Lifestyle Home Portrait Photoshoot with Lukas Berger
As anticipated, doing a professional home portrait photoshoot on the balcony was extremely challenging due to the lighting. While the beautiful background was something that made balcony shots special, it was very much brighter than the indoors with the blessing of the sun.
If I were to simply use a DSLR without any light equipment, it either Lukas would look very dark, or the background would be overblown (just white) and all details would be gone. I wasn't intending to do any silhouette photoshoot since the purpose of the session was to showcase Lukas' charm, while I want to retain the details of the background since it's the reason for doing a photoshoot at the balcony.
Lukas headed my idea to proceed with the other sessions of the photoshoot first, to wait for the sun to go even lower. I had roughly told him the challenge during our text discussion and his high intelligence seemed to help him to digest every piece of information well. Basically, he trusted me fully.
To speed up the balcony photoshoot, I brought along a speedlite instead of any of my portable studio strobes. The plan was to imitate the ceiling lamp that would then throw flattering light on Lukas.
The next challenge was the everchanging amount of sunlight that I had to try to balance with my speedlite. At times, I had to abuse my speedlite to fire it at its full power to match the sunlight.
Eventually, we nailed the photoshoot.
