Quick Guide to Photography Lighting

Introduction

As a potential client, you're about to take a quick dive into the art of lighting, explained in simple terms to help you make informed choices for your photography needs. We won't delve into overly technical lighting theories because, hey, we want you to feel at ease.

Quality vs Quantity of Light

When it comes to your photography, it's not just about how much light you have—it's about using the right quality of light.

Quality of light is often referred to as harshness. On a cloudy day, things appear comfortable to your eyes. In terms of the quantity of light, it's bright on a sunny day and dim on a rainy day when dark clouds cover the sky. Many mistake the quantity of light as its quality. For instance, I've seen people posting photos with harsh sunlight on their faces, claiming, "great lighting". That's a misconception. Having a lot of light doesn't mean it's good quality light.

Quality of Light: Soft vs Hard Lighting

In the world of photography, you're not just taking pictures; you're crafting art. Soft lighting is like a gentle brushstroke, enhancing your subjects with elegance. Hard lighting, on the other hand, brings out texture and depth, making it ideal for bold, artistic shots.

I, for one, favour soft light in my work. It elevates my subjects' complexion and makes them look approachable.

Golden Hours vs Noon Time Photography

You deserve photos that capture the magic of your moments. The golden hours, around sunrise and sunset, bathe everything in a dreamy, golden glow. In contrast, noon can be harsh, creating strong shadows. I'm here to ensure your photos mirror the beauty and emotion of the moment.

Flash vs Natural Light vs Ambient Light

Natural light is like the warm embrace of a sunlit day, perfect for candid, heartfelt shots. Flash adds a touch of drama when you want to make a statement. Ambient light, such as continuous lamp light, is more akin to flash but often can't be controlled, like natural light.

We can't easily control natural light, but we can command flash. Think of your subject and the background as two distinct layers. We can use directional flash to illuminate you and maintain balanced exposure throughout the frame. With flash, we can craft both soft and hard light.

Direction of Light

The direction of light has a profound impact on a subject's mood and appearance. For instance, even lighting on both sides of your face exudes trustworthiness, while lighting just one side creates a mysterious aura. Dim lighting may evoke emotion.

Shooting outdoors near noon, when the sun is high, casts unflattering shadows, especially beneath the eyes. Direct light from the camera's angle makes the subject appear flat. When light comes from a lower angle, it's unflattering, akin to a horror movie.

Off-Camera Light vs Speedlite on Top

Your photography deserves to stand out, and that's where off-camera lighting shines. It's akin to having a personal lighting artist who sculpts every detail. But yes, it comes at a cost.

A speedlite mounted on top of the camera is useful but has limitations, particularly in light control and quantity, especially if you employ bounce light. In contrast, off-camera flash is flexible, allowing you to create directional or spread light, and both soft and hard lighting. However, it requires more and larger equipment.

Why Off-Camera Flash Photography Can Be Pricey

Quality calls for an investment. When it comes to off-camera flash, it's akin to opting for a bespoke suit. The equipment, expertise and time involved make it a premium choice.

An off-camera flash setup necessitates an additional wireless trigger, a wireless receiver, an adapter bracket, a flash unit, a light stand and a light modifier. Beyond the extra cost, maintenance and replacement fees, the bulkiness, weight and setup time can pose a challenge.

Conclusion

Your vision is paramount and understanding lighting is the key to bringing it to life. I'm here to guide you every step of the way. Whether you're capturing a special event, creating lasting memories or seeking the perfect portrait, remember that the right lighting can transform your results.
