Men's Fashion Photoshoot with Lee Won Jae
When Won Jae first approached me, I have to admit I was initially expecting him to be like many others who were simply shopping around for photographers. But I couldn't have been more wrong. Due to my heavy workload, I missed out on his last message but he took the extra effort to reach out to me once again. It was a small gesture but it spoke volumes about his sincerity and determination.
Won Jae expressed his desire for a studio physique shoot, although he was open to outdoor settings as well. His earnestness and clear vision for the shoot impressed me and I decided to go all out to help him realize his dream.
I had access to a temporary shared studio space above a gym, which was perfect for the fitness shoot that Won Jae had in mind, with props readily available. However, the studio space came with a lot of uncertainties and that's why I had been rejecting clients' requests for a studio shoot. I'd rather lose business than give empty promises or risk possible setbacks.
I made sure to convey the potential drawbacks of the studio situation to Won Jae, being completely transparent with him about the situation. After all, managing expectations is crucial in such scenarios. To mitigate any issues, I checked and confirmed with the landlord to ensure the usability of the studio space.
On the day of the shoot, I arrived at the studio early to set up. However, halfway through, the landlord's working partners informed me that they needed the space for a meeting. Even though they allowed me to continue with my set-up, they were occupying a significant portion of the space, making it challenging for me to prepare properly.
Amid this situation, I walked to the nearby mall to grab a quick lunch and then fetched Won Jae from the MRT station. I was instantly struck by his ultra-friendly and personable character. We engaged in deep conversations during the car ride, which helped build a rapport. This was particularly important because, until then, our interaction had been limited to text messages. I also felt bad for Won Jae, as he was dealing with a sore throat, but I knew that establishing good chemistry was key to improving the quality of the photos. So, we continued chatting.
The studio shoot was somewhat delayed due to the earlier meeting but this worked to our advantage as Won Jae needed extra time to do a warm-up and get his body in the best shape before the shoot. While he was at the gym, I continued setting up the studio.
As Won Jae had brought along a variety of extra clothes, I shared my plan to utilise them in the shoot. I wanted to capture his youthful energy and appearance. Given his Korean celebrity look, I proposed the idea of creating an "Oppa" (big brother) image for the first set of the shoot.
Won Jae embraced this concept wholeheartedly, offering his best smiles and charisma during the set. He portrayed the "Oppa" image naturally and effortlessly, making it seem like he had been doing photoshoots for years. To create a clean and fresh mood, I used a four-light set-up to illuminate him properly. I thoroughly enjoyed the shoot, witnessing his ability to convey the "Oppa" image with such ease, despite it being his first-ever photoshoot.
