Bedroom Boudoir Photoshoot with Leila Barrick
This shoot posed a few challenges for me.
Firstly, the room size was rather small and the bed had taken up most of the space, shared by the platform by the windows and the built-in wardrobe at the other end. Therefore, I had a very limited opinion to place my lighting.
Secondly, the built-in wardrobe was nicely covered with mirrors, which was a double-edged sword. The advantage was that Leila was able to look at her poses and make necessary adjustments. However, she was too focused on her mirrored image which I felt was distracting her from displaying her best expression. Another issue caused by the mirror was that it was further limiting the angle of my shoot and placement of the strobe.
Thirdly, the setting of the room wasn't what I had expected. I loved the simplicity but it was rather too empty and I quite disliked the bed frame, especially at the footer. Perhaps, I could use the bed frame for a few shots but it was further limiting my angle for the "normal" shots.
Lastly, the timing given to me wasn't the most ideal time, although the cloudy sky had helped a lot in reducing the harshness of the sun. I was glad enough that I was able to take up this "last minute" project before she took off from Singapore.
Of course, a photographer had to make full of use of everything and there were worse situations. I counted myself very lucky for this shoot.
The oddest thing was that her parents were at home. Nevertheless, I was glad that both of them seemed to trust me and they didn't even make any attempt to enter the room.
My initial plan was to do a high-key shoot since the entire room was painted white. However, after discussing it with her, I figured out that she somehow preferred more shadows.
I used a single strobe and it was difficult enough for me to move it even a little to adjust its position during the shoot to accommodate the poses.
The shoot ended earlier than expected since she hadn't recovered from her illness. While packing up, I told her to go through the photographs on the tiny LCD screen of my camera but she assured me that she trusted my professionalism.
I was glad to be able to produce this casual boudoir shoot work.
