ID & Contractor Recommendation by Interior Photographer in Singapore

About: Skai the Interior Photographer

My Quick Background

Hey there! I'm Skai, a professional photographer based in Singapore. Welcome to my little corner of the internet where I share some good recommendations because I believe in good karma. I also wish people would give me genuine good recommendation of services that I need in the future.

Just a quick background: when it comes to interior photography, I'm the go-to guy for IDs, contractors, real estate agents, homeowners, furniture companies and F&B businesses — you name it!

Since I do bespoke photography to produce meaningful and high-quality work for every client, it takes me lots of effort and time for each project, and thus my photography rates aren't the lowest in the market. Hence, my clients are mostly people who appreciate quality work and I believe they do produce work of certain high standard as well.

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with various IDs and contractors who need their finished renovation projects to be documented to showcase to their potential clients. I've witnessed their skills, professionalism and dedication first-hand.

Reasons for Recommending the IDs

As an enthusiast in interior design and home improvements, I actively participate in various related groups on Facebook. Within these groups, I've encountered countless homeowners desperately seeking reliable recommendations. It's also where I've heard horror stories of individuals enduring financial and emotional turmoil due to unscrupulous interior designers (IDs) or scammers absconding with their hard-earned money.

Just imagine investing a substantial sum, even taking out a loan, to secure a shelter, only to fall victim to a deceitful ID who swindles the remaining funds earmarked for your home's liveability - it's truly disheartening. Such tales deeply affect me because empathy is integral to my character.

With my busybody nature, I've always gone above and beyond to lend a hand. Consequently, instead of standing idly by as individuals become prey to these dishonest practitioners, I believe in advocating for reliable and affordable IDs. By engaging the services of my recommended IDs, homeowners not only safeguard themselves from unscrupulous individuals but also gain access to superior services at competitive rates. It's like being a matchmaker, connecting homeowners with renovation services tailored to their unique needs. I'm ready to share my insights on the best ID cum contractor in the business.

But let's face it, typing out lengthy paragraphs every time a homeowner asks for a recommendation on social media can be a bit of a drag. I mean, who's got time for that? That's why I've taken matters into my own hands and created this informative page slowly (I'm very busy and please give me time to add more information). It's a one-stop shop for all your home renovation needs, where you'll find my handpicked recommendation, gathered through years of experience and a keen eye for quality.

So, if you're in need of a reliable ID or contractor, this page is the place to be. I'm here to make your life easier, save time and ensure you get the top-notch service you deserve. Together, let's navigate the exciting journey of transforming houses into dream homes. Welcome to my page, where recommendations meet convenience!

Different Types of Interior Designers in Singapore

Disclaimer: The following terms are coined by me and may not represent official industry classifications. Oftentimes, an interior designer may practice a mixture of these approaches but will typically lean towards one predominantly. With that clarification in mind, let's explore these categories to gain a better understanding of the diverse landscape of interior design professionals in Singapore.

Salespersons

  1. Description: Salespersons are primarily responsible for acquiring new business for interior design (ID) firms. They possess a certain level of knowledge in the interior design field, surpassing that of regular homeowners. However, their proficiency in providing tailored design solutions may be limited. They operate on a commission-based model, where their income relies solely on securing leads to sign up for renovation packages. While the commission for salespersons may be relatively low, their duties may not include project supervision or detailed design work. Large ID firms often recruit numerous salespersons, regardless of experience, to expand their businesses.
  2. Business Model: ID firms employing salespersons typically create enticing renovation packages to attract customers, sometimes offering deals that seem too good to be true. The companies conduct marketing to acquire new leads, which the salespersons then follow up on. Additionally, these firms often have partnerships with retail shops, such as those selling bathroom accessories, kitchenware and mattresses. Salespersons earn commissions for bringing in customers, further increasing the firm's profits.
  3. Work Approach: Salespersons may not always oversee the entire renovation project or engage in tasks like 3D modelling.
  4. Pricing: While salespersons may offer attractive packages for basic renovations, it's important to note that additional essential items, such as electrical and plumbing work, beyond the package will come at a higher price. For example, if the package includes 20 feet of kitchen top and bottom carpentry, any additional length or additional features like sintered stone or quartz countertops will incur substantial additional charges.

Bespoke Interior Designers

  1. Description: Bespoke interior designers handle all aspects of the design process for homeowners. They collaborate closely with clients to understand their style preferences and then proceed to design every aspect of the home accordingly.
  2. Business Model: Bespoke interior designers typically operate on a service-based model, offering comprehensive design solutions tailored to the client's needs. They often showcase sophisticated existing home designs to attract new customers seeking beautifully crafted dream homes.
  3. Work Approach: From conceptualisation to execution, these designers take charge of the entire design process, ensuring the creation of customised designs that meet the client's specific requirements.
  4. Pricing: Due to the extensive effort and time invested in creating personalised designs, bespoke interior designers usually command higher fees compared to other types of IDs. The higher fees may come in terms of the purchasing of more items for the interior design to create the intended mood, and most interior designers earn by marking up the prices of items.

Consultant Designers

  1. Description: Consultant designers cater to homeowners who may not require comprehensive design services. They offer suggestions, particularly regarding materials, based on the homeowners' stated preferences.
  2. Business Model: Consultant designers oversee the entire renovation project, akin to a main contractor, ensuring smooth project execution while providing design recommendations.
  3. Work Approach: These designers offer more budget-friendly services compared to other types of IDs, focusing on providing expert guidance and recommendations to clients.
  4. Pricing: Consultant designers typically offer more affordable services, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners seeking professional design advice.

Understanding the distinctions between these types of interior designers can help homeowners make informed decisions when selecting an interior designer for their project.

Criteria to Appear on My ID List: What Sets Them Apart

During my interior shoots, I often chit-chat with the homeowners to find out about more about the renovation and my clients (the ID or contractor). I would go to the extra mile to find out the essence of the design from the homeowners, so that I can do better interior shoot jobs for my clients. I also want to understand more about my clients from their clients (the homeowners and other business owners) so that I know whom I'm really working with - to protect myself.

In curating the list of interior designers and contractors on this page, I uphold specific criteria to ensure that you, as a homeowner, receive recommendations that align with the highest standards. These criteria are not just arbitrary; they are derived from my convictions and experiences.

  1. Personal Experience: Every ID/contractor listed here is someone with whom I've had direct and personal experience. I believe that first-hand encounters are imperative to gauge their proficiency accurately before featuring their services.
  2. Honesty and Transparency: Integrity matters. I exclusively collaborate with IDs/contractors who embody honesty and transparency, especially concerning pricing. The ID's ability to provide a detailed quotation, encompassing essential aspects like plumbing and electrical work, is crucial. While renovations may change, the core components must be transparently presented to avoid any unforeseen financial surprises.
  3. Affordable Rates: Besides transparency, the rates for renovation matter significantly. In line with my personal preference, IDs should offer reasonable prices. However, I don't expect them to provide the lowest rates in the market because quality work requires effort, and cheap doesn't necessarily equate to good quality. When comparing materials of the same quality, their quotation should be fair and better than most other providers, and the workmanship of their workers should be good.
  4. Expertise: A master in their craft is a non-negotiable criterion. The interior designer must possess substantial experience to offer professional guidance to clients, navigating seamlessly through the intricacies of the renovation process and demonstrating a profound understanding of various materials.
  5. Functionality: In my book, functionality trumps mere aesthetics, although both are undeniably important. I admire IDs/contractors who prioritise making the client's everyday life better through thoughtful design. An ideal ID or contractor suggests renovations that enhance practicality. For instance, recommending a kitchen layout based on the triangular principle to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow in food preparation.

These criteria not only reflect my values but are intended to guide you towards professionals who prioritise client satisfaction, transparent practices and the art of making a house not just beautiful but practically conducive to everyday living.

ID & Contractor Zack Xu with his client

The ID/contractor with the best feedback from the homeowners I have spoken to is Zack. The homeowners seemed to have a special liking for him and his renovation services. They were excited to share with me how the renovation had made their lives better.

Not only does he have the technical know-how of a contractor, but he's also equipped with a keen eye for design. It's a match made in renovation heaven!

It was during this time that he truly discovered his passion for creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that enhance the lives of homeowners.

Building on his architectural background, Zack ventured into a big ID company for a while, where he further honed his skills and gained valuable industry insights. This experience exposed him to a wide range of projects, allowing him to tackle various design challenges and refine his craftsmanship.

Zack's Competitive Renovation Prices

Most homeowners who look for a contractor instead of ID is due to the lower price. As a contractor, Zack fits well into this category.

Zack may not have the lowest renovation prices in town, but you know what they say: you get what you pay for. His prices are competitive, and let me tell you, the quality he delivers is worth every penny. With Zack, you'll be getting top-notch craftsmanship without breaking the bank.

Initially, I was stunned when two of the homeowners told me they had cheaper quotations but they eventually chose Zack. This spike my curiosity in Zack and his services, making him shine out of the rest of my clients for interior photography.

Zack has very detailed breakdown of cost, and I see that his working style is to very similar to mine.

Zack's Expertise

Let me dive deeper into Zack's impressive expertise. Prepare to be amazed by the breadth and depth of his skills.

Oh no, he took a design course in a polytechnic during his school days, giving him a solid foundation of design knowledge. That's right, he's got the skills that many IDs out there lack. Unlike those who entered the ID field without prior design training, Zack brings a unique advantage to the table. His design expertise sets him apart, making him an exceptional choice for your renovation needs.
  2. Space-planning: Speaking of design, Zack's talent for space planning is truly a sight to behold. After-Sales Services

Some of the interior photography projects that I had done for Zack were older projects of his that he had handed over to the homeowners for more than half a year. There were a few times that Zack showed up during my shoot to help the homeowners personally to fix some stuff. Therefore, I can see that his "after-sales" services is fantastic.

Through a casual conversation, he had shared with me that he even went down to help his old clients to change their LED light.

Testimonials from Zack's Clients

ID & Contractor Zack Xu with his client

When I spent time chatting with homeowners during and after my interior photography shoots, I had the pleasure of hearing numerous remarkable stories about Zack. These stories only deepened my admiration for him. Here are the summary of a few "testimonials" (I asked casually about Zack and the projects) I took verbally from some clients who experienced Zack's exceptional work first-hand:

  1. Testimonial from Homeowner 1: "Zack came to the rescue when I had a dispute with another contractor over a small repair before my full renovation (with him). He stepped in and spoke to the contractor on my behalf, saving me a significant amount of money. His intervention and negotiation skills were truly impressive. I couldn't be more grateful for his help and the way he prioritised my best interests."
  2. Testimonial from Homeowner 2: "My kitchen was dim and I had sought help from several IDs and contractors, none of whom could solve the problem. One even insisted that a wall couldn't be hacked off. But then I met Zack, who brought his extensive experience to the table. He not only found a solution to brighten up my kitchen but also cleverly tackled other issues through space planning. Zack had done something truly 'insane' that made a huge difference to the location of my wash machine."

Note: It was until she proudly revealed her washing machine that I realised Zack was insanely good in space-planning.
  3. Testimonial from Homeowner 3: "Unlike other IDs who focused solely on making my kitchen look aesthetically pleasing, Zack took it to a whole new level with his exceptional space-planning skills. He transformed my kitchen, not just in terms of appearance but also in terms of functionality. His attention to detail and ability to optimise the space were truly extraordinary. Thanks to Zack's expertise, even my daughter has started using the kitchen to cook. It's become a space that brings us joy and inspires creativity."

These testimonials were taken verbally from homeowners highlight the outstanding qualities and capabilities that Zack brings to his work. From resolving disputes and finding innovative solutions to improving functionality and creating spaces that exceed expectations, Zack's commitment to his clients shines through in every project. His dedication to delivering exceptional results and making a positive impact on the lives of homeowners is truly commendable.

Zack's Personality

Zack, in addition to being a skilled professional, possesses several admirable personal qualities that contribute to his reputation and the trust he garners from clients. Let me paint a vivid picture of Zack for you:

  1. Soft-spoken and Gentle: Despite his tall stature, Zack carries himself with a calm and composed demeanour. His words flow gently and he speaks in a polite and respectful manner. This gentle nature creates a comfortable environment for his clients and fosters open communication throughout the renovation process.
  2. Honest and Modest: Unlike those who may boast about their accomplishments, Zack remains refreshingly humble. He doesn't feel the need to exaggerate his abilities or inflate his achievements. Instead, he lets his work speak for itself, focusing on delivering outstanding results rather than seeking recognition or self-promotion.
  3. Trusting and Empowering: One remarkable aspect of Zack's character is his trust in others, including his collaborators and team members. He places a great deal of trust in those he works with, giving them the autonomy and responsibility to carry out tasks and make decisions. For instance, he entrusts me with his interior photoshoot projects, allowing me to work independently and contribute to the success of his projects.

Calvin Lee

Calvin's ID Company: Resolute Reno

Unlike larger firms, Resolute Reno boasts a small but dedicated team of interior designers, ensuring quality control of their team.

One of the key advantages of Resolute Reno is their in-house carpentry team. By having their own carpenters, they can offer more reasonable rates compared to firms that outsource this aspect of the work. This also allows for greater control over the quality of the craftsmanship, ensuring that every project meets their high standards.

At this point of writing, they were in the midst of renovating their showroom.

How I met Calvin

I first met Calvin Lee when his colleague approached me for an interior shoot at a condominium near Marina Bay. Both of them arrived early to set up and it was the first time that I interacted with Calvin. His vibe was great.

How Calvin Impressed Me Initially

  1. Trusted by Clients: Calvin's commitment to building trust with his clients is evident in the level of confidence they place in him. For instance, when a customer living in an upscale area of Singapore entrusted him with their condominium keys for an interior shoot while they were out of the country, it showcased the deep trust Calvin has worked hard to earn.
  2. Respectful: During our initial interaction, Calvin's respectful demeanour immediately put me at ease. Despite our lack of prior communication, his relaxed attitude made the interior shoot, which also included capturing portraits of him against the stunning Marina Bay skyline, a seamless and enjoyable experience.
  3. Expertise and Passion: As we discussed renovation details, Calvin's genuine interest in his craft became apparent. He openly shared insights on carpentry work and materials, demonstrating a dedication to his profession that resonated with my passion for photography, fostering a strong rapport between us.

My Home Renovation Journey with Calvin

  1. Going Above and Beyond: Despite his busy schedule, Calvin made time to visit my new BTO flat to offer advice, leaving a lasting impression with his willingness to go above and beyond for his clients. Subsequent discussions further underscored his commitment to ensuring my satisfaction.
  2. Client-Centric Recommendations: Calvin's recommendations were always in the best interest of our project, even if it meant reducing his income. For example, he advised against a custom-made carpentry solution in the bathroom, instead suggesting a more cost-effective and water-resistant off-the-shelf option that better suited our needs.
  3. Transparency: Transparency was a hallmark of Calvin's pricing strategy, with all items listed to prevent any surprises down the line.
  4. Honest Assessment: Calvin's honesty extended beyond his services; when presented with a competitor's quotation, he acknowledged their favourable rates, showcasing his integrity and commitment to his client's best interests.
  5. Proactive Approach: By taking measurements, and discussing and fabricating carpentry before the Chinese New Year holidays, Calvin demonstrated a proactive approach to minimising wait times and expediting the renovation process, allowing us to move into our home sooner.
  6. Flexibility and Fairness: Even when we made adjustments to the project scope, Calvin remained accommodating and understanding, prioritising our satisfaction over his profits.
  7. Commitment to Client Satisfaction: Calvin's approach to payments was characterised by flexibility and fairness, exemplifying his dedication to client satisfaction above all else.

Calvin's Vision in Interior Design

Calvin Lee's philosophy in interior design is cantered around two key principles: fostering enduring relationships with clients and establishing a reputation for excellence within the industry. At the heart of his approach lies the belief in cultivating repeat business opportunities.

To achieve this, Calvin strongly emphasises providing his clients with the best possible prices and services. He is dedicated to approaching all projects, regardless of size, with the same care and attention to detail. Calvin understands that by consistently delivering exceptional value and honouring his commitments, clients are more inclined to recommend his services to others. This form of organic marketing expands his client base and attracts customers with larger budgets for more extensive renovation projects.

The Ugly Facts about the Renovation Industry

Alright, it's time to unveil the not-so-pretty side of the renovation industry. Brace yourselves, because we're about to dive into some ugly facts that you need to know. Here's the lowdown:

  1. Monetary reward over passion: First and foremost, let's talk about the motivations behind some IDs entering the industry. Sadly, not everyone is driven by a passion for design and creating beautiful spaces. Many IDs join the industry solely for the monetary reward, with little genuine interest in the craft. This can lead to a lack of creativity and passion in the designs they produce.
  2. Expansion-driven ID companies: Now, let's shed some light on the workings of many ID companies out there. These companies are often eager to expand their operations, as their IDs work on a commission basis. The bosses have little to lose by hiring a large number of IDs, even if it means some leads may go to waste if the hired IDs aren't skilled salespeople. This influx of inexperienced IDs saturates the market, resulting in a sea of uninspiring designs and recommendations.
  3. Overheads: Here's the ugly truth about the pricing structure in many ID firms. The system often involves numerous overhead costs, which means that the prices you end up paying can be significantly higher than the actual value of the renovation.
  4. Cheap packages, costly add-ons: Beware of the gimmicks employed by some ID companies. They may lure you in with incredibly cheap basic renovation packages, only to hit you with hefty charges for essential add-ons. It's a bait-and-switch game that can leave you feeling cheated and frustrated. Be cautious and always read the fine print.
  5. IT-savviness and miscommunication: Now, let's shift our focus to the communication challenges that can arise during the renovation process. Many old-school contractors are not IT-savvy, which can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings. They may struggle to provide detailed drawings of carpentry work or rely on outdated methods that hinder clear communication. It's a roadblock that can cause headaches and delays.
  6. Presence of scammers: Last but not least, we need to address the unfortunate presence of scammers in the industry. Yes, you heard it right—there are unscrupulous individuals out there who are ready to take your money and disappear into thin air. It's a sad reality that cannot be ignored. The rise of social media platforms has provided scammers with new avenues to deceive unsuspecting homeowners. It's crucial to be vigilant, do thorough research and seek trusted recommendations to protect yourself from falling victim to these scams.

There you have it, the not-so-pretty side of the renovation industry. It's essential to be aware of these ugly facts and navigate the industry with caution. But fear not, my friends, armed with knowledge and careful consideration, you can find reliable and trustworthy professionals who will turn your renovation dreams into a stunning reality. Stay informed, stay vigilant and let's work together to elevate the standards of the industry.

Bad Experiences with IDs as an Interior Photographer

Let me share some of my personal experiences with other IDs that left a bitter taste in my mouth. These encounters have taught me the importance of assessing a service provider's character based on how they treat their clients and their vendors. Here are a couple of instances that shed light on this matter:

  1. Drag payment: In one particular collaboration, an ID approached me with an agreement for a long-term partnership. Initially, everything seemed promising and for the first project, the ID promptly fulfilled his payment obligations as we had agreed upon. However, as time passed, the situation took a turn for the worse. The ID started to drag his feet when it came to settling payments for subsequent projects. It became frustrating and disheartening to experience this delay, especially considering our initial positive interactions.

After I got back the last few payments from him, I ghosted him. I knew he could have continued to give me lots of businesses, given that he liked my work and working style; however, I choose to work only with people who are responsible and trustworthy, so that I can focus on producing the best work possible without having worries.
  2. Abuse my professionalism: Another incident involved the owner of an ID company who was very satisfied with our first project. Subsequently, he sought my advice for a couple of projects for his other businesses. Initially, I was happy to offer my expertise and provide consultation. However, what followed was a series of disappointments. After each consultation, the owner would suddenly go missing in action (MIA). It felt like a waste of my time and efforts, as my insights, recommendations and time were abused.

These experiences have reinforced my belief that a service provider's treatment of their vendors speaks volumes about their true character. It's easy for someone to put on a friendly front when dealing with clients who bring in revenue, but how they interact with vendors reveals their integrity and professionalism. As a homeowner seeking renovation services, it's crucial to consider not only how an ID treats their clients but also how they handle relationships with their vendors. Look for service providers who demonstrate fairness, transparency, and timely payments, as these qualities are indicative of their overall ethical conduct and reliability.

My Journey of Securing My Interior Designer for My First House

  1. Client Trust: I wanted to choose my ID from among my clients for interior photography because I have worked with them and believed there was a higher chance of being treated fairly.
  2. Carnival Encounter: At a carnival at Genting Hotel for my new Tengah estate, we were greeted by various service providers, including two interior design firms. After the information-sharing and sales speeches in the hall, the exits were guarded by a massive number of IDs, which was very intimidating. Since we hadn't talked to any ID yet, we decided to hear from the least heavily scrutinized one. I was curious about how those big ID firms work and how good their beautifully priced packages were.
  3. Initial Interaction: When one ID from that firm grabbed us, we decided to hear him out. We told him honestly that we hadn't talked to any ID yet and needed to do more comparisons; we didn't want to give him any false hope. He sounded honest and humble. We told him our basic needs, including a window for our service yard and a door for the kitchen. He assured us that everything was very cheap and that the service yard window would cost only over $300. There was a special promotion, but we had to place a small deposit on that day to secure it. That ID promised that if we decided to drop his services, he would refund us the deposit privately, as his company didn't allow refunds. My wife was eager about the cheap package and decided to place the deposit since it was refundable.
  4. Office Meeting: We had an official meeting with him at his office about a week later. I felt uncertain about the ID as he had previously told us that the service yard window would cost less than $400 but then quoted us almost double the price. He repeatedly claimed everything was cheap without giving an estimate. When we asked him for suggestions for some custom-made carpentry, he didn't have many ideas, and his colleague came over to help. As we discussed the kitchen renovation, I could tell that he wasn't good at functionality, which I was most concerned with. Overall, I felt he was inconsistent and couldn't remember some of our previous discussions. My wife thought he was just too tired.
  5. Second Meeting: During the next meetup in his new office, which was nearer to us, unlike my wife, I was already totally uninterested in working with him because of my interior photographer's instinct and observation skills. When we told him we didn't want to proceed with carpentry near the main door, he sounded extremely overjoyed, which was a red flag. I knew well that every ID takes a cut out of every carpentry item, and it was a huge sum, so he shouldn't have been happy about it, especially after we spent a lot of time discussing it during the previous session.
  6. Seeking Alternatives: Insistent on not continuing with this ID's services, I had to take action. I approached my long-term client, Zack, for a consultation, highlighting that it was just to help me as a friend and that we might not necessarily sign up for his renovation services. My wife felt Zack was experienced and knowledgeable, but she was quiet since she wanted me to handle it, and her reason was that Zack was my friend. A few months later, we met again to clarify our doubts about our new ideas.
  7. Last-Minute Panic: After receiving our keys, we panicked as we hadn't confirmed any ID and wanted to move into the house as soon as possible. We contacted Zack again to view our flat physically to confirm things. Unfortunately, Zack was very busy and couldn't come over at our specific time.
  8. Meeting Calvin: We decided to give another client of mine, Calvin, a chance since I was impressed with him and his passion. Calvin managed to squeeze time out of his packed schedule to meet us at our flat while it was still bright. His recommendations differed from Zack's, and both were correct; it was up to personal preference. We were most impressed with Calvin's idea to cut down on costs. Calvin's proactive approach gave a very good vibe to my wife, and we decided to work with him. We met up with Calvin numerous times over many details, including the selection of laminates. There were a few small issues with his workers, but he made an effort to rectify everything.
  9. Refunding the Deposit: After confirming the renovation services with Calvin, we decided to get a refund from the first ID firm we had talked to. I was correct in my suspicion that they weren't very honest, although they were okay with refunding us. During the first meeting, the ID told us he would refund us privately, but now, he said it would take some time for his office to process the refund. It dragged on, and about a month after the deadline, my wife had to push him for it, and he refunded us personally. I was informed by my new neighbours that the ID firm was part of a renovation association, and thus they had to abide by the rules to return the deposit regardless.
  10. Neighbour's Experience: As time passed, I heard many horror stories about the initial ID firm from my new neighbours. They attended the same carnival and were approached by their IDs, signing up for the packages. One neighbour thought the ID firm was big and thus should be good. The ID claimed to be the firm's top 10 ID, but it didn't change the fact that he caused a big problem for this neighbour. She had to sell her old flat to buy the new BTO flat. Her ID didn't factor in the Chinese New Year period, during which most Malaysian workers would return to their country for around two weeks. The ID delayed the handover of the house not by two weeks, but by four weeks. This was poor planning, especially by a supposedly very experienced ID ranked in the top 10 of his big firm. My neighbour had to delay handing over her old house to the buyer. Just the day before the latest scheduled move-in date, her ID still had workers doing major work. I felt fortunate to have convinced my wife to drop the ID from the same firm.

FAQ

  1. What is the difference between an ID and a contractor? An interior designer (ID) specialises in the aesthetic aspects of a project, such as space planning and design concepts, while a contractor focuses on the execution and construction work. Some IDs and contractors may have interlaced skill sets.
  2. How do I choose the right ID or contractor for my project? Research their portfolio, check reviews and testimonials, assess their expertise in your specific project type and meet them in person to gauge their compatibility. Get quotations from them and ensure they include the majority of the components, such as plumbing and electrical work, which may make a big difference to the final price. Ensure there's no price shock at the end of the renovation.
  3. What qualifications or certifications should I look for in an ID or contractor? From my understanding, most IDs and contractors in Singapore learn through experience and don't require any special courses. Minimally, the company must be HDB-approved, but do note that being listed anywhere doesn't guarantee the professional will always be honest.
  4. How long does a typical renovation project take? The duration varies based on the scope and complexity of the project. It's best to discuss timelines with the ID or contractor during the initial consultation. Carpentry fabrication will likely take up a lot of time. Should your renovation clash with Chinese New Year, it may take longer due to a shortage of staff.
  5. How much does it cost to hire an ID or contractor for my project? Costs depend on factors like project size, materials used and customisation requirements. It's recommended to get detailed quotes from multiple professionals for accurate estimates.
  6. Can an ID or contractor work within my budget? Skilled IDs and contractors can work with your budget by suggesting cost-effective alternatives, managing expenses and providing transparent pricing. Of course, you have to be realistic with your expectations. Make sure to get a detailed quotation to avoid any price shock.
  7. Do I need to hire both an ID and a contractor, or can one person handle both roles? It depends on the project and your preference. Some professionals offer both design and construction services, while others collaborate with contractors for the execution phase. You have to double-check with the ID.
  8. How involved will I be in the decision-making process during the renovation? Your involvement can vary based on your preferences. Good communication with the ID or contractor ensures your input is considered throughout the process.
  9. What kind of materials and finishes can an ID or contractor provide? IDs and contractors have access to a wide range of materials and finishes. They can provide recommendations based on your design preferences, budget and functionality requirements.
  10. How can I ensure that the renovation process goes smoothly and stays on schedule? Establish clear communication, define project milestones and have a detailed contract outlining timelines, deliverables and contingencies.
  11. Can an ID or contractor help with obtaining necessary permits and approvals? Yes, experienced professionals can guide you through the permit process and handle the necessary paperwork on your behalf.
  12. What happens if there are delays or issues during the renovation? A good ID or contractor will address delays or issues promptly, communicate transparently and propose solutions to keep the project on track.
  13. How do I communicate my design preferences and ideas to an ID or contractor? Share visual references, create mood boards and have open discussions to clearly convey your design preferences. Effective communication is key.
  14. Can an ID or contractor provide references or examples of their past work? Yes, reputable professionals will gladly provide references and showcase their previous projects to demonstrate their capabilities and style. This is why they will spend money to hire professional interior photographers like me to capture the finished work as their portfolios.
  15. What kind of warranty or guarantee is provided for the work done by an ID or contractor? Warranties and guarantees vary among professionals. It's important to discuss this with your chosen ID or contractor to understand the coverage provided for their workmanship.

Disclaimer

I want to be transparent with you, dear reader. I haven't sought permission before sharing the commendable renovation services highlighted on this page. It's entirely based on my own initiative to assist every homeowner in avoiding the pitfalls of engaging with less-than-scrupulous IDs.

The professionals listed here are personally selected from my real clients, whom I have, to the best of my ability, recognised as honest and reliable IDs through my interactions and observations.

It's crucial to note that, as they are my clients, there's a possibility they may approach me for interior shoots upon completing any project, including yours. Consequently, I might stand to gain from recommending their services. However, it's important to acknowledge that there are numerous interior photographers available, many of whom offer competitive rates, and therefore, the IDs I'm recommending may not necessarily engage my interior photography services again.

Always exercise your discretion and explore various options to ensure the best fit for your needs.
