25 Ways to Identify Fake Dating App Accounts

Introduction

As a dating profile photographer, I help people present their best and most authentic selves online. But beyond just looking good in photos, staying safe while navigating dating apps is equally important. This guide is for my clients and all visitors who appreciate what I do.

In addition to my work, I'm also an experienced dating app user. Over the years, I've encountered my fair share of weird profiles, suspicious matches and outright scammers. If you've been using dating apps for a while, you probably have it too. The truth is, we can't completely avoid scammers—they'll always exist. But rather than fear them, we can embrace the challenge and use these experiences to become smarter and better at spotting red flags.

Instead of giving up on dating apps, let's empower ourselves with knowledge. By learning to identify these scams, we can protect ourselves and ensure we don't fall victim to their tricks.

Scammer Checklists

Suspicious Profile Characteristics

Scammers often create profiles that seem too perfect or lack essential details. Watch out for these signs:

  1. Too Good to Be True:
If their profile pictures look like professional model shots, they might be stolen images.
  2. Limited Profile Information:
They provide vague details, few photos and little personal information.
  3. Stock-Like or Stolen Photos:
Reverse image search their profile pictures to check if they appear elsewhere online.
  4. No Social Media Presence:
Most real people have some online footprint; scammers often don't. Check for their Instagram or Facebook accounts.
  5. Strange Work Profiles:
They claim to have vague, high-status jobs such as "international businessman" or "military officer on a secret mission".

Unusual Behaviour & Communication Patterns

Some scammers use strange or exaggerated communication tactics to manipulate you:

  1. Unusual Language or Grammar:
Poor grammar, odd phrasing or overly formal language could indicate a scammer using translation tools.
  2. Overly Polished Responses:
Their messages seem scripted or copied and pasted.
  3. Excessive Compliments or Pet Names:
Over-the-top flattery like "my love", "my queen" or "soulmate" early on can be a manipulation tactic.
  4. Love Bombing:
They express intense emotions way too quickly to build trust.
  5. Rushed Relationship:
They push for commitment or marriage even before meeting in person.

Avoiding Real-Life Interaction

Scammers often find excuses to avoid meeting or proving their identity:

  1. Quick to Move Off the App:
They ask to switch to WhatsApp, Telegram or another messaging platform too soon.
  2. Avoiding Video Chats:
They refuse video calls or cancel last minute, making excuses.
  3. Always Travelling or Far Away:
They claim to be in another country or constantly travelling, making meeting up impossible.
  4. Refusal to Meet in Public:
They make excuses whenever you suggest meeting in a safe, public space.

Financial & Scam Tactics

Many scammers try to manipulate you into giving them money. Look out for these red flags:

  1. Asking for Money:
They create elaborate sob stories to ask for financial help.
  2. Emergency Situations:
They suddenly have a crisis that requires urgent financial assistance.
  3. Too Many Sob Stories:
They constantly share sad or tragic stories to evoke sympathy and make you feel obligated to help.
  4. Cryptocurrency & Investment Scams:
They introduce a "great investment opportunity" and try to convince you to send money.

Security & Identity Red Flags

Some scammers use tactics to bypass app security and steal information:

  1. Inconsistent Stories:
They change details about their life or background frequently.
  2. Prominent Contact Information:
They openly share phone numbers or emails, trying to avoid app security measures.
  3. Suspicious Links:
They send external links leading to phishing sites or adult content to steal your data.
  4. Fake Verification Requests:
They ask you to "verify" your identity by sending personal details or clicking a link.
  5. Multiple Profiles with Different Names:
They create several profiles with slightly different details and images.

Strange Profile Activity

Scammers don't behave like genuine users. These behaviours should raise concerns:

  1. Overly Private or Secretive:
They refuse to share personal details about work, family or daily life.
  2. Profile Activity Gaps:
They disappear for long periods and then suddenly return with excuses like "lost my phone" or "had an emergency".

How to Avoid Falling into Scams

I was fortunate because of my unique situation, which I will explain here. While using dating apps, I managed to avoid falling for scams and I hope that by sharing my experience, more people will become aware and stay safe.

Ways to stay safe:

  1. I didn't plan for any relationships:

I know it might sound unusual, but I used dating apps mainly to make new friends and find potential models to build my photography portfolio or create interesting work.

  2. I wasn't desperate:

I wasn't looking for any hook-ups. I took my time getting to know new friends and avoided anyone who pushed for instant commitment. Scammers eventually gave up on me.

  3. I was realistic:

I knew that things that seemed too good to be true usually weren't real. One of the most interesting encounters was when a scammer started playing a video of a lady stripping right after we started the video call. This happened a few times.

  4. I was busy:

With my photography projects keeping me occupied, I didn't have much free time and energy to entertain everyone. My replies could be slow and while this did turn off some potential friends, it also deterred some scammers, who likely turned to other more potential victims.

  5. I educated myself:

I read about scam stories and common tactics, making me less likely to fall for them. As an IT graduate, I knew many scam methods and thus avoided them, especially those that involved websites.

  6. I trusted my instincts:

Whenever a profile felt off, I followed my gut feeling and avoided further interaction.

  7. I checked for inconsistencies:

I always looked for mismatched details in conversations to spot red flags.

  8. I verified profiles:

I utilised my observation skills and patience. If I wanted to develop a friendship, I would spend time to find out more about them. I would try to request a video chat to confirm if they were real people.

By following these steps, I successfully navigated dating apps without falling victim to scammers. If you stay informed, trust your instincts and take things slow, you can avoid scams too.

Reasons Why People Create Fake Dating App Profiles

There are many reasons why people create fake dating app profiles. Some are in it for financial gain, others for manipulation and a few just for the fun of it. Here are some of the most common motives:

  1. Scammers:

Their main goal is to trick people into giving them money or personal information. They build trust through elaborate stories before making their move.

  2. Phishers:

They try to steal sensitive data like passwords or credit card details by sending links to fake websites that look real.

  3. Blackmailers:

These individuals use fake profiles to gather compromising material, later threatening to expose their victims unless their demands are met.

  4. Manipulators:

They use fake identities to control, deceive and emotionally exploit others, often for their own satisfaction or power.

  5. Trolls:

Their goal is simple: to annoy and frustrate people. They create fake profiles purely to mess with others.

  6. Catfishers:

They build fake personas to gain attention or form relationships under false pretences. Some do it for emotional validation, while others just enjoy the deception.

  7. Curious Explorers:

Some people don't want to reveal their real identity but still want to see how dating apps work. Some men even create fake female profiles to check out their competition.

  8. Revenge Seekers:

These individuals use fake profiles to target people they hold grudges against, often by spreading false information or damaging reputations.

  9. Spambots:

Automated accounts that flood dating apps with unsolicited messages, links or advertisements, usually to promote products or external websites.

  10. Market Researchers:

Some companies create fake profiles to study user interactions, track trends and refine their marketing strategies.

  11. Data Harvesters:

These individuals collect user information to sell to third parties or use for targeted advertising. Fake profiles allow them to extract as much data as possible.

Fake profiles are everywhere on dating apps and these are just some of the reasons behind them. If you've encountered anything suspicious that isn't listed here, let me know!

Conclusion

Dating apps are a great way to meet people, but they also come with risks. Scammers are always evolving, finding new ways to deceive users. However, by staying aware and looking for these red flags, we can navigate the dating world safely.
