How Skai Began Doing Outdoor Portrait Photography
Like many budding photographers, my journey into outdoor portrait photography began as a practical choice. The lack of capital to rent a studio or possess an expansive personal space nudged me towards the open air where the canvas was vast and the possibilities, endless. Outdoor shoots, being cost-free, offered a perfect starting point for someone navigating the early stages of the photography craft.
Yet, the decision to delve into outdoor portrait photography brought forth a unique set of challenges. Unlike controlled studio environments, the whims of weather became an influential factor. The elements added an unpredictable dimension, making each shoot an intricate dance with nature. The ever-changing interplay of sunlight, cloud cover and unexpected rain posed challenges that I hadn't initially anticipated.
Despite the challenges, this unintentional initiation into outdoor portrait photography turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Through trial and error, I found myself honing my skills, mastering the art of harnessing natural light and even embracing the nuances of nocturnal photography.
Battling the sun's harsh rays during the day and the lack of light at night became integral aspects of my learning curve, leading me to experiment with artificial lighting. In this process, I not only discovered the technical intricacies of outdoor shoots but also developed an intuitive understanding of how to weave external elements into compelling visual narratives.
The early struggles with weather and lighting turned out to be the crucible in which my passion for outdoor portrait photography was forged, laying the foundation for a journey marked by creativity and resilience.
Why Skai Loves Doing Outdoor Portrait Photography
As an outdoor portrait photographer, I love working in the great outdoors because it provides me with a variety of different settings to work in. I love the freedom to move around and explore different locations to find the perfect spot for each of my clients.
I am particularly fond of natural light and the way it can create beautiful and unique lighting effects that are difficult to replicate in a studio. Natural light is constantly changing and it's always a new challenge for me to work with it and make the most of it.
Being outside and working with natural light and surroundings helps me to feel more connected to nature, which is incredibly inspiring and energising for me. It makes my job more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Outdoor portrait photography allows me a lot more flexibility in terms of composition and posing, as there are more options available in terms of backgrounds and setting. I can be more creative and experimental, using the natural environment to create interesting and dynamic compositions and lighting effects.
The sense of freshness and spontaneity that outdoor portrait photography brings, allows me to capture candid and authentic shots of my clients.
Lastly, many outdoor locations are free of charge, which can be a cost-effective solution for my clients.
Overall, being an outdoor portrait photographer is a challenging and rewarding experience for me, it allows me to use the natural environment to create beautiful and unique photographs that capture the beauty and emotion of my clients, and also provide more interesting backgrounds than studio photography with the added benefit of being cost-effective.
Understanding Outdoor Portrait Photography
What is Outdoor Portrait Photography?
Outdoor portrait photography refers to the specialised art of capturing individuals or groups in outdoor settings, utilising the natural environment as a backdrop. This form of photography is distinctively characterised by the intentional use of external elements, such as landscapes, urban scenes or natural light, to frame and enhance the subject. In outdoor portrait photography, the photographer skilfully leverages the interplay between the subject and their surroundings, seeking to encapsulate the essence of the individual or group within the chosen outdoor setting.
What is Outdoor Portrait Photography also Known as?
Outdoor portrait photography is often interchangeably known as outdoor environmental portrait photography or simply as outdoor photography. This terminology emphasises the integration of the subject with their surroundings in an outdoor setting. Additionally, it aligns with the broader genre of outdoor photography, highlighting the distinctive approach of capturing individuals or groups in natural environments. The use of terms such as outdoor portrait and environmental portrait underscores the emphasis on the relationship between the subject and the outdoor backdrop in this particular style of photography.
High-end VS Casual Outdoor Photoshoot
Above: High-end outdoor photoshoot using flash light
Above: Casual outdoor photoshoot using natural light
The two common ways to do an outdoor photoshoot are to use natural light or a flashlight (on top of natural light). I term the latter as high-end photography, which has many advantages, including making the photographs more impactful and making the subject "pops out".
Professional lighting equipment requires (1) huge cost to purchase, (2) larger storage space, (3) longer preparation for photoshoots, (4) more time and effort in setting up and (5) more effort to test lighting for each scene or if the subject or lighting were to shift. On top of that, professional lighting equipment causes (6) huge inconvenience in travelling and will (7) attract more attention from the public.
I observe that most photographers, especially hobbyists, are leaning towards the use of natural light due to its ease. I personally prefer doing high-end outdoor photography because it can make my work stand out from the rest and I can have more control over everything. Eventually, it's up to individuals' preferences in the kind of photography.
What is an Outdoor Portrait Photographer?
An outdoor portrait photographer is a professional photographer who specialises in taking portraits of individuals or groups in outdoor settings. Outdoor portrait photography typically involves taking photographs in natural landscapes, such as gardens, parks, beaches and other natural environments.
Outdoor portrait photographers typically use natural light and the surrounding environment to create beautiful and unique photographs that capture the subject's personality and emotions in a natural and authentic way. They may also use professional lighting equipment and techniques to enhance the final images and make them more impactful.
They also take into account the planning, wardrobe and location research to ensure the final photographs are of the highest quality.
Uses of Outdoor Portrait Photography
The uses of outdoor portrait photography are diverse and extend across various contexts.
Primarily employed for personal or professional purposes, these portraits serve as visual representations that convey a range of emotions, moods or narratives. Personal uses may include family portraits, engagement or maternity photoshoots, and capturing individual milestones.
On a professional level, outdoor portrait photography is utilised for corporate headshots, modelling portfolios or branding purposes, where the portrayal of the subject against an outdoor backdrop imparts a distinctive and often more relatable visual appeal.
Why are Outdoor Portrait Photographers Important?
Outdoor portrait photographers are important for a few reasons:
- They create lasting memories: Outdoor portrait photographers capture special moments, events and milestones in people's lives, such as engagements, weddings, graduations, and family portraits. These photographs will be treasured for years to come and will provide a lasting reminder of those special moments.
- They showcase the beauty of the environment: Outdoor portrait photographers use the natural environment as a backdrop for their portraits, showcasing the beauty of the world around us. These photographs can also inspire people to appreciate and explore the natural world.
- They can help to make people feel more confident and comfortable in front of the camera: A good outdoor portrait photographer will be able to make their subjects feel relaxed and comfortable, allowing them to capture natural and authentic expressions in their photographs.
- They can be used for personal or professional purposes: Outdoor portrait photographs can be used for personal use, such as family albums and social media. They can also be used for professional purposes, such as business headshots, modelling portfolios and even for marketing and advertising materials.
- They can add a sense of adventure and spontaneity to photography: Outdoor portrait photography can feel more adventurous and spontaneous than studio photography, and this can lead to more candid and authentic shots.
Overall outdoor portrait photographers help to create beautiful and meaningful photographs that capture people in a natural and authentic way while showcasing the beauty of the environment.
Challenges of Doing Outdoor Portrait Photoshoots
I started doing portrait photography outdoors, just like most other amateurs, because most venues, including parks and gardens, are free to use. Throughout the years, I've encountered many challenges while doing my art. Outdoor portrait photography, however, trains me to become a better photographer because it's more challenging as compared to indoor photography.
-
Weather Most of the photoshoot concepts aren't planned to involve wet weather while weather forecasts aren't always accurate. For normal outdoor photoshoots, I do love the effect of wet ground but it prevents the model from sitting or lying down; I'll also face problems with the placement and set up of my equipment. Another challenge is the strong wind, which makes high-end photography difficult and my lighting equipment does suffer from damage often.
Of course, we can make a wet weather plan to do the outdoor photoshoot, probably in a sheltered area; however, sometimes, the main objective of the photoshoot is to have a certain background, and also a dry look. -
Ever-changing sunlight Both the quality and quantity of lighting can greatly affect the mood of the photographs. Whether it's a high-end or casual outdoor photoshoot, we've to deal with the sunlight if it's done during day time. The density of the cloud does affect both of them. On a cloudy day, the quantity of light is lower while the quality is better (softer) for most portrait photoshoots; whereas it's the opposite on a cloudless day. As the cloud moves, both the quality and quantity of light would change.
For portrait photoshoots, I prefer using manual settings to have better control of everything, including the light. Therefore, the ever-changing sunlight will pose a great challenge, unlike doing an indoor photoshoot that sunlight won't affect as much most of the time. -
Timing of photoshoot As mentioned, lighting is one of the most important factors to create good photographs. For photoshoots where we want the models to look good, the sunlight should be soft and the angle shouldn't be causing bad shadows on the faces.
While flash photography can bring down the quantity of harsh sunlight, it may not be able to overpower the strong noon sun. Therefore, it's usually best to do photoshoots during the golden hour (early morning and late afternoon) when the sunlight is softer and less intense. For natural light photography, the soft light would make the model look good. As for flash (high-end) photography, the dim natural light can be eliminated or reduced easier, and the flash can create flattering and creative light on the model.
However, it's not easy to get the team to wake up early while there may be more photobombs in the late afternoon. For morning photoshoots, the hairstyling and makeup have to begin even earlier, which will pose a bigger challenge to both the model and the hair and makeup artist. -
Photobomb In the usual photoshoots, we don't want distractions in the background. However, in a small and high population density country like Singapore, it's inevitable to have explorers appearing even in the most rural place. Many people are kind and considerate, and they may move away, however, there will be some people who don't bother since they have the right to use the public place. It's always a challenge to get a nice and clear background. -
Low comfort level Doing photoshoots outdoors means the temperature would be warmer than in sheltered locations or even in an air-conditioned place. Moreover, it's likely that the team has to move around more often, which would cause more perspiration. There also won't be very comfortable seats to rest at. -
Insects Outdoor places usually have more insects than indoor places. Insect repellents won't drive all the mosquitoes and sandflies away. -
Dirt Inevitably, the team may have to leave the belonging on the ground and things will get dirty. We may be touching the grounds or even stone seats around. The place can be sandy too. -
Damage to equipment Doing an outdoor photoshoot usually poses greater risks to the photography equipment, especially caused by the wind that would knock down the lighting equipment. Apart from that, dust and sand get into the equipment easier, especially if the venue is a beach. Equipment may rust if they are being caught by water, especially under the rain, -
Requirement of Permit While most outdoor places are free for the public, some are actually owned by private owners. I got chased away by security guards at places that I didn't expect, such as at the edge of an office building by the road and a popular open-air location that's owned by a private developer.
Should I Hire a Professional Outdoor Portrait Photographer?
Whether or not to hire a professional outdoor portrait photographer is a decision that ultimately depends on your personal needs and preferences. Here are a few things to consider when making your decision:

Do you scout the location beforehand to plan the shoot?
Yes, I can scout the location beforehand to ensure I'm familiar with the best spots for lighting and backgrounds and to identify any potential challenges. However, this comes with an additional cost. Please note that the location may be taken by others shortly after the scouting, so I advise opting for this service only if necessary.
What time of day do you prefer to shoot outdoors, and why?
The best time for outdoor shoots is during the golden hours—shortly after sunrise and before sunset. The soft, warm lighting during these times enhances skin tones and creates a beautiful, natural atmosphere.
How do you choose the best lighting conditions for outdoor shoots?
Lighting is a critical component of outdoor photography. I choose the timing and positioning to maximise natural light. If you have opted for flash photography, I will bring professional lighting equipment to fill in shadows or add a creative touch when needed.
Can we choose our own location and do you charge travel fees for locations outside your area?
Yes, you can choose your own location and I will provide advice on it. Travel fees may apply for locations that are difficult to get to but this can be discussed during the consultation.
How do you ensure privacy and avoid crowds at public outdoor locations?
Choosing the right time of day, depending on the location, helps to avoid crowds. However, do note that Singapore is small and there's no guarantee that any place will be deserted. I would advise against popular locations to maintain privacy.
What happens if the chosen location is unavailable or unsuitable on the day of the shoot?
We should have a backup plan in place. If the primary location becomes unavailable or unsuitable, we will work on an alternative location nearby. I always aim for a clean and simple background, so we don't necessarily need an eye-catching backdrop that could distract from focusing on you, the primary subject.
Style and Creativity
Can you help us with wardrobe selection or provide styling advice?
Absolutely! I provide guidance on wardrobe choices that complement the location and the overall theme of the shoot. This helps ensure that everyone looks their best and that the photos have a cohesive aesthetic.
What is your approach to posing for natural-looking photos?
My approach is relaxed and conversational. I give light direction to ensure flattering angles while encouraging natural interactions and movements that result in genuine, candid moments.
Do you provide props, or should we bring our own?
I encourage clients to bring personal items that are meaningful to them. This adds a personal touch to the photos and makes the shoot more unique. If I feel that any props available at my home could enhance the shoot, I'm happy to bring them along as long as they're not too bulky or heavy - please note that my photography equipment are already heavy and bulky.
How do you incorporate the environment and background into your compositions?
I carefully choose angles and perspectives that highlight the beauty of the surroundings while ensuring that the subjects remain the focus of the photo. The environment becomes a complementary element that enhances the overall composition. Should you opt for flash photography, I can further improve the quality of the photos.
Can we include pets or other personal elements in the shoot?
Yes, including pets or personal elements is a wonderful way to make your photos more meaningful. I'll work with you to make sure they're integrated naturally into the shoot.
Do you work with specific themes, and can you accommodate custom themes?
I love working with themes! Whether you have a specific concept in mind or need help developing one, I can accommodate and creatively execute custom themes to bring your vision to life.
How do you make sure that the outdoor setting complements our personal style and preferences?
I take the time to understand your personal style and preferences during the pre-shoot consultation. Based on this, I suggest locations and compositions that align with your vision, ensuring that the setting enhances your individual style.
Can you show us examples of previous outdoor shoots you've done in similar locations?
Yes, please feel free to browse through the different categories on my website. This will give you a sense of my style and how I work with different environments.
Technical and Logistical Details
What kind of equipment do you use for outdoor photography?
I use high-end professional cameras, lenses and lighting equipment. This includes portable lighting to manage varying light conditions and ensure the best possible image quality.
Do you use artificial lighting or rely solely on natural light for outdoor shoots?
I can do both, depending on your requirements. While using natural light makes everything easier and more cost-effective, I'm a fan of artificial lighting because it creates magic, especially in low-light conditions or for creative effects.
How do you handle challenges such as harsh sunlight or low light conditions?
I use professional lighting equipment to maintain image quality and achieve the desired aesthetic. However, there are limitations in certain situations that may affect the quality of the final product.
What is your post-production process, and do you offer retouching or editing services?
My post-production process involves carefully selecting the best images and enhancing them with professional editing software. I offer retouching services at very reasonable prices to ensure that the final images are polished and meet your expectations.
How long after the shoot will we receive our final images?
The typical turnaround time for delivering the final edited images is between 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the complexity of the shoot, the number of images to be processed, and the type of editing required. The actual period depends a lot on my schedule and workload as well. Please discuss this with me to find out more before the shoot.
