How Skai Began Doing On-Location Photography

My on-location photography adventure kicked off right alongside my entry into the world of portrait photography, around the year 2012. Thanks to a seasoned photographer friend, I got the lowdown on the critical role of lighting. That enlightenment sparked a serious mission for me – mastering flash photography. I aimed to create top-notch photos anywhere, anytime.

Here's where fate dealt its hand – or hands, in this case. The lack of capital meant no traditional photography studio for me. A blessing in disguise? You bet. It pushed me towards on-location photography. I channelled whatever resources I had into upgrading my equipment and skills, tackling lighting challenges head-on for a variety of outdoor and indoor projects.

Yet, challenges kept popping up. Beyond the scenic outdoors, one of my first on-location projects unfolded in a friend's house and then a hotel room. They highlighted the struggle to achieve the low-key lighting effect that I visualised. Did I get discouraged? Nope. Instead, I used it as fuel for growth.

More equipment, more practice – that became my mantra. It led me to a point where I could expertly manipulate light to get any effect I wanted. This journey is a testament to my dedication to mastering the art of on-location photography, turning every setting into a canvas for visual storytelling.

Now, equipped with an arsenal of lighting gear, I confidently bring my on-location photography game to various settings – offices, homes, hotels, you name it. I can even set up an on-location makeshift studio at any indoor location, given sufficient space.

Why Skai Loves Doing On-Location Photography

On-location photography isn't just a job for me; it's a love affair. Let me spill the beans on why I'm head over heels for it:

  1. Limitless Variety: The types of locations are as limitless as the horizon. Every shoot is a new adventure, a different story waiting to unfold. The diversity keeps things interesting and I get to craft captivating photos against unique backdrops. It's like a playground for my passion, constantly fuelling my love for photography.
  2. Exploring Singapore's Beauty: I'm enamoured with exploring different places in Singapore. Whether it's the vibrant streets or the serene interiors, each location has its charm. It's not just about capturing moments; it's about embracing the beauty of diverse settings, from bustling cityscapes to enchanting interiors.
  3. Mastering the Art of Lighting: Some locations demand a touch of professional lighting wizardry and I thrive on that challenge. It's not just about clicking a button; it's about sculpting light to create high-quality photos. Knowing that I can bring out the best in a setting, especially when professional lighting is essential, fills me with pride. It's a unique advantage over those who solely rely on natural light.
  4. A Prideful Advantage: On-location photography isn't just a skill; it's a badge of pride. Knowing that I can do what others might struggle with, and perhaps even do it better, is a confidence booster. It's not about competition; it's about elevating the craft and showcasing the possibilities that professional lighting brings to the table.
  5. Endless Opportunities: On-location photography isn't a job; it's a doorway to endless opportunities. Each project is a chance to do what I love – photography. The variety of locations opens up a spectrum of projects, allowing me to immerse myself in capturing moments that bring joy and fulfilment.

In a nutshell, on-location photography is not just my profession; it's my passion, my pride and my ticket to endless creative possibilities. Each click tells a unique story, and I'm here to bring those stories to life.

Understanding On-Location Photography

What is On-Location Photography?

On-location photography refers to a photographic practice wherein the capturing of images takes place in a setting chosen by the subject or client, rather than within the confines of a studio. In this approach, the photographer brings his equipment to a specified location, be it an indoor or outdoor environment, tailoring the shoot to the unique characteristics of the chosen backdrop.

This method offers a departure from traditional studio settings, providing versatility and a more natural, contextual feel to the images.

What is On-Location Photography also Known as?

On-location photography is known by several synonymous terms, including location photography, environmental portraiture and on-site photography. These terms are often used interchangeably to describe the practice of capturing images in settings chosen by the subject or client, moving beyond the confines of a traditional studio.

What is an On-Location Photographer?

An on-location photographer is a photographer who takes photographs on location, rather than in a studio. On-location photographers may work in a variety of settings, including outdoors, in homes or businesses, or at events. On-location photographers often specialise in a particular type of photography, such as portrait, event, or commercial photography.

On-location photographers may work with natural light or use additional lighting equipment to achieve the desired effect. They may also use a variety of cameras, lenses and other equipment to capture high-quality photographs. On-location photographers often work on a freelance basis and may be hired by businesses, individuals or organisations to document events, create marketing materials, or create personal portraits.

Why Choose On-Location Photography?

The applications of on-location photography are diverse and adaptable to various needs. It is frequently employed in portrait sessions, allowing individuals to be photographed in settings that hold personal significance or convey a particular mood.

Additionally, on-location photography finds widespread use in corporate settings, facilitating professional headshots against office or workplace backgrounds. The flexibility of this approach extends to event coverage and lifestyle shoots, providing a dynamic and tailored visual narrative.

Goals of On-Location Photography

The primary goals of on-location photography centre around the contextualisation of subjects within their chosen settings. By capturing individuals or objects within familiar or chosen environments, the photographer aims to convey a deeper, more authentic narrative.

This method seeks to evoke a sense of connection between the subject and their surroundings, resulting in images that resonate with a distinct, personalised quality.

Additionally, on-location photography strives to leverage the unique characteristics of each setting, harnessing the interplay of light, space and atmosphere to enhance the visual impact of the captured images.

Should I Hire a Professional On-Location Photographer?

Whether or not you should hire a professional on-location photographer depends on your needs and goals for the photoshoot. Here are a few reasons why you might consider hiring a professional on-location photographer:

  1. High-quality results: Professional photographers have the training, experience and equipment to produce high-quality photographs that meet professional standards. If you are looking for professional-grade results, hiring a professional photographer may be the best option.
  2. Expertise and creativity: Professional photographers bring a level of expertise and creativity to the photoshoot that can help you achieve the desired outcome. They can offer guidance on lighting, composition and posing to help create visually appealing photographs.
  3. Time and convenience: Hiring a professional photographer can save you time and hassle by taking care of all the details of the photoshoot. This can be particularly useful if you are busy or don't have the expertise or equipment to take professional-grade photographs yourself.
  4. Professional service: Professional photographers typically provide a high level of customer service, including consultation and communication before and after the photoshoot, as well as editing and retouching of the final images.

If you are considering hiring a professional on-location photographer, it's a good idea to do your research and choose a photographer who has a good reputation and a portfolio that reflects your style and needs. You may also want to discuss your expectations and budget with the photographer before booking the photoshoot to ensure that you are both on the same page.

Ultimately, whether or not to hire a professional on-location photographer is a personal decision that depends on your specific needs and goals. If you are looking for high-quality, professional-grade photographs and are willing to invest in the expertise and convenience of a professional photographer, then hiring a professional on-location photographer may be the right choice for you.

Does the Photographer Choose Location?

It depends on the situation. In some cases, the photographer may choose the location, while in other cases, the location may be chosen by the client or determined by the purpose of the photoshoot. Here are a few factors that can influence who chooses the location for a photoshoot:

  1. The purpose of the photoshoot: If the photoshoot is for commercial purposes, such as advertising or marketing, the location may be chosen by the client to showcase their products or services in a particular environment. On the other hand, if the photoshoot is for personal or editorial purposes, the photographer may have more flexibility to choose the location based on their vision and style.
  2. The photographer's expertise: The photographer may choose the location based on their expertise and the type of photography they specialise in. For example, a landscape photographer may choose a location that offers beautiful natural surroundings, while a portrait photographer may choose a location with good lighting and a variety of backdrops.
  3. The client's preferences: The client may have specific preferences or requirements for the location of the photoshoot. For example, they may want the photoshoot to take place at their business, in their home or at a particular event.

Overall, the question of who chooses the location for a photoshoot can depend on a variety of factors, and it's important for the photographer and the client to communicate and come to an agreement on the location that best meets their needs and expectations.

Is This Location Too Dark for Photoshoot?

"Is this place too dark/ dim for photoshoot?"

This is one common question I have been asked by clients and friends who are very concerned about the quality of their photographs.

The cause of this concern is mainly due to the lack of understanding of professional photography. Most people don't realise that photography isn't just about the clicking of the shutter button but it's also about solving each lighting situation.

A happy fact is that professional photographers can take good photographs at any place, given that setting up of professional lighting is allowed. It can be a dim indoor place or even outdoors at night.

Of course, photography with flash (high-end photography) is more costly due to the additional bulky, expensive and heavy equipment, and the effort to prepare, transport and assemble them.

How to Take Pictures with Location?

✔️ background well-exposed

❌ background over-exposed

Off-Cam flash photography

✔️ Faces well-exposed,
✔️ no bad shadows on faces,
✔️ background well-exposed

You see nice scenery at an outdoor location and you want to get a portrait shot with it as the background.

In some situations when you're lucky, the shot kind of works. This happens when the natural light is soft, the angle is right and you're at a good spot.

Oftentimes, it's either the background is overexposed that it appears white with most of the details lost or your face appears dark (in the shadow). In both situations, the photographs are wasted.

Most of the time, this happens when you are doing a portrait with the sky.

The solution to this problem is high-end photography, which allows the professional photographer to lower down the exposure of the entire scene and use flash to light up your face (and body). This will balance the overall exposure.

To take it to another level, a good professional photographer will try to create soft light in order to flatter you.

On-Location Photography Setup

The setup for on-location photography varies, depending on the requirement and conditions of the shooting location.

On-Location Photography Without Flash

For a casual on-location photoshoot, it's usually quick and easy with the use of natural light as the main source of light. The photographer may begin by cleaning his camera lens and attaching the accessories, such as the camera strap.

On-Location Photography With Flash

On-location photoshoots with flash (high-end photography) will take much longer time. The photographer has to set up the photography lighting equipment by fixing up the strobe, light stand and light modifier. Each set of lights may take five to 15 minutes, depending on the design of the equipment. Moreover, there will be additional testing of the settings of the camera and each set of lights.

Conclusion

In conclusion, on-location photography isn't just about capturing moments; it's a journey of storytelling against diverse backdrops. The limitless variety, the exploration of beautiful places, and the mastery of lighting nuances – these elements collectively contribute to creating a visual narrative that resonates with the heart. As you embark on your on-location photoshoot, consider setting goals beyond mere pictures. Aim to encapsulate the essence of the location, to weave a story that reflects the uniqueness of the moment and place.

Understanding the significance of professional lighting, especially in certain settings, opens up avenues to achieve a level of quality that transcends the ordinary. It's not about creating images; it's about crafting memories that stand the test of time, illuminated by the artistry of light.

So, dear reader, as you venture into the world of on-location photography, set goals that go beyond the obvious. Strive to encapsulate the soul of the location, infuse meaning into each frame and let the unique atmosphere paint your visual narrative. Embrace the possibilities that professional lighting offers, allowing your photos to tell a story that goes beyond words.

Now, if you're pondering the idea of an on-location photoshoot and need a helping hand, consider seeking a photographer who not only understands the technicalities but also shares your passion for storytelling. Someone who can transform your vision into a visual tale, making the entire process seamless and enjoyable. If this resonates with your aspirations, you might want to explore the possibilities with a seasoned on-location photographer who values not just the craft but the story behind every click. If you find yourself intrigued, perhaps we could chat about your vision and see how we can make it a reality. After all, creating visual stories is not just a profession for some; it's a shared journey of passion and creativity.
