Outdoor Casual Couple Photoshoot with Elvis Philip & Monali P
Monali contacted me while they were still in the US. They wanted to have a couple photoshoot in Singapore during their impromptu Asia tour.
Monali's actual idea was to have the photoshoot done at both the domes - Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. I discouraged her since doing a portrait photoshoot over there was too mainstream and didn't have much room for creativity, and most of the photographs would turn out to be tourist-like. Furthermore, there would be many photo bombs. Whereas, the two hours that she booked could hardly cover this photoshoot session outside the domes. She decided to play by the ears.
On the other hand, having a portrait photoshoot inside the two domes might benefit my portfolio more, as tourists would be more interested to hire a photographer for the photography inside.
The initial date of the photoshoot was postponed for the fear of bad weather although it didn't rain on that day, and in fact, was better weather for doing an outdoor portrait photoshoot.
On the actual day of the photoshoot, I made a big blunder by setting my alarm clock wrongly. I jumped up from my bed an hour late. Fortunately, I had the habit of setting a huge buffer for the preparation of my photoshoots. Furthermore, I was ambitious that I wanted to reach there earlier to scout around. I was thus able to make it on time by rushing off without having my breakfast.
Eventually, I reached earlier than the scheduled time but the makeup session was delayed. I took the opportunity to do what I initially planned - looked around the place to ensure it was what I had in mind, or otherwise, make last-minute plans.
I ended up waiting for them for nearly an hour. By then, I was a little exhausted from my exploration.
We began with some simple shots and they got into the mood quickly. We tried out both sweet and edgy feels throughout the shoot. Elvis turned out to enjoy his quirky poses most and I thought it was a waste not to utilise his fun-loving character to create more interesting work.
The biggest challenge I encountered was the harsh natural light. Due to having a professional makeup session that would already require Monali to wake up earlier, I didn't plan for the project to begin at the golden hour. As the "late" hour shoot was delayed, the natural light was terrible. I often had to battle with backlighting situations and had problems with the camera's auto-focusing system.
Alas, it was a fun shoot.
