Fitness Editorial Photoshoot with Urban Active Fitness
The discussion part for this fitness gym editorial photoshoot was stressful even though Isabelle actually did most of the job. At the start, I knew she would be one of the best clients ever. Her preparation work and the words that she used simply spoke well of her high EQ. Thus, I was determined to work with her.
The most challenging part for me was that I could not shoot in my usual 3:2 or 2:3 ratio for the photo dimension. Their request was actually to get images of ratio 1:1, 3:4 and 3.4:1, which was a nightmare. What's even more challenging was that the 3.4:1 images are supposed to be able to be cropped towards 16:9. I supposed the composition wouldn't be the best.
From the pictures of the gym and my knowledge of shophouses, I knew we didn't have the luxury of space for an ultra wide angle shoot. Eventually, I decided to meet up with Isabelle for to scout the gym. Then, I physically demonstrated the space restriction to her. Fortunately, she was very understanding and eventually decided not to pursue the 3.4:1 resolution.
The goal was to get high key pictures to present a clean image. I also had to take into consideration that there would be some movements. Thus, I had to design the lighting well by playing with the settings of my camera and the lighting. Since there would be individual and group shots, it made lighting more tedious.
It was a great but absolute exhausting day. To begin with, I had to climb with my bulky and heavy bag full of equipment up to the third storey where the gym was located. I set up two lighting and ended up with a third one, and I was able to utilise the white walls and ceiling. I was expecting them to shift the shooting locations within the gym but I didn't anticipate that it would be so hectic.
Basically, I shifted my lighting equipment many times and it was a pain working with huge softboxes that had to go through the door. Moreover, they also switched between solo and group shots a few times and I had to change the positions of the lighting and the type of light modifiers. We were also racing against time because there were too many scenes to be captured. I didn't manage to get a perfect exposure for them but it was good enough to reduce post-processing job.
Fortunately, Jovin and Isabelle were very good in directing the trainers. It turned out to be a very good shoot. I knew I could do it much better but I had done my best given all the limitations.
