness of their fur, I make sure every detail is perfect. After all, cats deserve the spotlight—literally.

  5. Genuine Love for Cats:

Finally, what truly sets me apart is my genuine love for cats. This isn't just a job for me; it's a passion. I see each cat as an individual with their own story and I'm committed to capturing that story in the most beautiful way possible. This love and dedication shine through in every photograph I take. And let's be honest, cats can sense authenticity from a mile away.

When you choose me as your cat photographer, you're choosing someone who will treat your cat with the same love and care that you do. Let's create something amazing together—because your cat deserves nothing less!

Reviews: Clients' Testimonials

pet portrait session

"Skai (@skaichanphotography) is a very respectable and professional photographer. His principle is to never touch any models, and he sticks to it even if it means the poses may take longer to do because sometimes its not easy to readjust my pose just based on verbal feedback. Despite that, he has been very patient, telling me what poses are flattering and what are not. He gives honest feedback throughout the shoot, and turns away whenever I had to readjust my pose, especially when I am potentially in compromising positions. He also takes great effort to adjust the lighting to ensure the most flattering angles are captured. Highly recommended photographer! I also hired him as my wedding photographer 3 years ago and his work didn't disappoint❤️❤️" - Rachel Liew

I invite you to take a moment to read the testimonials and reviews from my previous clients—kind people who've generously taken the time to recommend my photography services. Their words reflect the passion and dedication I bring to each session. Let their experiences guide you in choosing the right photographer for your beloved cat.

About: Skai the Cat Photographer

Professional cat photographer in Singapore Hi, I'm Skai, a cat photographer in Singapore, and if it weren't for cats, I might've lost my sanity around the year 2023. They saved my life, quite literally—curious? Well, let me explain.

Back when I was unwillingly renting a room, life was a bit of a cat-astrophe. I was navigating the minefield of housemates who seemed to have degrees in criticism that I often wondered if they were secretly part-time food critics. They were nice and upfront, except for a "dangerous" backstabber, who constantly tried to maximise his gains. I didn't want to put my wife in a difficult situation by letting our frustrations show, so I kept quiet, bottling up the stress. And to top it all off, juggling my photography work with travelling around Singapore and lugging heavy and bulky equipment, was draining the last bits of my patience.

But here's where the plot twist comes in—cats. Every time I passed by the neighbouring blocks, I found myself surrounded by strays and pet cats, each with their personality and quirks. These felines were my free therapists. With every purr and nuzzle, they made me forget the noise of the world, at least for a moment.

I'd always dreamt of setting up a home studio to create stunning cat portraits, but back then, it was as elusive as a cat in a room full of cucumbers. My situation didn't allow for the luxury of space and my dream of doing studio photography for cats remained just that—a dream.

However, there's a silver lining—I've always had a knack for understanding animals, especially cats. With years of experience with animals like dogs and what I'd like to call a born talent, I can communicate with cats in a way that most can't. And, of course, I have what my wife affectionately calls "magic fingers". I've got the massage techniques that make cats doze off in no time, turning even the most skittish of kitties into relaxed models.

Finally, when my own home became a reality, with unwavering support from my sweet soulmate (who deserves a medal for putting up with my endless cat-talk), I was able to start focusing more on cat photography. It was like getting nine lives all over again. Now, instead of just focusing on photographing people, I'm here to create beautiful memories for all the cat owners out there.

I'm ready to rock and roll and more importantly, I'm ready to capture the essence of your feline friends, turning their unique personalities into timeless pieces of art.

Skai's Goals & Vision for Cat Photography

My vision for cat photography is all about creating stunning images that not only charm the world but also make it a better place. I believe capturing the unique essence of each cat brings joy and a touch of magic to everyday life. Cats, as beloved members of our families, deserve to have their memories preserved in the most beautiful way possible. Sadly, cats often live shorter lives than humans, thus these photos become treasured keepsakes for their owners.

I'm also passionate about using my work to foster a deeper understanding of cats, especially stray cats. By highlighting their true personalities and quirks, I hope to bridge gaps in understanding and reduce conflicts between cat feeders and the public. Appreciating the beauty and complexity of these animals can lead to more harmonious interactions and a greater respect for their place in our communities.

Additionally, I am dedicated to promoting the Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage ("TNRM") programme for managing community cats. This humane method helps control the stray cat population and prevents issues like noise and other disturbances in residential areas. By advocating for this practice, I aim to contribute to a balanced and compassionate approach to managing community cats, reducing the need for culling due to complaints.

How Skai Began Doing Cat Photography

My journey into cat photography began with a deep love for animals, largely because they're often cuter and less complicated than humans—no need to negotiate over dinner plans with them. Growing up in a family that showed kindness to strays, I frequently spent time playing with local cats whenever I encountered them. The less timid strays would brush up against me as if inviting me to be their new best friend.

Initially, I used my phone to snap casual shots of these feline companions just for memories. My main focus was on human portraits, which, let's face it, can be as tricky as herding cats—pun intended. With human portraits demanding all my attention, my cat photography services were, unfortunately, left to gather dust.

However, my frequent visits to homes for personal gatherings, portrait sessions and interior photography provided ample chances to capture some adorable cats. Slowly but surely, I carved out time from my busy schedule to showcase my past cat photography projects and make an attempt to reach out to potential clients—because who can resist the charm of a cat photo?

While renting a room, I was tempted to photograph the multitude of stray cats in my neighbourhood, but, alas, my circumstances were less than ideal. I longed for the space to set up a home studio for professional shoots—because capturing the purr-fect shot requires more than just a good angle. When I finally moved into my own house in 2024, I began interacting with two stray cats in my estate. Unfortunately, unforeseen challenges and a bit of bad luck prevented me from executing professional shoots with them. This frustration spurred me to channel my focus into attracting clients who wanted to capture their beloved cats—after all, every cat deserves a close-up.

Why Skai Loves Cat Photography

My love for animals, especially dogs and cats, is at the heart of why I cherish cat photography. Cats are naturally beautiful and this beauty translates into stunning photographs that can brighten anyone's day—no filter needed. I aim to make the world a more beautiful place, one whisker at a time.

Cats have a calming effect on me, especially during tough times. Their straightforward, uncomplicated nature offers a refreshing contrast to the maze of human emotions. It's like therapy but with more purring and fewer awkward silences. Unlike some people who might take your kind words or intentions as offence, or take your kindness for granted, cats are blissfully direct and genuinely affectionate. They have no agenda—unless you count getting more treats.

Through cat photography, I can share the joy these animals bring with others, helping people appreciate and understand them better. This not only supports stray cats and their feeders but also fosters a more harmonious community—because who could argue with a face like that?

How Doing Cat Photography has Helped Skai Grow

Working with cats has made me a happier person. Their calming presence helps me forget my troubles and reset my mood, providing a brief but vital escape from life's stresses.

I've had the pleasure of meeting many fellow cat lovers and owners. While not every interaction is perfect, I've found that most are genuinely kind and welcoming. Cat photography has also taught me patience and offered a new perspective on photography. Capturing cats is a different challenge compared to human portraits, pushing me to become a better photographer.

Expanding into cat photography has enriched my portfolio, adding variety and excitement to my work. I've enjoyed collaborating with cat owners to create artistic and meaningful portraits, and their trust and cooperation have made the experience incredibly rewarding.

Skai's Regrets

When I was living in the Taman Jurong estate, I always had this idea to roam around and capture the local cats in their natural environment—just for keepsakes. It was one of those plans that felt like it could wait, especially with my busy schedule. But life moves fast. I moved out and now finding the time to head back feels like a distant dream. It's strange how something so simple, like a little photoshoot around the neighbourhood, can slip through your fingers.

After I moved into my first home, two stray cats regularly hung out near my block. They were friendly and I spent some time getting to know them. I even had plans to do a proper, professional photoshoot with these newfound companions—something special. But then, a few residents started raising concerns about the cats being a disturbance. I thought I'd jump in and find a middle ground before things escalated, so I set up a group chat with the feeders and residents who were fond of the cats.

Unfortunately, things moved quicker than I expected. In the blink of an eye, the group had organised for the cats to be sterilised and fostered, which was great for them—but my chance to do that photoshoot? Gone. The cats were in good hands, yes, but I couldn't help but feel like I'd missed my moment.

Understanding Cat Photography

Cat photography is an art form that requires not just technical skill but also a deep understanding of feline behaviour. It's about capturing the essence of a cat, whether it's through a playful action shot or a serene portrait.

Why are Cat Photographers Important?

A professional cat photographer knows how to bring out the best in your cat, capturing moments that are both fleeting and precious. These photos are not just pictures but memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime.

The Challenges of Cat Photography and How We Overcome Them

Cat photography isn't as easy as it seems—it comes with its own set of challenges, requiring patience, a bit of know-how and a touch of creativity. By understanding these challenges, you'll have a better sense of the work that goes into capturing the perfect shot of your feline friend—and how we tackle these challenges together.

  1. Unpredictable Behaviour:

Cats are famously independent and unpredictable. One moment they're all cuddles and purrs, the next, they're off doing their own thing. It's like trying to predict the weather in Singapore—good luck with that! To deal with this, I go with the flow, letting your cat call the shots. I create a relaxed environment where your cat feels at ease, which naturally brings out his best side.

  2. Sensitivity to Surroundings:

Cats are creatures of habit and new places or unfamiliar people can make them a bit jittery. To keep things calm, I usually suggest having the session in a familiar setting, like your home or my cat-friendly studio (no open windows—don't worry!). I also take the time to let your cat get comfortable with me around, making sure he feels safe and secure.

  3. Limited Attention Span:

Cats aren't known for their long attention spans—think of it as the feline version of a child in a candy store. Keeping them engaged can be a bit of a challenge. To keep their interest, I mix things up, using their favourite toys or treats as little bribes (no shame in that game!). Short, fun breaks help keep the vibe light and stress-free.

  4. Capturing Personality:

Every cat has a unique personality and capturing that on camera takes a bit of patience and a lot of observation. I like to spend some time getting to know your cat's quirks and habits before the shoot, so I can catch those moments that truly reflect who he is. It's like trying to capture the essence of a cat's soul—if only he'd sit still for a second!

  5. Lighting and Movement:

Cats move fast and unpredictably, which can make getting a clear, well-lit shot a bit tricky. With years of experience in lighting, I know how to adapt to these challenges. I use lighting techniques that flatter your cat's features while making sure they're comfortable—because let's face it, nobody likes being under harsh lights, not even a cat.

  6. Shy or Nervous Personality:

For cats that are naturally shy or a bit on the nervous side, a photoshoot can feel overwhelming. I approach these situations with extra care, using calming techniques and giving your cat plenty of time to explore the space and get used to me. Patience is key here and I'm in no rush—building trust with your cat is my top priority.

  7. Handling Props and Themes:

When it comes to themed or creative shoots, getting a cat to cooperate with props can be... interesting. Cats are natural minimalists—they prefer things simple unless there's a cardboard box involved! I keep props minimal and non-intrusive, making sure they feel natural for your cat. This way, the session stays fun and relaxed, and we still get those stunning shots.

By understanding these challenges, you'll see the dedication and care that goes into every cat photography session. My aim isn't just to overcome these hurdles but to turn them into opportunities for creating truly special and memorable images of your feline companion.

Should I Hire a Professional Cat Photographer?

Deciding whether to hire a professional cat photographer or take your own photos can be a bit like choosing between a gourmet meal and a fast-food burger. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons to help you decide which option suits you best.

Hiring a Professional Cat Photographer: Pros and Cons

    Pros:
  1. Expertise in Capturing the Perfect Shot:

Professionals know how to handle your cat's mood swings, from playful to aloof. It's like trying to catch a shooting star—but with fur.

  2. High-Quality, Professional Images:

With fancy equipment and techniques, professionals create photos that are sharp, well-lit, and look like they belong in a gallery.

  3. Stress-Free Experience:

Professionals manage all the technical stuff and work to make your cat feel at ease. Less stress for you and your cat, more time to enjoy those purrs.

  4. Creative Concepts and Themes:

They offer imaginative ideas and themes, turning your cat into a model or even a movie star. It's like giving your cat a starring role without the Hollywood price tag.

  5. Lasting Keepsakes:

These high-quality images become treasured memories, as permanent as your cat's attempts to knock things off the table.

    Cons:
  1. Cost:

Professional sessions can be expensive. It's a bit like paying for a high-end dinner when you could just have takeout.

  2. Scheduling Challenges:

Finding a time that works for everyone—photographer, you, and your cat—can be as tricky as herding cats. Oh wait, that's literally what you're doing!

  3. Less Spontaneity:

Professional shoots are planned and posed, so you might miss out on those spontaneous, everyday cat antics.

Taking Casual Shots Yourself: Pros and Cons

    Pros:
  1. Cost-Free:

No need to spend money—just grab your smartphone or camera. It's the budget-friendly option, like making a meal from whatever's left in your fridge.

  2. Flexible and Convenient:

You can take photos whenever you want, capturing those unexpected moments when your cat decides to be adorable (or mischievous).

  3. Personal and Intimate Moments:

Casual shots can capture your cat's daily quirks and unique personality. It's like getting a glimpse into their secret life—minus the spy camera.

  4. Learning Opportunity:

Taking your own photos lets you practice and improve your photography skills. It's a bit like being your own art teacher, minus the grades.

    Cons:
  1. Limited Quality:

Unless you're a photography wizard with a high-end camera, your photos might not have the crispness and detail of a professional's work.

  2. Inconsistent Results:

Getting a good shot can be a gamble, especially with cats who think standing still is a waste of their time.

  3. Lack of Professional Touch:

Without professional editing and artistic flair, your photos might lack that extra polish. It's like serving a home-cooked meal without the gourmet presentation.

  4. Time-Consuming:

Capturing the perfect photo on your own can take a lot of effort. Think of it as a marathon with your cat as the uncooperative running partner.

Making Your Decision:

When deciding between a professional photographer and DIY photos, consider:

  1. Your Budget:

Can you afford a professional session, or would you rather save your money for something else—like more cat toys?

  2. Your Desired Outcome:

Are you after high-quality, artistic photos or are casual snapshots good enough for you?

  3. Your Cat's Comfort:

Would your cat handle a professional session well, or do they prefer lounging in their own space without the presence of a camera?

Choosing the right option depends on your needs and what you hope to achieve. Whether you go for a professional touch or DIY shots, the goal is to capture the special bond you share with your cat. After all, a photo of your feline friend is worth a thousand purrs.

FAQ

General Questions

What makes your cat photography different from others?

What's included in your cat photography session?

A typical session includes a pre-shoot consultation, the photography session itself, professional editing, and a selection of high-resolution images delivered via a secure web link.

How much does a typical cat photography session cost?

Prices vary based on the session's length, location, and specific requirements. I believe in fair pricing and offer packages to fit different budgets. You can find detailed pricing information on this page.

Location and Timing

Where do the photo sessions take place?

I offer on-location photography, meaning I can come to your home or any preferred location. I can also set up a makeshift studio in your home if a clean backdrop is desired. Alternatively, we can use my home studio.

Can the photoshoot be done outdoors?

Yes, outdoor shoots are possible if your cat is comfortable in that setting, though it's quite rare for cats to be at ease outdoors. We can discuss suitable locations and ensure a safe environment for your cat.

How do you choose the best time for the session?

I recommend scheduling sessions during times when your cat is usually relaxed and less likely to be stressed. Morning or late afternoon light can also be ideal for natural lighting.

How long does a typical cat photography session last?

My minimum cat photography session lasts 90 minutes, allowing time for everyone to warm up. The actual time required depends on your cat's mood and the types of shots we're aiming for. I'm flexible and can extend the time if needed.

Do you travel outside Singapore for cat photography sessions?

No. Currently, I work exclusively within Singapore.

Is there a specific season that's best for cat photography?

Cat photography can be done year-round. However, if you're looking for outdoor shots, certain seasons might offer better lighting or scenery.

Do you charge extra for sessions outside your usual service area?

Generally, no. However, for locations that are difficult to reach via public transport in Singapore, there may be an additional travel fee. We can discuss this during the consultation.

Can you accommodate last-minute bookings?

I try to be as flexible as possible, but my schedule can fill up quickly. It's best to book in advance, but if you need a last-minute session, I'll do my best to accommodate you. However, there may be extra charges.

How do I prepare my home for a cat photography session?

Make sure the area is clean and free of clutter. If we're using a backdrop, we'll need enough space to set it up. Keep your cat's favourite toys and treats nearby to help them feel at ease.

Style and Creativity

What is your photography style?

I focus on capturing the true essence of your cat, aiming to create timeless images that are both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. I prefer a clean background and I love making my subjects, your cat for this case, the focus on the shoot.

Can I suggest specific poses or themes for the shoot?

Absolutely! I'm open to your ideas and love collaborating with clients to create something unique. No cat abuse, please! Let's discuss your vision and bring it to life.

Do you offer themed or seasonal photoshoots?

Yes, I offer themed sessions and can assist you in creating a customised setup to match the occasion.

How do you capture a cat's personality in a photo?

By observing your cat's natural behaviour and interacting with them in a relaxed environment, I can capture their unique quirks and expressions. Patience is key, and I allow your cat to lead the session.

Can I include props or outfits in the photos?

Yes, you're welcome to include props or outfits. Just ensure they're comfortable for your cat. We can discuss how to incorporate them creatively into the session.

Do you offer black-and-white photography options?

Yes, I offer both colour and black-and-white photography. Black-and-white images can add a classic and timeless feel to the photos. I still shoot in colour and convert them afterward.

How do you ensure the photos are unique and not generic?

I tailor each session to your cat's personality and your preferences. By focusing on what makes your cat special, I create images that are as unique as they are.

What if I want a specific editing style?

Every photographer has their own style and may not be able to replicate another photographer's work. We can discuss your desired look during the consultation to ensure the final images match your vision as closely as possible.

Do you offer photography for special cat-related events?

Yes, I can cover special events like cat shows, adoption days, or any other cat-related gatherings. Let's talk about your event and how I can help capture the moments.

How do you deal with cats that are not photogenic?

Every cat has its own charm, and I believe there's no such thing as a non-photogenic cat. With the right angles, lighting, and patience, I can bring out the best in every feline.

Technical and Logistical Details

What equipment do you use for cat photography?

I use full-frame DSLR cameras and professional lighting equipment to ensure high-quality images. My gear is versatile, allowing me to adapt to different environments and lighting conditions.

How do you handle the editing process?

I go through the photos multiple times over several days, taking breaks to ensure I'm always making the best decisions with a fresh mind.

Can I get the raw photos from the session?

No, I don't provide raw photos. I typically provide edited high-resolution images in JPG format, representing the best quality of my work. If you believe you can do better post-production work, it may be best to take the photos yourself.

How do you deliver the final photos?

The final photos are delivered via a secure web link, allowing you to download them easily. This method is efficient and eco-friendly, aligning with my commitment to sustainability.

Do you offer prints or albums of the photos?

No, I'm focusing on making money through photography, not through sales.

How do you ensure the safety of my cat during the session?

Your cat's safety is my top priority. I create a secure and stress-free environment and never force your cat into uncomfortable situations. I'm always mindful of their well-being throughout the session.

Do you provide lighting, or do I need to prepare anything?

I provide all necessary lighting equipment, which is professional-grade and designed to flatter your cat. You don't need to prepare anything in this regard.

How many photos will I receive from the session?

The number of photos depends on the package you choose. Generally, you'll receive a selection of carefully curated and edited images that represent the best moments from the session. You can opt for additional photos at an extra cost.

Do you offer retouching or special effects?

Yes, I offer retouching upon request. We can discuss the level of editing you'd like to achieve the desired outcome. For pet photography, I usually advise keeping them natural. No human is perfect, and neither are cats.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel the session?

I understand that plans can change. I have a flexible rescheduling policy, but I do ask for notice as early as possible. I don't do any refund of the deposit because it's used to compensate me for the time I have spent in discussion, planning and possible delaying of replying to other enquiries.
